Datone is a bad MF...

Kid could have gone to USC, Notre Dame, Oregon but picked UCLA because he bought into New-weasel's bull$hit and really though UCLA was going to be a real player on the national scene.

He got garbage conditioning and garbage coaching for 3 years at UCLA until Mora took over, and then he blossomed. If he had another year in college, I believe he'd become a top 10 pick.

UCLA had some bad teams under Slick Rick. They get some blowouts, and Datone would always play hard. He has a great motor, and he's pretty intelligent. I fully expect him to be an impact guy out of the gate...and he will just get better. Dude has the build to carry 300lbs easily.

And consider at the Senior Bowl, he was the only guy that consistently beat Eric Fisher in drills.
The biggest advantage is that he comes from a similar scheme to the Psckers where he played the same position he will in GB. That's a HUGE advantage. Guys like Worthy, Neal, and Daniels had to learn a new position, Jones is just learning new terminology at the same position. It doesn't mean he will be great from day 1, but he will certainly have an advantage that rookies rarely have.
I really think this move signals the fact that TT wasn't satisfied with CJ Wilson and Mike Neal (or Erik Walden) being able to hold the edge and chase guys down. On paper, Jones is athletic enough to do just that and his presence also means they can probably leave guys like Pickett and BJ inside where they belong.

TT has had mixed success with his DL picks, but that might have to do more with injuries than anything else. Harrell has never been healthy, and Neal's had his problems too. Worthy showed some flashes here and there but ended up getting hurt as well.

The two odd men out at this point are probably Daniels and CJ Wilson. Wilson has never really put it together and Daniels is simply too short I think to play at this level.

Angus McClure coaches the defensive line at UCLA and worked with Green Bay's first-round draft pick, Datone Jones. He said that besides Jones' size, he sets himself apart from others in two ways.

"He's different. He's unique. He can play inside with the big guys and get push on the quarterback pocket,"said McClure. "And then you can move out on offensive tackle and all of a sudden you can get a speed rusher."

Jones also endured a lot of coaching change. He's played for four different defensive coordinators.

"He's extremely adaptable and I think people are seeing that on film," said McClure. "He's very versatile; he can play multiple positions - because he has. If people wanted to see him play a three- technique, a five-technique, a nine-technique, if they want to see him rush a center - it's on film." continue

Packers' first-round pick stayed at home in Compton

"As a young man I had to grow up fast," said Jones. "For a lot of young people, they were traumatized by what they saw. But it made me realize, if I go down that same path, that could be where I end up. I know when people think of Compton they think it's a bad place. But it's not."

McClure said that besides Jones' size and talent on the defensive line, it was that attitude that allowed him to excel. "He is just so personable," said McClure.

Jones said he won't forget where he came from. That's why he, while playing at the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Ala., stopped by an inner-city church with teammate Johnathan Franklin.

"Where a lot of people were down and didn't have father figures," said Jones. "And a lot of relatives being arrested and falling into drugs, just messed-up communities. I wanted them to know I come from the same background and everything will be OK if you just trust in your parents, you believe in God and you do everything the right way.

"For me to be up there in front of 2,000 people, it was just so amazing. I felt so good after that. I was like, forget the game, being there and being able to do that in the community, it felt so great."

Friday night, Jones could hardly contain his enthusiasm for his new team, the Packers. He said he will be here in two weeks.

"I can't wait to report to Green Bay," said Jones. "I can't wait to see what a great city everybody says it is. I feel so honored to be doing something positive. I've made a lot of people here fans of the Packers."

This guy is going to have some major impact on the Packers defense. Adding him, Perry and Bishop all back to the defense...it'll be like a different team.

and it's not like they were dreadful for most of the year last year, finished...11th (i think) in scoring defense? so throwing these guys into the mix should raise them to the level they need to be at.
