Still, with a new DC who specializes in DB's, I would be curious to see what Hafley would do with Darnell including putting him closer to the LOS.

Gute made an interesting comment when talking about the Safeties at his presser yesterday.
He said: " safety and slot corner are basically interchangeable these days"

Sounds like he's thinking the same as you - try Savage in that role ?

14th ranked safety (If accurate) out of 64 starting safeties league wide.  Hmmm... yea he sucks.  Dump him.

Ranked by who?   How PFF got this credibility is beyond me.

Also, as someone said above.   Heā€™s been in position to make plays, but he rarely makes the play.

That's the biggest factor, IMO.

Maybe Hafley can "unlock" him but if the Pack keeps him, it should be at a reasonable price.

Savage would've made himself a whole lot more money if he didn't drop that Purdy INT.

In Dallas, I had to rewind the Pick 6 play like 10 times, I couldn't believe Savage actually made a play.

Started off by a MIT grad from Ireland. Sitting with his buddies (50 drunks in a bar) he tried to explain American football as he knew it from his time in rhe states. He (Neil Hornsby) has since scrubbed the internet of their true origin/inception.

Based on what I've observed over the years:

Fast forward a couple years and he was using his grading system and writing up what he saw on each play. Not long after that he was able to get a couple teams to buy his written analysis. After a year or two Collinsworth became aware of them and became a large investor - could be he heard "teams" were using this info. (I cannot find any recent record of NFL teams still using their [PFF] data).

Collinsworth convinced his NBC bosses to use the PFF grades, and off they went. Now many in the media, doing what they do best, are using the data without understanding the sausage making process.

And there you have the JJ Watt comment.

Tease.  Or maybe he's showing what he could do two years ago and rarely does now. Or maybe he's saying to put him closer to the LOS and turn him loose. Or maybe he just couldn't put together more than a one-play reel from this year...

Maybe some early auditioning for another job?  Seriously though, I've seen enough. I'd let him walk.

The weird thing about it is that his play IS a tease. He had a couple of games earlier this year when he was omnipresent and stuck his nose in for tough tackles, hustled, etc. And then he'd disappear. It's like he's on the edge of a breakthrough but then he backs away, afraid to fall into higher expectations. Now, the only thing I wonder is how much of that was due to Barry's play calls and what he wanted Savage to be and do? Almost every D player had the same thing happen: games of WOW! and then games of S***! It will be up to the new D regime to review every play by every individual player to see if it's the guy or if it was the scheme they were asked to play. I suspect we'll get a much better idea when we see who they keep, cut, let walk.

Rob Demovsky on Wilde and Tauche said this morning per his sources, the Packers are likely moving on from Savage.

Not exactly shocking news, but I did wonder if Hasely would try him at slot CB where many thought he would have faired better.

The defense our new DC is implementing, Savage is not a good fit at safety.

Would GB get a decent compensatory pick? šŸ¤”

Depends on his new contract. They have a shot at a Comp'd 3rd and I would think at least a 4th rounder.

I wonder if Gutey will take a shot at Kyle Dugger? Or if he fits in this defense, which I believe he would.

Cracks me up teams look at "first round traits" in a player entering his 6th season. I love his traits too but they haven't lead to anything special in 5 years on the field. The rare safety who makes too many mistakes yet also doesn't produce many big plays.

He's a solid safety, borderline starter. You could do worst. Probably needs to be matched up with a upper echelon safety to limit his issues. To me, that's worth like $4m APY contract with little guaranteed. Sounds like he's going to get more than that so no thanks.

You and Boris might be correct.  It will be interesting to see if the new DC feels the same way, and if so, what influence he has on it with the GB front office.

Well, I always felt Gutey was drafting the wrong DBā€™s for Barryā€™s lame defensive system. Thatā€™s not the case with Gutey and Haf.  Those man coverage guys will be perfect in this system. Stokes and Valentine can now do what they do best.
