Notes:

Was ranked among the nation’s top defensive tackles as an Ohio prep. Redshirted in 2008. Started 11-of-13 games played at defensive tackle in ’09 and earned first-team Freshman All-America honors after posting 37 tackles, nine tackles for loss and 41⁄2 sacks with two passes batted down. Made all 13 starts in ’10 and led the team in sacks after recording 40-8-4 with three batted passes and a blocked field goal against Michigan. Earned first-team All-America honors in ’11 after recording 30-10 1⁄2-3 1⁄2 with one pass batted down and two blocked kicks in 14 starts. He became the first Michigan State defensive tackle to earn All-America honors since 1971 (Ronald Curl). Did not lift at the Combine because of a pectoral strain.

Positives:

Excellent size and natural girth. Is quick off the snap and very effective penetrating the backfield when he is slanting and stunting. Surprising initial quickness. Can be disruptive when he keeps his pads low and shoots gaps. Has enough size, mass and power to bull his way into the backfield and two-gap. Solid tackler.

Negatives:

Average processing speed — can be late to find the ball (and looked like he was thinking too much as he tripped over a bag in Combine drills). Too often coasted and took plays off — motor idles. Does not play with fire — mild playing temperament. Has underachiever tendencies — production did not meet talent. Struggles handling double-teams. Tired too easily and tended to wear down in games.

Summary:

Big, well-built physical specimen best suited to play in gaps in the pros, Worthy could garner interest from both 3-4 and 4-3 fronts given his ability to two-gap. However, he will reap the most return as a three-technique where he could pressure the quarterback.

Not to harsh the mellow...but I remember being pretty excited about Mike Kneel as well...hope this kid is more Raji in him. Allows Raji to play at DE some, also perhaps prepping for life after Pickett.
I am really excited about this pick.

So far the only media bishes about them is, taking plays off, need to grow up.... awesome talent/value

I am not worried about them getting motivated!

Awesome 2nd pick... Scary, ain't it Henry!

"I heard (Jon) Gruden up there and I used to work with Gruden so I know a little about him," joked defensive line coach Mike Trgovac about the ESPN commentator criticizing Worthy on air. "He's a big guy, quick for a big guy. He has good movement and really good agility and excellent instincts. He's very fast and will add some juice to our front. He can get off blocks and do a lot of what we like to do."

Trgovac assured that Worthy will play defensive end for the Packers. He was impressed with how Worthy performed against Georgia's offensive line.

After losing Cullen Jenkins in free agency a year ago, Green Bay was never able to find an adequate replacement. Free agent acquisition Anthony Hargrove should help in pass-rushing situations, but Worthy projects as a potential starter at the five technique. In 2011, Worthy finished with 30 tackles (10.5 for loss) and 3.5 sacks in 2011, earning consensus first-team All-America honors. The year prior, he had 40 tackles and four sacks.

"He is a younger kid but we did a lot of talking with his head coach at Michigan State," Trgovac said. "Dom has a great relationship with him...so we feel really comfortable with his personality. He's a good kid."

As much as I trust TT I absolutely HATE this pick

Worthy might have top 10 talent, but there's a reason he lasted until #51. The guy is L-A-Z-Y. What bugs me about the guy is that he only seemed to get motivated against the good teams he played this year- i.e. Michigan, Wisconsin, Georgia. He flat out disappeared in some games, and as a junior he should have gone back to school.

Please convince me this is not James Lee or Donnell Washington part deux.
Seriously- for the Big Ten fans out there. Why should we be excited about this choice?

I've watched a lot of games with Worthy involved, and he doesn't always show up to play. In fact, he freaking took downs off - especially passing downs at times.

I have faith in our coaches, but this is the classic boom or bust type choice. If he really works hard and dedicates himself we'll go back and call Tschmack an idot, but I'd say there's a 50% chance he is out of the league in two or three years.

Can't disagree with this.

I hear what you are saying--I thought the same about Worthy. The thing that makes me optimistic is the faith I have in our coaching staff to get the most out of him. He's also a great value pick here at 51.
