From a walk-on at a football factory to a first round pick. No matter what the guy is a damn hard worker.
I can't say today whether he is going to be special or not, but I don't mind the move. They needed to address the defense, and they added two pretty decent prospects today.
What I find funny is that some of the people that ripped the guy for trading back and getting too many late round picks are all of a sudden beside themselves because maybe we gave away one too many 3rd round picks.
I hope like heck Matthews works out just so those haters can chew on the big fattie. I am so sick and tired of the constant b!tching and moaning that goes on around here with TT and the Packers. Have a drink and chill already.

TT live on packers.com now
I like it. Matthews is a baller and proved himself at every level so far. A shock because of what was given up but it makes a lot of sense. Still a little shocked though. Wow.
It's not like they gave up the next 3 1st rounders for the guy

Actually, if Matthews works out wouldn't that just few the fire of the haters who have been saying TT should have been doing this all along? Hmmmmmmm. Seems like your in a conundrum.
Yea, that's why TT made the deal. Nonsense.quote:Originally posted by Koopla Krash:

Smart to leave all that drama from last year off the press' minds.

Suck it haters. TT is taking a risk and I think it's going to turn up gold. Matthews has a chance to be special.
Huh. I guess if someone doesn't like the move, they are suddenly TT haters.
I hope Matthews makes 10 Pro Bowls and makes the HOF. I just think TT gave up too much.
What does the value indicator say about the value of the trade with the 5th Rd. we get?
I thought the trade was ridiculous. To much to give up to move up 15 spots into the late round one area. Now they are done until the fourth round, and most say the talent level really starts falling in round five.
I have no problem with Clay Matthews however. He does bring a bit of concerns as he is a 100% undisputed one-year wonder...and Thompson has drafted quite a few of those in the last two years. Nonetheless I had him at the #25 player in the draft and he figured to go right around this area.
I like the player, but I don't like what Thompson gave up to get him. I think giving up #41, #73 and maybe the fifth rounder would have been more appropriate.

Defense definitely got better today....on paper.
Offense line needs to be addressed somehow.
Maybe FA after the draft....OK, now I'm dreaming.
Can't do it all with one draft.

I seriously think some people have an obsession with TT. It doesn't matter what he does. Really. He's up the creek without a paddle either way.
He's not perfect by any stretch but in the 37 years I have been on this Earth I have yet to see this amount of second guessing and armchair GMing with any other person affiliated with the Packers.

Maybe not this deal, but the writing was on the wall with that pick; I predicted it months ago.
Oh I understand what you are saying T, I've been a blatant TT second quesser on many occasions. I like the draft today very much. I haven't liked them in the past (A Rod, Harrell, trading out of the 1st last year)....but I don't think its been a TT thing as much as a different philosophy.....and some sort of delusions of grandeire that make me think I know enough to complain about what a NFL GM does.
I hear ya Joe, but that probably wouldn't have got the deal done. TT must feel strongly about the guy, and perhaps he has him a lot higher on his board than #26. I have no problem with the trade.
I guess the way I see it is that we don't need another 3rd rounder- a guy that "might" make the team. As of today I would think Matthews is an immediate starter at one of the LB spots.
I really like how today has turned out

There's no way to spin this to make it a good trade. The trade value chart is lopsided in favor of the Patriots. Love the player, definitely like him, don't like the trade at all. Maybe if we swapped thirds and went from 83 to 89 but not just give them up. Not a Thompson hater, I very much like him...I haven't been keen on Raji but I've maintained that Thompson has the info and I don't, so I support the pick. This trade is bad though, unless he has something else up his sleeve in terms of aquiring picks.
It's a bold move. One I didn't think Ted would do. But hey, we get 2 1st round picks and 2 players who can come here and make an instant impact to an area the Packers vastly needed help in...the 3-4.
TT admitted it is alot to give up, but said when you really want a guy, you go after him and get him. That's what did.

Packer fans here are happy about the 2 1st rounders.
I love the players and I don't think TT had to give up too much.
While it is more than the Pick Value Chart tells us, It's quite obvious TT thought very highly of Matthews.
Our defense just got a TON better.

Well, you thought they'd trade DOWN with that pick, turning it into multiple players and making it hard for anyone to say, "They traded Favre for that pick." (I disagreed with you.)
So how does this support your prediction? It can pretty easily be said (if anyone wants to) that the player Green Bay got from the Favre deal was Matthews. If Thompson actually had that goal in mind (which I still strongly disagree with), getting one player out of the Favre pick doesn't work.
While I thought we'd go O-Line by those 3rd round picks, our defense just found 2 starters and potential Pro Bowlers. That's good enough for me.
I take it from the trade up that TT thinks this team is pretty close.
He has most of his core on the team already. This is not 2005. We don't need 9 new picks.

26 and 162 picks = 726.6
41, 73, and 83 pics = 890
So no, it's not close, but I don't buy these stupid value systems anyway simply because every team has players rated at different spots.

So we can be the youngest team in the league for the 3rd year in a row???
Enought with acquiring more picks. TT felt he got value, and we all now TT is the shrewdest of the shrewd.
Clear something up for me. I thought we traded both third rounders for a 1st and a 5th. Am I wrong on that?

Yes, the Packers also had to give up their 2nd rounder.

Yes! You forgot the 2nd rounder.
I think TT is getting soft.
Belichick admitted on NFL Network he doesn't like this draft at all.
Some of you need to give me a break. TT can't win. 1st he doesn't "gamble" enough and now when he does, you guys are critical of that.
Ignore the PVC. The players that would've been left in round 2 & 3 are nowhere near the quality that is Clay Matthews.
(2) 1st rounders BITCHES! Our defense is to be reckoned with now.

Boris. Usually I kiss your ass because I'm an ass-kisser. This time I'm kissing your ass because you're right!
I am a huge TT supporter and I watched a lot of USC last year and I think Belicheck just owned TT.

I was shocked with the trade up. He must like Matthews alot. I'm happy to come away with 2 1st rd picks. I hope both turn into pro bowlers. The only reason I'm disappointed is because we don't have another pick till the fourth rd. It kinda takes the interest out of the nest 2 rds. I sure hope to see more highlights of Matthews hitting the QB.

Actually, since we used up 3 high picks for Matthews... we basically got only 1/3 of a player for Favre. Or... Since that extra 3rd round pick was the "overpayment" within the trade value chart... you could also say we got nothing for the Favre pick.
I love the move. Enough with the TT bashing. People bitch if he trades back and then bitch when he moves up. Giving up those picks can be tough to swallow but let's not forget the men in GB that study these guys forever. It's obvious TT and the boys saw a lot in Matthews.
Personally, I grew a bit tired of constantly trading back and acquiring more low level picks. Moving up to add a possible pro bowl type player is exactly what this team needs. GB needs to start adding blue chip type players and I think they added two today.
Trade aside, you have to love Matthews. His bloodlines are incredible and he he's a tireless worker. I think he was the best LB at USC and will be a very good 34 OLB. This guy worked himself from a walk-on at the nations best college football program to a stand out starter and then a first round pick. Some people think he's just scratching the surface of his potential, which is pretty remarkable for the Packers. This guy is the perfect example of Packer People.
Raji and Matthews? I don't care what happens from here on out, this draft is a smashing success for my money.

I think this pick could go either way. Hhe doesen't have much starting experience, really never put up much sack numbers, some whispers about roids, played alongside two other high drafted lb's, overachiever. Hard working and all that kinda thing but what did that really get us with Aj Hawk.
Or he becomes a instinctive playmaker like guys Patriots had such as Vrabel and Brusci that become key cogs in a system. Time will tell.
