Love the pick. Need to make sure you have the answers at LT and RT as long as Rodgers is behind center. Now they can focus on DE/OLB/WR/CB/RB...whichever direction they want to go. I hope they trade up in rd 2 tomorrow. Got the picks to do it
Not a sexy pick, but this definitely gives us much needed depth at OL, seeing how Newhouse and Lang are still unknowns.
Think of this:
LT: Clifton, Sherrod
LG: Sherrod, Newhouse/Lang
C: Wells, McDonald
RG: Sitton McDonald
RT: Bulaga, Lang/Newhouse
Suddenly this former weakness is looking pretty darn strong.

But what I'm really worried about is if he has an ass like a quarter horse.
Fine, fine pick here.
Shiny pick? Nope. But rarely are OL ever the flashy choice.
Despite all those injuries last year, 2 guys the Packers couldn't win with when they went down.
and Matthews.
Got to protect your franchise QB. No problem at all with this pick.

Derek Sherrod, OT, Mississippi State
6-6, 305 pounds
Sherrod is a great value at the end of round one and has the ability to be the Packers starting left tackle of the future. He's a good athlete who displays impressive change of direction skills and balance in pass protection and can create leverage in the run game as well. A bright kid who will be able to learn the playbook quickly and in my mind is a better prospect than both Nate Solder and Anthony Castonzo.
Gotta agree, good size, smart kid, performs on the field. Nothing wrong here, probably the BPA.
From his interview just now:
I'd love to see that infused on our OL. Not dirty mind you. But a OL that takes names and kicks asses.
BTW, he didn't give up a single sack his junior or senior year. He's very proud of that and should be. That's impressive.

Like this kid for us better than Carimi. He is a pass blocker. Carimi is a great fit for the Bears.

Interesting that one of his biggest knocks is that he plays too soft.

Sounds like a great player and a great guy. CBS rates him #25 overall. Scout.com rates him #22.
To summarize:
1. Very High Character and intelligence
2. Hard Worker, loves football
3. 3 year starter in a conference (SEC) loaded with NFL talent. Won postseason all conference awards awards for last two years.
4. Durable
5. Good Size, long arms
6. Good athlete
He's a nice guy, and I think that basically turns some scouts off and helped him drop to the Pack.

Still would have loved Ingram but man, the Saints sure paid a truckload for him. Silversteen saying that TT was in the running to move up, too- but with the price NO paid, I can see why he backed out (or maybe got bumped out).
So they move on and get a pure pass-protecting LT. Only thing that bothers me is that he is said to not grade out to run block very well. You take that of course, if he can protect your QB.
Back to back OTs in the first round. If Sherrod play as well as Bulaga did his first season as a Packer, they have a great thing going.
But does this mean Cliffy's done? I don't know if that's necessarily the case...

Draft mags:
USA today: #1 rated OT
Sporting News: #5 rated OT (Carpenter was #6, Carimi was hated on at #11)
PFW: #6 rated OT
Pro Football draft guide: #5 rated OT
Lindy's: #4 rated OT (ahead of Carimi)

The more I read about the newest packer the more I like him.
Thank you TT AGAIN!
Thank you TT AGAIN!
I don't care what anyone says about the "sexiness" of this pick, I'm riding on cloud 9 right now. When you have a superbowl MVP qb that has no weaknesses except a history of concussions, then you draft a tackle to protect his blindside.
Great pick TT! Best GM in the NFL without question, and we're lucky to have him.

I still havent seen the press conference posted yet.... not even audio. Still, kudos Ted for staying put and protecting the franchise.
I don't have the Clifton draft bio in front of me either, but when you read through Sherrod's strengths and weaknesses some of them remind me of what people were saying about Clifton- not enough lower body strength, run blocking needs work, mild demeanor, etc.
Had Heyward not been picked right before them maybe he's their guy but I am good with this pick. OL picks aren't sexy but we have a lot of interesting guys now in the mix (outside of the starters) with McDonald, Newhouse, Lang, and now Sherrod. This pick may not help the team until years down the road but that's OK.

all I wanna know is does he play at a high level!

rightfully so probably, but that's w/o even including Tauscher in the mix.
Sherrod is represented by Bus Cook. Uncomfortable silence in first negotiation meeting?
1996 draft, the Packers select OT John Michels. 1996 season, Packers win Superbowl. 1997 draft, Packers select Ross Verba.
Coincidence?

I wouldn't consider two draft picks (this year's 2nd round, 2012's 1st round) for Ingram a truckload. A truckload is what the Dirty Birds gave up for Julio Jones.
BTW, congrats on the Sherrod pick. Thompson has impeccable judgment in talent.
Have to say it - Sherrod fell into TT's lap. Which probably hurt.
Definitely not a sexy pick, but keeping Rodgers healthy is the #1 priority and Clifton certainly isn't getting any younger.
Last three times Pack has drafted an OT in first round, they have gone to the Super Bowl the next year, winning twice.
1996 - John Michels
1997 - Ross Verba
2010 - Bryan Bulaga
Let's keep the streak alive.

I'm guessin, when he comes off the ball too vertical with his body instead of bent-knees and body lean forward ...
I'm no expert but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night!
*Note - If they want to complain about Sherrod doing this, be glad we didn't pick Solder ... Holy Schnikies, they showed clips of him getting knocked off balance like a child.
This is where the intangibles come into play with projecting draft picks. I didn't see the nastiness/aggression from Sherrod when I watched him, and I thought that was something Thompson/McCarthy/Campen seem to really like from their Olinemen (in the past that's been one of the first things they've talked about when describing them). He's very athletic, very technically sound, and I think the combination of that and his intelligence/work ethic is what won them over. That's the biggest thing fans don't have access to.
That being said, it's a solid pick much like Bulaga was. Not a flashy, unlimited potential type pick, but I think at the very least we're going to get a good, solid lineman. It will be interesting to see where they put him because I'm of the opinion he would be a really good fit at RT. My hunch is that, if they think he's ready to play immediately, they will stick Sherrod at RT and move Bulaga to LG and back-up LT. I don't see Sherrod playing OG really...he has the size to play there, but never showed the strength in my opinion. Either way, our Oline just got a really solid addition.

I agree Armored. Good move for you guys.
The long term ramifications of getting Sherrod are what interest me. While he may not be a sexy pick it means the Packers in the years to come can make thoughts kinds of picks.
Love the pick!
As others have said, not sexy, but a fine addition.

I really like this pick. I love high character, intelligent kids who won't be trouble on my team. Sherrod is exactly that.
As opposed to sCam and Fairley. Trouble brewing with those 2 once they get the $$$.

It doesn't say anything about his "pad level"
Maybe GD can answer this: was Sherrod a major player in the Mississippi State running game? In other words, did they run to his side a lot?
And yes, I'm too lazy to look this schit up myself.
And yes, I'm too lazy to look this schit up myself.
I was reading one of the "expert" reviews this a.m. (can't remember which one), and it said that he was "the best lineman on the best rushing team in the SEC" last year. I'll take that.
I won't speak specifically on how much/how little they ran behind him because I don't follow MSU that closely. Their offense ran all over the field out of multiple formations which really athletic guys who improvised a lot so it's hard to know if they were intentionally running behind Sherrod or that's just how the play worked out or what. They asked their linemen to get to the 2nd level a lot and pull and trap a lot also.
This is what former NFL Scout Russ Lande has to say about Sherrod:
He gave him a grade of 7.9 which in his system means "very good starting player". I can definitely live with a very good starting player!
This is what former NFL Scout Russ Lande has to say about Sherrod:
quote:
Strong Points
Sherrod is a top level athlete with the foot quicks, agility, flexibility and playing speed to be a very effective OT. He has consistently shown the ability to slide out and cut-off the explosive edge rusher with no trouble and when he keeps his knees bent and blocks with base/leverage he can re-direct and slide well side to side to adjust to quick secondary pass rush moves. He is very
quick getting thru the LOS and can block LB out of the play easily. He can pull and lead block effectively on outside runs and up in the hole on the “Fill LB.” He does a very good job of getting to shaded DL, working around them and sealing them out of the play - VG reach blocker (Can even get to the DE who lines up very wide and can turn and seal him inside to get the corner for the RB).
Weak Points
While Sherrod is a very competitive blocker, he is not an aggressive one and that leads to him struggling to consistently play strong. He lacks ower/strength to drive DL off the LOS on straight ahead run blocks and gets stood up and pushed backwards too easily. He does not use his hands well in pass pro - Keeps hands low and grabs outside the pass rusher’s shoulders, which leaves his chest wide open and allows aggressive pass rushers to jolt and drive him backwards into the QB’s lap. He does not use his inside hand aggressively to cut-off the quick pass rush move back underneath. When he pass blocks without
base/leverage he is much less effective adjusting side to side to handle quick secondary pass rush moves.
Summary
Sherrod is a player whose athleticism jumped off the film and what gives him the chance to become a good starting LT in the NFL. He has the foot quicks to get out of his stance and into good blocking position fast and his ability to block with good knee bend (Base/leverage) helps him to stay over feet to maintain blocks consistently. He is very effective blocking out in space - Has the quicks/speed to get out into space easily and the athleticism to stay over feet to adjust and block a moving defender well. While he is a very competitive blocker, he is not an aggressive one and this often hinders an OT’s ability to become the blocker they have the talent to be. Overall, I doubt Sherrod is going to be drafted as highly as I have him rated because he does not physically dominate his man, but I am confident that his top level athleticism combined with his smarts and competitiveness will enable him to become a very productive starting LT in the NFL.
He gave him a grade of 7.9 which in his system means "very good starting player". I can definitely live with a very good starting player!
I love this pick, and for those of you paying attention, I called it. I knew Ted would pick a tackle. Many of you Grave Digger said it wouldn't happen.
Looks like my sources were correct.
