Or with guys already on the team.

Can't make me.
Matthews may turn out to be a great player and I hope he does. But, I still think it was a lot to give up. Screw the part about what the Jets gave us. I don't think that pick or player for the TOG pick even entered into TT's plan. At least I would hope it would not. It's a draft pick in the third round. And, now we are back to the 4th round. But, are there decent O-linemen in the 4th, 5th or after? Probably. This draft was light on corners and safeties.

Quite a surprise, but I thing TT likes it that way. He better hit on this one or....

Exactly! Thompson is overpaying so he can draft someone that reminds him of his own scrappy underdog persona! It has nothing to do with acquiring a good player for an extra 3rd round pick!

You have cracked the case, fine sir.

Perhaps you can solve the Jimmy Hoffa thing next?
Max - I just didn't think pick #89 would be made by the Packers. That's all.

For the rest that think I'm bashing TT - who is going to play RT? Even if Matthews is all that and a bag of chips, there is currently still a mondo-sized, gaping hole at RT. There were certainly plenty of possible RTs on the board that are probably much better options that the Packers currently have on the roster.

IF the Packers get at least average play at RT this season, this COULD turn into a mega-awesome trade.
Anybody have that pickoff by Matthews in the senior-type bowl ... I remember tehm showing the clip on the NFL Network.

Towards the sideline, it was one of the most athletic plays I've seen from a LB. I had to do double-take because it was awesome, its the only reason i remember because I had not seen Matthews before that.

If that is the sign of things to come, it is comforting.

Update: It was Matthews Pro day.
Mayock had him as the best of the USC LB's ...

Draft isn't over yet & Tauscher isn't retired. I know Tauscher probably won't start in Sept. but we had a gaping hole at OLB too. Now we don't. Now we got a 3 down player and according to Dom Capers he believes Raji can be a 3-down player too
I have no problem with this. Yeah, would have been nice to keep one of those 3rd rounders but whats the point in complaining. Like we know anything. Obviously Thompson and Co. really wanted Matthews to make the move. Raji/Matthews in day 1...sounds like a success so far to me. Matthews, even if he doesn't start, will make an impact on special teams, and Raji gives the team more depth at D-line, especially at NT.

Sounds good to me

I like the Raji pick, but would have preferred Crabtree - but still a good pick. I also like Matthews as a player, but I personally think OT was a position in much more dire need of a boost.

Currently, the cupboard looks pretty bare:
Giacomoni, Sitton, Barbre, Colledge, or 4th round pick or later.

Granted, someone like Levi Brown could get cut, but that is a hope and prayer. MM stated Tauscher was out until at least October. This doesn't even factor the potential moving of a pegged starter (Sitton or Colledge) or the fact that Clifton's play slipped last year.

I don't want to be a negative nelly, but just trying to explain why I felt the amount TT gave up was too much.

Packer fans here are happy about the 2 1st rounders.

I love the players and I don't think TT had to give up too much.

While it is more than the Pick Value Chart tells us, It's quite obvious TT thought very highly of Matthews.

Our defense just got a TON better.

Agreed........

Did we trade our 2008 Pro-Bowl left tackle suddenly?

Obviously referring to the RT position - guess I shouldn't have assumed everyone would pick that up.

If you look later in the post, I also refer to Clifton's play slippling as well.

.

Missing a few players there. Spitz, Wells and Molls.
But I agree O-Line is questionable
Clifton/College I hope can do the job at left tackle.
Guard and Center Ok.
RT yea.

But at least the packers addressed there biggest problem the front seven.

The key to the Packers season is how well the 1 and 2 nd year players develop.

Colledge and Spitz are set. What do you know about the development of Sitton (who was tabbed as a RT replacement for Tauscher when drafted) or Babre (who is extremely talented but needed time to mature)? Obviously nothing if you're going call the cupboard "bare".

I think this pick could go either way. Hhe doesen't have much starting experience, really never put up much sack numbers, some whispers about roids, played alongside two other high drafted lb's, overachiever. Hard working and all that kinda thing but what did that really get us with Aj Hawk.

Or he becomes a instinctive playmaker like guys Patriots had such as Vrabel and Brusci that become key cogs in a system. Time will tell.

Wow...way to go out on a limb there. Thank the lord you didn't anoint Matthews as the next coming of Lawrence Taylor.
Making this bold of a move, trading up and obviously coming out on the short end of the value of picks, and taking a player who was a one year starter and totaled 5.5 sacks during his entire college career (5 years) is way, way, way, way, way too risky of a move for my taste.

No way anybody can say that TT is only interested in "football players" exclusively. This guy was drafted on his measurables alone. I'm not saying that this guy is an automatic bust (guys with these types of resumes often succeed in the NFL), and I had him as a first rounder on my board. But this is definitely a roll of the dice on a "workout warrior" and to try to spin it any other way would just be totally ignoring the facts.
