I saw a post on twitter highlighting his play so I think he's doing well.
I thought Darnell Savage (@darnellsavage_ ) played one of his best games as Packer vs SF

Love seeing him in robber role for Pettine - reading QBs eyes & attacking in-breaking routes... Also triggering downhill in run game - no hesitation!
Using that explosive speed to disrupt! pic.twitter.com/sAB5dytuVv
I've been preaching patience with Savage. He has his moments & it's very common for Safeties to take as long as 3-4 years to "get it" same thing with Collins & Sharper.
Yep. Collins light did not come on right away. By his 3rd year, it did and rest was history.
He's so similar to Budda Baker and honestly, its one of the things I'm most angry with ABM about, Savage does NOT need to be your deep Safety. He's smaller than Amos, built more like a CB, but he plays his best football when he's allowed to be closer to the line. Let him loose ABM.
Dom Pettine trying to be the smertest guy in the room with the way he uses Savage.
Definitely was his best game since his injury last year.

I believe similar things were said on this board in "somewhat disappointing" year #2 of Ha Ha.

And Davante Adams
Hey, those two arguments don’t work together
I think he's been misused, like the way he was used Thursday night.
Coaching Matters.
Coach Lives Matter?

Finally clicked. Love it.
"We can play a whole bunch of different spots. We all can tackle. We all can cover & it allows us to do more."@_SmashAmos31 & @darnellsavage_ have been key pieces to the #Packers defense 📰 https://t.co/44KsNemn9I

Good piece about the improved safety play in general. Was quite disappointing early in the season.
He is just another reason why you don't give up on young players too soon. We fans sometimes expect guys to be superstars in their first or even second year, especially if they were high draft choices, but the pro game is hard. It sometimes takes more than a year or two before things click. We are seeing the young guys getting it: Gary (2), Savage (2), Lizard (2), Keke (2, starting to crack the rotation), Tonyan (3), MVS (3, an enigma), Greene (3, before the injury), and then there are the rookies showing up: Barnes, Runyan, Scott, Dillon, and in the last game Dafney. Jenkins (2) is just in a category all his own. I'm sure there's guys I've missed, but the point is that we can rag about them, but the young guys are starting to make some plays. It takes some time to adjust, and Savage is making the adjustement.
I never noticed how fast his recovery speed is. It looks like he's baiting the qb to throw deep, then he accelerates to make the play. Good timing on his breaks, too.
Thread reflects the optimism that occurred during his improved second-year play, but since then it's been inconsistency and disappointment. Brutal game yesterday and the team picking up his option year looms as a possible expensive blunder.
His play has gone from Savage to Brutal since that shot he took last year against the Rams.
I have noticed Savage indeed does shy from contact more times than not. That is why I was glad last year when Sullivan was going to take his spot one game and got insulted by Henry, took it on the chin and backed off. I still see Savage playing like a pussy cat more often than not. Watch him, over and over and over then BAM he gets an interception and all is forgiven.
Current PFF rating of 41 ... that ain't good ... in year 4 as a Packer.
There was a time when it seemed Savage was progressing and that he might become a solid contributor but in 2021 and thus far in 2022 he's been a lot more Haha Clinton-Dix than Nick Collins.
Something to do with Barry's passive scheme? Just not a player?
Whatever the explanation, that decision to pick up Savage's 5th year option is not looking too great at the moment.
Sad.
Brutal season continues and picking up his option year sure looks like a major blunder.
If that blow he took last year really is making him shy away from contact and thinking more about his life after football, I don't blame him. CTE is scary. But if that is his priority he needs to retire.
I know he's been compared to Clinton-Dix a lot on this board and for good reason. Dix took terrible angles and dove at ankles to avoid contact his last two years in Green Bay. It seemed like he was trying to protect an injury. Savage seems the same way. A couple of his missed tackles last night were crazy. . He is a flat-out liability. The safety options aren't great. I do think Innes Gaines will be the best fit once he is 100%, I don't think the Packers feel the same though.
Savage is currently PFF's lowest-rated starting safety in the NFL.

There’s times where I’ve been baffled by the rating system PFF has. This definitely is NOT one of those times. Their analysis absolutely looks spot on in this instance.
Honestly, I might take nearly every safety the Pack had in the ‘70s and ‘80s over Savage. Johnnie Gray, Tiger Greene, Mark Murphy (the bald one), fellow poster Steve Luke, those guys played hard. Savage does not, it’s pretty sad to watch, and maybe even sadder that the Pack owes him money next year too.
This captures it well. I think this is correct, but why would you ever trade up in the first round to get a one-dimensional safety, no matter good a fit for the current defense? It's bad enough if you drafted him sitting in your 30th overall slot, but they traded two 4th round picks to move up 9 spots.

It’s time to have a conversation about safety Darnell Savage. Savage was drafted as a first-round pick to play in Mike Pettine’s blitz- and man-heavy scheme that put more coverage emphasis on the safeties as the box was supposed to handle the team’s run fits. Under new(er) defensive coordinator Joe Barry, the Packers have played a quarters-heavy scheme that involves their safeties much more in the run game, a phase of the game that Savage tends to struggle with.

Savage looks soft, lost, and disinterested this season.
Sadly, I'm getting more of an M.D. Jennings, Jerron McMillian, or year 3-4 HaHa Clinton-Dix vibe than any of the guys you list above.
Those guys were not super-talented and all had trouble covering the pass, but they would put a lick on someone.
Heck even the terrible Kentrell Brice at least hit people.
Savage tackles like a punter at this point.

You forgot Chuck Cecil.
Savage was benched in the nickel and dime in favor of Nixon and Ford on the first two plays of the game against the Eagles last night.
On play 3, he suffered a bit of a mysterious foot injury while Hurts ran right past him on a long run.
Wonder if Savage gets shut down for the rest of the season now?
Wonder if Gutey regrets picking up the guaranteed 5th year option in 2023 on his 2019 1st round pick?
Savage has been the worst player on a disappointing defense this year. That said, you can’t blame him for yesterday’s debacle since he was barely out there.
I guess when it comes to Savage’s Green Bay career, I look at it in 2 phases. Under the Pettine regime, he honestly looked pretty good. Great? No, but showed enough his first 2 years to think he could get better and be an above average safety.
Not only did he fail to take that next step under Joe Barry’s regime, he’s fallen so far he’s almost unplayable.
It’s crazy how far he fell in terms of quality of play. Maybe him getting the extension money made him decide that he’s not going to sacrifice his body anymore going forward? Who knows the reason, but he just kind of looks like he’s just gone through the motions this year.
He has good speed with his legs. He has good catchup speed. I have seen that from him a number of times. However, his mind and his decision making seems slow. Is it him or is it on the coaching? I really don’t know.

You could say this about the entire defense
