I'm torn on this hire.  I like McCarthy.  Like what he accomplished early on in Green Bay.  The guy was flawed (who isn't) but also had some poor luck / unfortunate circumstances (i.e. - the Seattle onside kick, the Seattle fake punt, etc.). I was pretty certain he'd get another HC gig.  And I was hoping he'd be successful, just not against the Packers.

Well, there's a couple of teams I'd rather he not coach, namely the Bears, Vikings, Saints, Pats and Cowboys.  I don't like any of those teams, and would rather they not be successful.  So sorry Mike, but I hope you don't last in the Big D very long.

I don’t put much into that quote. He’s already talking the company line.

The Cowboys have a rich history, at least before the last quarter century. But the most iconic American sports franchise is the New York Yankees, hands down. In the NFL, it’s the Packers. Multiple eras of dominance. The Curly days, the Lombardi era, and while we don’t have the Lombardi trophies the Pats do the last quarter-century (though two is nothing to sneeze at), no other team outside of Foxborough has won more in the last decade. Since the early 90s, Green Bay has been consistently great, or at least very good, with few down periods. They’re clearly a team on the rise again. Wait until Gutenkunst has one more draft and free agency period. Add some veteran receiver help, draft a stud wideout, add a mauler at MLB, and look out.

I’d put the Yankees, Packers, Celtics and Canadiens ahead of Dallas, and probably a few more franchises if I looked at their entire histories. Dallas is worth a lot of $ because Jerruh would slap a Cowboys bumper sticker on his wife’s ass if it made him money. But he’s completely incompetent as a GM. If he doesn’t sign Jimmy Johnson, the Cowboys are an even bigger dumpster fire since he bought the franchise. That one signing is saving his legacy as an owner, and even that period in the early 90s isn’t going to save him forever. Cowpuke fans have to blow off their VHS tapes to see a dominant Cowboys team play.

As for Coach McCarthy, living outside of Dallas, the talk from the fans down here is humorous, to say the least. Dak is the second coming, and every position on the team is better than any other team in the NFL. It was all Jason Garrett’s fault. And before that, it was Wade Phillips’ fault. Bill Parcells’ fault. Chan Gailey. Dave Campo. Rinse and repeat.

The media is cautiously optimistic, neither fully embracing or condemning the hire. I don’t know if I can really wish Mike luck. I’ve always liked him as a person. I’m sick that he has to work with Jerry Jones trying to stick his meddling hand up Mike’s ass. I think the Cowboys job is a level of stress that McCarthy’s not prepared for. Packers fans expect to win, but we’ll trust the process, and allow the team a chance to make the moves needed over a few seasons. Cowboys fans rank only behind the Patriots on the list of insufferable NFL fan bases. Twenty years ago, the Patriots weren’t shit. Now every asshat in Boston is a “lifelong Pats fan.” Yeah, right. Fuck you. When Brady retires and Belichick retires or moves on, you can go back to being the nothings you were for 40 years. Speed bumps for NFC North teams on the way to hoisting the Lombardi Trophy.

And I’m greatly concerned for Mike’s health. He doesn’t look good at all. Moving to the land of barbecue isn’t going to be the best thing for him. They roll out of bed to a plate of brisket down here. That’s no joke.

Yeah, LS, all these "lifelong fans" are what turns me off so much to the Atlanta fans. It's an league-wide affliction, apparently.
The media is not immune, either. They will start ball washing players and/or teams at the first sign of success, and all of a sudden, everybody is a fan.
Look at how hard they were blowing Mahomes last year, and Dak/Zeke before that.

FWIW, I think MM will do fine with local media there.... as long as they win. When they don't and pressure on him increases, is when his PCs will have much more tension. If he has to start defending his staff....

The media down here all have their lips firmly affixed to Jones' buttocks. They look at him for permission before speaking. The level of sychophancy down here is jarring. I've seen Craig Counsell's comments and Q&A following a Brewers loss, and the questions are softballs. Well, compared to the doozies served up for Jerry Jones, and to a lesser extent Jason Garrett, the sports reporters present at Counsell's presser look like Woodward and Bernstein, by way of comparison. There's little to no objectivity.

After the Boys had lost three straight games, the headline of the sports section was, "the Cowboys. Still elite?" or something like that. Everybody else knew they'd been exposed. Their 3-0 start was purely the product of playing the dregs of the NFL. They ended at 8-8, meaning they went 5-8 the last 13 weeks. Yet with a week to go, and the NFC Least still up for grabs, there were actually sports radio commentators down here saying, "well, the Cowboys have one of the most talented rosters, top to bottom, in the NFL, and if they make the playoffs, their record won't care. They can still end the drought."

The one person that should most benefit from McCarthy's signing is Dak Prescott. I don't think he'll ever be that accurate a passer. But we'll see. I'm sitting on a picket fence where McCarthy is concerned, though. I want the guy to do well, but I sure as hell don't want the Cowboys to do well, simply because of Jones. I can cheer for some of the players, and do. But Jones, and the God awful fan base, just turn my stomach.

Yes, apparently in an OL role.

Could Winston Moss be next?

That's actually a solid hire if he's the OL coach. Philbert was really good there and probably his ceiling as a coach.

for me, with the knowledge that his brother died of a heart attack and having a paid year off and he comes back rounder than ever tells me all I need to know about MM.  I might just call it a lack of discipline and stuck in his ways...

Probably just needs to lay off the sweet tea.

He lied about how much film he's watched. He hasn't kept up with the newest technology. He is ignoring the underlings. Sound like every company's new hire...

Seriously, you woulda thought MM had revamped himself to become a coach in tune with the modern game given the press on him. Instead, it sounds like he has a really good agent who is skilled in PR and spinning stories. How disappointing.

The potential for crash & burn was already high and it keeps going higher.

I guess MM continues to have the bad habit of sticking with the same old guys and being loyal to a fault. And here I was hoping he'd learned better and would try something new... Meh.

Why he should have been fired after that game in Seattle.
