If you ask him, Datone Jones and Green Bay hit it off. Likes Trgovac a lot. The guy definitely has a personality, plays with some fire.

Jones says he looked up to Reggie White. Wants to be the same player, play with same hunger.

Jones: "I want to be the greatest football player of all time. That's my goal. Everything has to be in line, character, everything

Datone Jones says he almost fainted when #Packers call came in. Says "I have only played the game one way."

Love. This. Pick!
I love this pick. This is just what they needed. If Perry can come back from injury and give them something, the defense looks much better.

It will be interesting to see what the do tomorrow...interior lineman, OLB, and WR stand out as areas of need. Also wonder if they go NT...the mega-deals for CM III and Rodgers + his shoddy play last year may spell the end for Raji in GB.
As with any pick it's tough to assume anything, but overall I like the fact they took a DL with good potential. The fact remains they have never found a suitable replacement after losing Cullen Jenkins and the defense has suffered because they've had to get by with CJ Wilson types or shuffle Raji or Pickett too much.

This guy gives them some versatility in that he can move inside on passing downs and he adds some length and athleticism on the edge. We also have to remember that Neal and Pickett and Raji are not signed long term and Worthy is coming off a major injury. Daniels is too small and they let Walden walk. Who knows what to think of CJ Wilson.

Good move TT

I really question how "out of shape" Raji and Pickett actually are. We don't have any specifics on their weight, or even any pictures, just Bob McGinn's word.

as I said somewhere else here, if it were July I'd be concerned about their condition. but not in April. bad bob spreading his unique brand of the sky is falling. Finley's gone too, right? I mean, bad bob predicted it.

Datone will light a fire under BJ. if not, Raji won't be a GBP much longer.
You are right, pencil him in as a HOF

β€’CBSSports.com’s Pete Prisco gave the Packers a B+ grade. Says Prisco: β€œTed Thompson always seems to pick good football players. Datone Jones owned the Senior Bowl week. He is a perfect pick for the Packers. He will be a 3-4 end.”
β€’ESPN.com’s analysis likes Jones’ versatility. Todd McShay expounds on that in this video.
β€’SI.com’s Chris Burke gives the Packers an A grade, saying β€œJones should be able to generate a little push alongside him, thus freeing up the Packers’ outside linebackers (specifically, Clay Mattews) to help slow down opposing offenses.”
β€’In this video, FoxSports’ Charles Davis says Jones helps Green Bay because he’s β€œa pressure guy.”
β€’Yahoo’s Doug Farrar thinks Jones and the Packers are a perfect fit and Jones β€œis set up to excel as a potential Defensive Rookie of the Year level.”
β€’CBSSports.com’s Evan Hilbert says Jones has β€œa knack for getting into the backfield and has used a variety of techniques to get off blocks” and has β€œloads of potential.”
β€’Collegefootballnews.com had rated Jones a second-round pick, but calls the selection β€œfantastic.”
β€’USAToday’s Nate Davis: β€œLittle surprise that GM Ted Thompson opts to wait and fill his hole at running back and continues to reload a defense that he overhauled in the 2012 draft. … Jones provides an insurance policy while adding more depth.”
ESPN’s Kevin Seifert says Jones seems like an obvious pick because he is β€œbig and fast.” He adds that β€œJones gives the Packers a physical specimen they haven't had on their defensive line in a long time.”
β€’National Football Post’s Russ Lande says β€œdo not be shocked when Jones has 10+ sacks as a rookie.”
β€’NFLDraftScout.com’s Rob Rang gives the Packers a B grade.
β€’Drafttek had targeted Jones as the Packers pick and of course likes the selection: β€œJones will bring some β€˜juice’ and explosion missing on the Packers' defensive line. He'll need to add a few pounds to play the five-technique, but that shouldn't be a problem. Jones packs a hard punch, and a scout told me he thinks Capers will bring out the WOW factor in this kid...”
He seems like a natural DE in a 3-4 scheme, but it's also possible he could bulk up and play interior DL as well. Part of me thinks TT is sending a subtle message to guys like Raji and Neal that they had better step their games up or they might not be around long term. Capers made an interesting point as well in that they have a lot of sub packages in this D so he tends to rotate a lot of DL in and out. His versatility allows them to maybe do some more things on D.
I'm just glad TT is addressing the defense. With Rodgers, I don't worry about points. But we have to give the offense a chance, and with how the Niners were able to run the ball with that damn spread option, we need to be faster on defense. Also need to be beefier and more athletic on the O'Line.

I was thinking about a Monty Ball type runner last night: I don't know if he's the answer, and it may sound like it's not such a big deal, but it sure would be nice to have a downhill runner to pick up those friggen 3rd & 1's that we struggle with so much. God those are drive killers when we can't pick those up.
Loved the pick last night; love it even more this morning.

I spent part of my drive in listening to the local sports talk radio guys. They spent considerable time just talking about Jones. They noted that there was no way a guy like Jones was going to get past Green Bay, and they were upset that Elway didn't trade ahead of us to grab him. They called Jones the most versatile guy in the draft, and one guy opined that he was simply the best DL in the draft.

It is early, but it sure seems like TT did it again.

Hmmm...so Pickett, Raji, Jolly, and Worthy can't be counted on? Quite a leap there. I haven't said it was a bad pick - all I said was there were a lot of DL on the roster - 9 for 3 positions...and there are still 6 rounds of the draft left. I wouldn't be surprised at all if a pure NT will be picked to help insulate vs. Raji's impending FA, which will make 10 DL.

By comparison, there are currently 12 OL for 5 positions (and that list includes Garth Gerhart, Joe Gibbs, Greg Van Roten, Kevin Hughes, and Andrew Datko).

So your counting on Worthy who may not play this season and Jolly who has been out of football over 3 years? Pickett's snap count will need to be reduced to maintain any effectiveness. We still don't know what Neal can or will bring for an entire season. I hope you are right because I feel DL is very thin but love the Jones pick last night.
I questioned leading up to the draft whether Jones would be the pick because I thought he lacked a true position. To me I didn't see the strength to hold the POA against double teams and seemed to be stifled when his initial pass rush moves failed. So I questioned whether he would be a fit in GB as a 5-technique on early downs and a 3-tech in Nickel. However it seems his best attribute that got him in drafted in GB is something that average fans like myself don't have access to...the intangibles. Great attitude, great drive/determination, etc. And it sounds like he wants to be in GB. Those are things only known to the pro talent evaluators. Love his attitude though and I'm glad I was wrong about his fit in GB. Sounds like he will fit in nicely!

...saw a stat last night that our RB's are 30th in league in "yards after contact" over the past 2 seasons ...lacey, Ball, or Bell would be OK with me.
So does anyone else think we have a front seven better suited for a 4-3 than a 3-4? I mean Perry and Jones were both 4-3 DE's in college and have the size, speed and strength of a 4-3 DE in the NFL. Bishop is probably a better 4-3 MLB than a 3-4 ILB and B Jones clearly has the flexibility to play all over. Hawk is miscast in a 3-4 too. CMIII is the only guy that may be better off in the 3-4 as an OLB, but I see the guy playing the same role as Von Miller does in Denver; OLB in base defense and pass rusher in nickel. Inside, Raji and Pickett seem like natural nose tackles and Neal, Worthy and Daniels all seem like natural, 'shoot the gap' 3 techniques. Jones can even move inside in passing situations. Am I missing something, or does this team have the personnel to play a 4-3 and they're being miscast in the 3-4 (or 2-4)?

Overall though, I'm excited by Jones. He reminds of Justin Tuck awhile back, in that everyone knew he was a good player out of college, but just didn't know what scheme and position he would play. Well Tuck worked out alright playing both inside and outside. Let's hope Jones work out that well too.
Perry also went into the draft last year bulking himself up in the anticipation of being selected as a 4-3 DE. Sounds like he'll be coming in more lean. The guy is a straight up athlete much like Jones so it's a matter of getting to the right weight and developing into the position.

I've read several snippets that claim there was concern with Jones as a 4-3 DE because he didn't have the ability to turn the corner on the rush. As GD pointed out, I can see why he looks to be a guy without a position but I really think he will be silly good as a 3-4 DE with great push up the gut, a good repertoire of pass moves and good technique and brains overall.
