Can you think of one DT/5 technique off the top of your head who won DROY? It is a tough position to master as a rookie. Good ole JJ Watt made a quantum leap in his play towards the end of his rookie year. That's a best case scenario for 5 techniques.

Nope

its a very tough position and "traditionally" has been manned by a beefy guy who could tie up two blockers. Not exactly a high profile position or body type

But Datone is different and that was part of the attraction to drafting him
Teams will expend resources blocking CMIII and Nick Perry while Raji gets some push up the middle. That leaves Datone with an opportunity to use his speed and length vs guards on 3rd down and GB has already said they look forward to moving him around.

Opposing OLs are used to the beefy, no-pass rush guys ala Jolly & Pickett. They aren't used to what Datone brings. And JJ Watt doesn't have CMIII over his shoulder like Datone will on occasion. Packers were already top 5 in sacks and sack percentage before he arrived....

Irrational exuberance grounded in solid speculation with a dash of high hopes and a smidgeon of good fortune thrown in

"It is Time"
I wonder what the data is when Capers has a fairly healthy DL just how much are we a true 3-4 defense vs all of the variances he likes to use.

IIRC when he had a healthy line with options, that's when he'd go 3-4 then 2-5 then 4-3 and then he'd throw in those bizzaro packages like psycho where I think just one DL lined up at the line.

I'm just hoping for health on this team. When coaches have the guys they need available, MM and most of his assistants have plenty of talent and experience to do great things on the field.

If Jones has a rookie year anywhere close to as good as Watt's rookie year I think we'll all be very pleased. By no means a DROY but I think he can have some good success.
It's not unheard of for a young 5-Tech to come in and make an impact quickly. I think the problem, as others have mentioned, is that no one at the position makes much noise without Watt-like numbers. If those are your expectations, please place foot firmly on the break pedal.

Guys like Muhammad Wilkerson and Kendal Reyes won't find themselves in Pro Bowls or on any magazine covers any time soon, but are already in the discussion of Top 10 5Ts in their first few years.

One thing about Jones that stands out to me is the confidence he exudes. He's got a great mindset most similar to the way Clay was when he came in. He expects to belong. Whether he does it or not is up to him.

If he figures it out he seems like a guy that's going to get the defense fired up. You can almost see when guys come in with a false confidence. With Datone you get none of that.

He doesn't have to dominate to have a great season, either. If he can get 5 sacks he'll be doing great. Throw in a couple for Perry, a few for Bishop, more from Neal, and even Moses I think gets some more this year and it all starts to add up. Just more wood on the fire.

I'm actually feeling not over-confident, but not worried as much about the defense this year. I couldn't say even that last year. Still a huge question at safety, though. Progress is slow with young safeties and McMillian and Jennings still have a bunch more experiences to learn.

When GB had a fierce pass rush, such as in 2010, Charlie Peprah looked like a rock solid safety. When they didn't have that in 2011, he was Marquand Manual.

The pieces they've added to the pass rush by way of the draft and return from injury will make a good prospect like McMillian prosper and Burnett blossom.

I'm not worried about S as long as the pass rush is as advertised.
I'm hoping some of these young UDFAs can bring some decent rotation. Lattimore has been on this team for two seasons and I haven't seen the guy play. Not even sure if they have him pegged for the outside or not. Going to need SMART rotational guys.

As far as safety, I don't see a "huge" question. I see a guy coming into his second year and seeing if he can take it to the next level. McMillan had some bad games but he really showed a overall decent skill set while trying to cover receivers for 5 minutes at a time.
