Sorry if this is posted elsewhere, but MM confirmed Datone will be making the full-time move to Elephant End.

Here's a good blog post from just a few days ago on why Datone might be in the mix at OLB, and why that might be a good thing. TLDR: He matched Neal's production in half the snaps at the position.

Good move, I think. He is clearly not a 5 technique. Not sure he is an elephant end either, but we shall see.

Peppers, Neal, Perry and now Jones........how many elephant ends can be on the field at once??  The elephant end didn't even exist until 2014 and now we have 4 of them.  Why can't we just draft and develop normal 3-4 OLBs and DEs??

Too many elephants.....sounds like an early on Republican debate...haha

With the reported Jared Cook signing the Packers have roughly $10 million in cap space moving forward. Absent some contract restructuring I don't think we'll see much more action with FAs, maybe Kuhn on a minimum deal. Too many guys to re-sign in the pipeline.

Or will we?!

Possibly TWO signings? @RadioJoeSports@Bill_Michaels MT @TomPelissero Packers likely done, but poking around on RBs; Ronnie Hillman

Hillman? Doubt it.  I still would like Dansby on the cheap until we draft a starting caliber inside LB.

Packers have discussed Ronnie Hillman

The Packers like to build through the draft, not free agency. But they signed one free agent today in Jared Cook, and they could sign another.

Green Bay has been poking around free agent running back Ronnie Hillman, Tom Pelisssero of USA Today reports.

Running back doesn’t seem to be a big need for the Packers, who re-signed James Starks this offseason and are hoping to see a slimmer, fitter Eddie Lacy when camp opens. But if they can get him at the right price, Hillman could be a decent addition for the Packers as well.

Hillman has played his entire four-year career with the Broncos. Last season he had a career-high 863 rushing yards and seven touchdowns, but the Broncos have made clear that C.J. Anderson is their starter going forward, and they haven’t shown a lot of interest in bringing Hillman back.

If they did look at Dansby, it won't be until after the draft as they probably want to see what their draft day haul is. I seriously doubt TT is opposed to a guy like Dansby, but it all depends on KD's price tag. If KD wants to be paid like a top ILB, he's barking up the wrong tree. If he wants to sign a very team friendly deal then I'm sure TT is interested...as is true with many free agents.

2 guys still available at free agency that I'd consider considering (if I was TT):

Nick Fairley

Brandon Boykin

Thoughts?

Well my two guys are gone; Fairley went to the Saints for $3m and Boykin went to the Panthers for $840k (both one year deals).  Both would have looked nice in green and gold at that price.  I've checked the remaining free agent list and there is no one left I'd bring in.  Bring on the draft!

Green Bay — The National Football League announced dates on Friday of the off-season workout programs for all 32 teams. The Green Bay Packers officially begin their preparations for 2016 on April 18.

As stipulated by the collective bargaining agreement, each team conducts a voluntary nine-week program broken up into three phases:

"Phase One consists of the first two weeks of the program with activities limited to strength and conditioning and physical rehabilitation only.

"Phase Two consists of the next three weeks of the program. On-field workouts may include individual player instruction and drills as well as team practice conducted on a 'separates' basis. No live contact or team offense vs. team defense drills are permitted.

"Phase Three consists of the next four weeks of the program. Teams may conduct a total of 10 days of organized team practice activity, or 'OTAs.' No live contact is permitted, but 7-on-7, 9-on-7, and 11-on-11 drills are permitted."

Each team can also hold one mandatory minicamp for veteran players that must take place during Phase Three.

Here are the dates of the Packers' program:

First day — April 18
OTA off-season workouts — May 24-26, May 31, June 1-2, June 6-9
Mandatory minicamp — June 14-16

Additionally, teams hold a rookie football development program lasting seven weeks. It can begin as early as May 9.

"During this period, no activities may be held on weekends, with the exception of one post-NFL Draft rookie minicamp, which may be conducted on either the first or second weekend following the draft," according to the CBA.

Information about the dates of post-draft rookie minicamps and which OTA sessions are open to the public will be available at a later time.

@RapSheet: #Packers S Sean Richardson, who underwent cervical spinal fusion, was cleared today by Dr Robert Watkins for on-field non-contact activities.

@RapSheet: Sean Richardson is determined to play again. Dr. Watkins said his neck is healing perfectly & should be 100% in 2 months. Teams are watching.

Would be astonished if he plays for the Packers again.

League has just released preseason opponents. Exact scheduling TBD

@PeteDougherty: Packers preseason sked:
Aug. 7 vs. Colts, HOF game
Aug. 11-15: vs Browns
Aug. 18-22: vs Raiders
Aug. 25-28: at 49ers
Sept. 1-2: at Chiefs

@WesHod: The HOF game will be the #Packers' only national telecast based on the release. All others on the Packers TV Network.

@TomSilverstein: #Packers could go a month or more without playing at Lambeau Field depending on the early part of the regular season.

The good news is he's not a major player.

That's also the bad news for him. "Special Teams Lunatic" might be the roster spot Janis uses while Gunter takes the other DB spot.

I didn't realize he was Mike Goodson's brother, who has also been suspended in the past. Family is bad at drug tests!

Oh well, he was #5 on the depth chart and we will probably draft another CB. He was likely toast anyway.

Does Palmer's release foretell a new ILB showing up in the draft?

Remember A.J. Hawk, Brad Jones, & Jamari Lattimore's releases after they each received extensive playing time during the 2014 season?

This year it's Nate Palmer who has been shown the door after opening the season as the starter at ILBer.

Would anyone be shocked if Barrington and/or Joe Thomas (given their marginal ability) was released after (or even before) the 2016 season?

There is not now, nor has there been for several years now been, much talent at the ILB position (assuming MM is still moving Clay back to OLB).

I have never bought into the notion that TT or Dom (or even MM) just don't value ILB very much. However, if nothing more is done than drafting a JAG like Jake Ryan or hoping the light goes on for Carl Bradford, I may have to reconsider the arguments raised by those who insist ILB is just not that important in the Packers' defensive scheme.

Desmond Bishop in 2010.....

That's all I have to say

I agree Bishop was good in 2010, but that was tightly linked to fact that was peak BJ Raji, a still effective Ryan Pickett, and a very underrated Cullen Jenkins on the DL. Howard Green was very effective that year as well. That was a very good line.

Not an accident that the LBs all looked good in the mid 1990s on the Super Bowl teams with Reggie White, Sean Jones, Santana Dotson, and Gilbert Brown playing in front of them. That was arguably the best DL in Packer history (and one of the best in NFL history).

Right now, their DL is a very good Mike Daniels and then... Guion, Pennel, and Josh Boyd (if Datone  Jones plays mostly at elephant). I think TT has to go heavy on DL in the draft. If they don't significantly upgrade there, it won't matter as much who plays ILB.

If only we had played Carl Bradford, Jumal Rolle, Jeff Janis, and John Crockett we probably would have been ruining Genius Elway's latest SB appearance!

Genius Elway won because his team had a ferocious pass rush to go along with a good secondary. The same reason the Giants won two Super Bowls in the last decade.

The Packers have what looks to be a very good secondary. They just need an inside pass rush to go along with a good collection of edge rushers.

Given that 5 of them (Inside or Outside) are unrestricted free agents in 2017, and 3 of them we won't care about (the way things presently look), I would expect as many as 3 LB draft picks in the draft.  It would not surprise me if one of them were a pure ILB with cover abilities, and another one of them were a guy who could play both inside or outside.  Then a few undrafted free agents to top it off.
