@PeteThamel:  Sources: Boston College coach Jeff Hafley is expected to become the new defensive coordinator of the Green Bay Packers. Hafley has brought BC to bowl eligibility in three of his four years.

Thamel is a senior college FB writer for ESPN so there may be something to this.

EDIT:

@AndyHermanNFL: Worked under Robert Salah in 2017 & 2018 in San Fran.

ESPN  Pete Thamel:    The future of the Packers proved a significant allure to Hafley, as they have a strong young core and bright future. He's a longtime friend of Packers coach Matt LaFleur and long-timer admirer of the Packers franchise.

Talk about under the radar.

BC not a high ranking defense in terms of scoring in 2023.  Three teams went over 40 on them, one of them over 50.  Those were big school teams but not ranked.  Highlight was holding #22 SMU to 14 in their win in a bowl game.

Waiting for media to fill in the backstory cuz this looks painfully meh right now.

That LaFleur hired a buddy, reeks of a cronie MM type hire. Which is not good.

I hope this guy proves me wrong. Because it just loos like there were much better candidates out there.

Takes two to tango.

BC not going anywhere in the current pay to play NIL.

Good for him to GTFO.  No more tummy rubbing 18-20 year olds and recruiting non stop including you’re own roster.   College football is a mess right now unle$$ you are one of the be$t de$tination$

Guessing he was an unexpected available dude and it had to happen quietly and fast.

So according to local ESPN radio in MKE, Hafely mounted a 22-26 record at BC and grew quite cynical over the NIL and the state of college football today.

He also got tired of the recruiting game involved in today's college game and wanted out. However, it was also possible that Hafely would have been fired unless he really turned things around at BC.

So his coming to back to NFL and GB gives him job security and one of his bff's makes the hire.

Yikes. Again, I want to like his hire but this does not sound like a guy who was going to be heavily recruited for an NFL DC job anytime soon.

Why do I feel like somewhere Joe Barry is laughing his ass off...

Will the Packers change to a 4-3?

Well I guess we shall see if he can handle the big boys- if not it may well be mlf’s ass next time…totally on script to pick a dude not only not in left field but in a different township…typical packers smartest guy stuff

Per Matt Schneidman, Hafely believes in a lot of press man coverage. Not a zone, soft AKA bend don't break guy.

That would be a big change from Barry. And something that Jaire would be loving.

Not sure what to make of this hire yet. But look at the facts. Most of MLF’s preferred candidates are unavailable. Two guys from Baltimore likely spoken for, Durde on hold in Dallas with Quinn still in play for Was HC job. Evero likely staying at Carolina, Staley is Barry 2.0. 👎 That leaves Christian Parker, who has no DC or playcalling experience.

Jeff Hafley presumably does have playcalling experience as a college DC/HC + NFL experience. His familiarity with MLF was clearly a factor.

“Coach over scheme” is what Peter Bukowski has been preaching. Let’s see if this guy can bring the heat. 🔥

I wanted a younger hire, someone hungry with something to prove. I'm fine with giving this guy a chance if it means guys will be put in better position to do what they do best. It became pretty clear in these playoffs that teams who fail to pressure a qb pay dearly for it when it matters most. KC rendered mvp Lamar Jackson impotent by chasing his ass down. Give the young athletes on our defense the chance to hunt.
