has a succession plan in mind

A succession plan typically implies someone already in the organization (Wolf?) or someone who they can get on a moments notice (Schneider?). Rumor is Schneider has a clause to get out of SEA if the GBP job opened.

Who would you like to see follow Thompson?

I'm a big Crosby fan, but don't know that he's 4-5x better than the league average K as the contract suggests. Given recent reports that Forte will end up at $3-4M per year, just for grins, do you think the 2016 Packers are better with Forte and a Nick Novak type or Crosby and Starks?

Crosby is a top 5 kicker. I think that amount sounds high for a Kicker, but with the cap going up its probably going to be pretty standard. It's hard to justify 4 million per year for a Kicker until you think about 2012 Crosby and remember how brutally frustrating it was to have an inconsistent kicking game. The ripple effect of his poor kicking was insane. He's elite, pay the man.

If he made that last second FG against Detroit, then, I say pay the man.   But it does seem high.  Not that I don't think he's a very good kicker.  But maybe go less and the offense goes for it on FOURTH down more this next season.

I'm confident that Russ and Ted will have structured this well, and it shouldn't be crippling by any means. Just challenging the notion that Crosby might not be one of the best in the league. I've always just kind of assumed that myself, especially when you see a few teams struggle with the spot.

But actually looking into it, here are his FG% rankings among qualified kickers the past six seasons: 16th, 23rd, 13th, 32nd, 11th, 26th. That stat obviously doesn't tell the whole story, but it's probably the most important.

Just fodder for internet time wasting...

The Ravens used a franchise tag for Justin Tucker. Estimated price is $4.5M.
Given this, Crosby's deal is close to market value, and may even be a bargain.
I think teams will be willing to pay a relatively high signing bonus for a relatively low cap hit. Didn't look at Crosby's particulars, but his cap hit averages a little over $4M/year, and that's roughly 2 1/2% of the total cap (as of this year). I think it's likely this (2.5%-3%) is where the better kickers in the league will 'slot' in a team's cap.

I don't know the stat off the top of my head but in recent years there is a pretty strong percentage of games decided by 3 points or less.  With teams playing so many close games having a strong kicking game is something you just cant afford to overlook.  And as Boris said he is kicking in a place where it isn't exactly the most ideal of conditions half of the season.

Of the 10 you have in mind, how many kick 8+ games indoors?

Off the top of my head: Gostkowski, Tucker, Bailey, Josh Brown, Folk, Barth, Gould, Hauschka, Gano, Carpenter, Suisham, Dawson.

Not all of these guys are better than Crosby, but they're all comparable. And most of them are making a lot less than $4 million a year.

@WesHod just tweeted the Crosby cap hits:

$2.4
$3.6
$5.25
$4.85

At those numbers, I have absolutely no issues with the deal. As others have stated, $5M could be going rate for a solid kicker come 2018.

@TomSilverstein: #Packers have $19.63M in cap room after Crosby deal. Won't RFA tender Mulumba and probably won't L. Taylor either. Plenty of $$ to work with.

IIRC that leaves Chris Banjo as the only player left from last season eligible for a RFA tender. He should be brought back.

Crosby and Starks.  It's  a lot easier to find running production than a guy that won't choke when the game is on the line.
