Watching Jones tape. It's crazy how he excels when he lines up inside over the C. He's 280 and just beats guys that have 30-40 lbs on him by getting low with a fast 1st step. He's tough to block.
wow, how do you play for 4 different D coordinators in college?
thats some insane turnover.
go to be tough on the kids development with a new coordinator every season

You can see why the patriots wanted him so bad.
I Hope Datone & Eddie Lacy do well this year. It may propel us to our 14th championship.

New England was hot after him? Really? I didn't know that. Interesting.
I like pissing of Belichik. We smoked him on that Mathhews trade, and now scooped another potential defensive star out from under him. Am I bad person for giggling about that?

Don't forget the trade down with the pats where they drafted Chad Jackson & we drafted Greg Jennings.
Some Datone history:
Some history, HS through college
Plus a Q&A with college line coach and HS coach:
He's a sponge
The more I read about this kid the more I like.

Jones has the speed and quickness to be disruptive. And yes, I think Jones is going to win a lot of "cheese matches" this year! ![Big Grin](http://timesfour.com/x4graemlins/icon_biggrin.gif)

I think you would all do well to temper your expectations for this young man. Very very few rookies star at that position in the NFL.
Good point, Goalline. Last year at this time, we were all raving about Perry's strength and speed. Didn't really get a chance to sidplay it as he was nicked up early before going on IR.
Even if he simply contributes, and progresses as the season goes along, it will make a significant difference to a defense that didn't have a lot of bright spots last year. I'll settle for that, and I think it's realistic for us to expect that much.
I'm hopeful Worthy can get back on the field by November. I really liked the way he was playing inside. We're starting to get some talent on the D-Line if we can just stay healthy.
More stretching please......

Worthy got hurt just to take more plays off.

Irrational exuberance is half the fun of being a Packer fan
Datone Jones is going to make you say WOW, I promise
Like wow he's a great player or wow I can't believe we wasted a pick on this guy?
TT's Jamal Reynolds? I wouldn't be surprised if he ends up in the conversation for DROY just like Hayward was.
TT already drafted his "Jamal Reynolds" in Bu$tin Harrell
Datone is no bust, however, he is playing a tough position in the NFL.

Hopefully this isn't his Ahmad Carroll...
That would be AJ Hawk.

Can you think of one DT/5 technique off the top of your head who won DROY? It is a tough position to master as a rookie. Good ole JJ Watt made a quantum leap in his play towards the end of his rookie year. That's a best case scenario for 5 techniques.
I'm not expecting him to win it; just be in the conversation. I'm looking at 5-6 sacks which isn't unrealistic and would put him in the mix.

Nope
its a very tough position and "traditionally" has been manned by a beefy guy who could tie up two blockers. Not exactly a high profile position or body type
But Datone is different and that was part of the attraction to drafting him
Teams will expend resources blocking CMIII and Nick Perry while Raji gets some push up the middle. That leaves Datone with an opportunity to use his speed and length vs guards on 3rd down and GB has already said they look forward to moving him around.
Opposing OLs are used to the beefy, no-pass rush guys ala Jolly & Pickett. They aren't used to what Datone brings. And JJ Watt doesn't have CMIII over his shoulder like Datone will on occasion. Packers were already top 5 in sacks and sack percentage before he arrived....
Irrational exuberance grounded in solid speculation with a dash of high hopes and a smidgeon of good fortune thrown in
"It is Time"
I wonder what the data is when Capers has a fairly healthy DL just how much are we a true 3-4 defense vs all of the variances he likes to use.
IIRC when he had a healthy line with options, that's when he'd go 3-4 then 2-5 then 4-3 and then he'd throw in those bizzaro packages like psycho where I think just one DL lined up at the line.
I'm just hoping for health on this team. When coaches have the guys they need available, MM and most of his assistants have plenty of talent and experience to do great things on the field.

If Jones has a rookie year anywhere close to as good as Watt's rookie year I think we'll all be very pleased. By no means a DROY but I think he can have some good success.
Yeah, that is the issue. Watt had a uniquely good rookie year for a 5 tech. I would be thrilled as well, but I hope there are no whiners if Jones isn't half as good as a rookie. He still might come on like gangbusters as a 2nd year guy and more likely as a 3rd year player.
whiners gonna whine...
It's not unheard of for a young 5-Tech to come in and make an impact quickly. I think the problem, as others have mentioned, is that no one at the position makes much noise without Watt-like numbers. If those are your expectations, please place foot firmly on the break pedal.
Guys like Muhammad Wilkerson and Kendal Reyes won't find themselves in Pro Bowls or on any magazine covers any time soon, but are already in the discussion of Top 10 5Ts in their first few years.

One thing about Jones that stands out to me is the confidence he exudes. He's got a great mindset most similar to the way Clay was when he came in. He expects to belong. Whether he does it or not is up to him.
If he figures it out he seems like a guy that's going to get the defense fired up. You can almost see when guys come in with a false confidence. With Datone you get none of that.
He doesn't have to dominate to have a great season, either. If he can get 5 sacks he'll be doing great. Throw in a couple for Perry, a few for Bishop, more from Neal, and even Moses I think gets some more this year and it all starts to add up. Just more wood on the fire.
I'm actually feeling not over-confident, but not worried as much about the defense this year. I couldn't say even that last year. Still a huge question at safety, though. Progress is slow with young safeties and McMillian and Jennings still have a bunch more experiences to learn.
I think there is a lot to be excited for. Perry and Matthews is going to be pretty amazing I think. There's going to be a lot of people talking about these guys next year.
If the Packers stay healthy (they're friggin due), they're the class of the NFC.

Perry had two sacks (3 if you include the screw job when he destroyed Luck) in 6 games playing a position he's never played before.
If he plays 16 games he'll be close to 10 plus sacks in 2013.
I expect Perry will have a bigger impact on the D than Datone, and I expect Datone will have an impact.

When GB had a fierce pass rush, such as in 2010, Charlie Peprah looked like a rock solid safety. When they didn't have that in 2011, he was Marquand Manual.
The pieces they've added to the pass rush by way of the draft and return from injury will make a good prospect like McMillian prosper and Burnett blossom.
I'm not worried about S as long as the pass rush is as advertised.
I'm hoping some of these young UDFAs can bring some decent rotation. Lattimore has been on this team for two seasons and I haven't seen the guy play. Not even sure if they have him pegged for the outside or not. Going to need SMART rotational guys.
As far as safety, I don't see a "huge" question. I see a guy coming into his second year and seeing if he can take it to the next level. McMillan had some bad games but he really showed a overall decent skill set while trying to cover receivers for 5 minutes at a time.

hence the huge question, because if he can't...quote:I see a guy coming into his second year and seeing if he can take it to the next level.
