More info here, from Peliserro.

@TomPeliserro: Jared Cook taking physical today, set to sign w/ #Packers (as @RapSheet said). Deal was done Thursday. Already been talking to Aaron Rodgers

Gotta love Ted. Deal was done last week, not a peep out there until the Packers decide they're ready.

Glad to see this happened. Lessens the chance of a reach pick in the draft and allows Ted to focus on the front 7 on D and OL. Will be interesting to see this offense with a TE who can really stretch the field (Cook is faster than Finley was).

They will still likely draft try to draft a "project" TE.  Backman is only 6'3", which for a TE typically means an H-back type.  Cook is a full 3 inches taller and used to run the same speed as Backman.  I would expect they are still interested in Tyler Higbee or Jerrell Adams or similar.  I like the move.  It reduces risk.

I tend to agree with CUQUI and believe draft flexibility was a significant factor in this signing.  The Packers needed to add a tight end to this roster, and there is a pretty good chance that all the rookie tight ends that have a solid chance to contribute in 2016 are going to be off the board within the first three rounds.  Sign Cook, who doesn't figure into the comp pick formula and give the position the deep threat capability that the Packers lack, or plan on using one of the team's first three picks on a position that is probably the weakest group in this class.

Ted doesn't need to draft a tight end at all now with Rodgers, Cook, Perillo and Backman on the roster.  If it gets down into rounds six and seven he can still add one to compete with Perillo and Backman.  Mitchell Henry is still in that mix and there were some positive comments about him last year.  I tend to think that Ted will now pass on the position altogether in the draft.

MM tipped his hand after he talked with Cook last week.  He said he was really impressed with him and it was "in the business phase now", which I took to mean they were working on a deal.  Exciting.  Hope he straightens out and becomes available and accountable on a regular basis.

A couple of details on the Packers signing TE Jared Cook: They showed immediate interest. The offer had been on the table since his visit, according to a source. He had drawn interest from the Carolina, Atlanta and Chicago but finally decided on the Packers. The deal will be finalized when he passes his physical on Monday.

So playing with Rodgers is better than playing with $Cam (the future of NFL QB), Matty Ice (formerly the future of NFL QB), or Smokin' Jay (why he would even consider this makes me wonder about his decision making)?

Well, since he had been released, he's not the kind of FA many fans want(ed). Of course, he's exactly the type of FA Thompson considers.

Um, he's exactly the type of Free Agent many of us wanted: Upgrade at a position, for a reasonable deal, doesn't even count against compensatory picks.

Its a good decision for him long term. He would be the backup in Carolina, which isn't a heavy passing team to begin with. While Tampa and Chicago have franchise QBs in place, both teams are installing new OCs and there's no guarantee that system would feature a TE or the QBs will be successful. GB is a pass heavy O with a consistent system, a very successful passing QB, a history of utilizing athletic TEs, he will have plenty of opportunities with Nelson and Cobb and co., and he will step in as the starter on day 1. If the money was close and he hopes to cash in next year then it's a no brainer decision.

Interesting that it was Cook who ultimately decided on one year. Betting that one season with #12 will get him one of those silly Dwayne Allen deals next year.

If he lives up to his potential, likely no way to afford him with the mass exodus in 2017. Feels like a one-shot deal, but one that could pay off quite nicely.

Curious about the drops.

TE stats link for FootballOutsiders

A few observations from these sites...

- Rodgers catches almost everything thrown to him

- Cook has speed, but does seem to have some hand issues. Also scores very low in the FootballOutsiders Adjusted values (DYAR and DVOA)

Classic Thompson signing. Almost no cost and very low risk, high reward potential. Let's see how good Brian Angelichio really is.

Tight ends under Angelichio have had strong seasons. Tim Wright caught 54 passes for 571 yards and five touchdowns with the Buccaneers in 2013 and Gary Barnidgehad a stellar 2015 season with 79 catches for 1,043 yards and nine touchdowns in Cleveland.

Careful, that post is close to "nut sucking tripe."  You wouldn't want anyone to call you a "knob gobbling simpleton".

Along with Jordy's return this should also preclude defenses from walking a safety down and stacking the box as much as they did last year. Slim Eddie's ready to eat.

Nope, it doesn't count. Still really disappoinTED in our GM.

I was looking at Cook's career to date. He had 1 year of a decent 36 year old Hasselbeck (set Cook's career yardage mark) and 1/2 a year of a good Bradford as his QBs. The other 5.5 years were basically half year intervals of Vince Young, Kerry Collins, Case Keenum, Jake Locker, Austin Davis, Nick Foles & Shaun Hill.  None of those started more than 11 games in a season. That might be enough to derail even the best receivers.

Presumably, consistent throws from the league's best down field passer will do something to help his performance.

I think the Packers still draft a late round TE because they're the special team draft horses. Cook's not playing STs.

Nice, prove-it contract for a guy who can open up the field. It has to be nice for TT and MM to be able to point to Rodgers and say, "Wanna catch passes from him or those other guys?"

One-year make-good contract could work out nicely for Cook as well.
