Damn, didn't think it was that bad. I thought concussions might knock him out of the league but something else did. Who knows, in a twisted way, this keeps him from having any more concussions and in the long run might just be better.
He probably asked to be released so he could play somewhere else.
Well this came out of nowhere.
I'm not liking the way this team is being managed or coached.
Maybe the Cowboys are more your speed for management styles?
Or Jags or Dolphins.
I agree with GBP1. Why always the diversion and double-speak with these guys? I liked Jared and was rooting for him to succeed both as an individual and as part of the team. How can both McCarthy and Aaron say great things about him then he doesn't see the field? You're right this isn't Dallas or Miami, or Jacksonville and we don't want it to be - that's why we're different. So don't BS the fans and act like you can just say whatever you want and get away with it. Between this kind of crap, the injury reports, and the kneeling during the national anthem around the league; my fun meter for the NFL is about to go below neutral.
Or they could be trying to talk him up so other teams give him a shot?
Why is it assumed McCarthy/Rodgers were lying? I'm sure Abby was looking good and probably had a good handle on the offense, but they don't make the decisions about who is kept. I have no idea why he didn't see the field, my only thought is that Cobb didn't come out of the game much as the Slot and the emergence of Ty Montgomery, who also plays the slot, reduced Abby's role. That's not a great reason when you have a guy who can play, but I'm unsure what the other reason would be. McCarthy likes to go with the hot hand, so if he thinks Cobb/Monty are working then he's not going to change it up. He was inactive against Chicago, so my assumption is that he's actually injured and they're just sick of dealing with his health issues when a guy like Allison, who is healthy, could get snapped up by another team at any time. Hate to see a guy with some promise go, but this isn't going to wreck the season.
My guess would be they really questioned his ability to stay on the field for an extended period and felt Allison had more upside. He's got enough talent that he'll get another shot and hopefully it works out for him.
anyone who's butthurt about losing their version of the great white hope needs to get over it. I was surprised he wasn't cut after training camp. the GBP gave him an opportunity, he couldn't take advantage. injury and better players will do that. Forward!
I too had some hope for Abby. Saw a video from practice last year from later in the season where the WRs were all running the same end zone square-in route. I thought Abby made more precise & violent cuts than any other receiver we had, but of course the coaches see every play of every practice & game, so there had to be a reason he never ascended on the depth chart.
He was given the opportunity to wear the jersey of the Green Bay Packers and play on the field with them. I'm sure he wouldn't trade it for anything.
Good luck to ABBY....accept him for what he was ......a very good college player, nothing wrong with that.
I doubt the praise from McCarthy and Rodgers was unwarranted.
Abby got hurt, and while it may not have been a 6-8 week thing that would support the IR designation, they needed healthy bodies now and he was not healthy, right now.
This release from IR / injury settlement could be a CBA / agent questioning of the extent of the injury. Someone mentioned maybe Abby asked to be released, another possibility.
Also, no reason to think he won't be back in GB next spring. The Coach and QB like(d) him a lot and that means something. Just not right now while he is not 100%.
I agree with Hungry5. I think Abby wants to play. He was going to be IR'ed, again, now with being waived, maybe he'll get picked up when healthy and get some playing time. It's a business.
Good piece by Silverstein with all the details. He was going to be cut regardless and it was either when healthy or with the settlement. Perhaps the fresh start and a change of scenery is for the best.
Ring....RINNNNGGG.
Hi Jared...This is Rick Spielman from the Minnesota Vikings....
Grave Digger posted:SEC players? You mean 19% of the players in the league? B1G only has 14%, but who is counting.
19%. That is a lot of spontaneous orgasms, bro.
They come in waves of about 50 per draft also, the orgasms I mean. When the final rosters are announced and 19% of the league is SEC, it's orgasm city dude.
I think Abbrederis could have legitimately had a pretty good career had he been able to stay healthy. I remember when he was a rookie in '14, the word out of camp was that he was having the best camp out of all the WR draft picks (Adams, Abbrederis, Janis) before getting hurt. The knee injury changed everything and then the concussions just sort of added a level of doubt as to his NFL future.
He was one hell of a college player though. Really made himself into one of the best WRs the Badgers have ever had by the time he left school. Guys like Al Toon, Lee Evans, Chris Chambers, Lee DeRamus, etc. were fantastic and by the time he left, JA was at least in the conversation with those guys.
I think it was his not being perfectly clean on his catches and dropping a few in the minimal chances he had that sealed his fate, on top of the other things mentioned.
Is Janis playing keep away here?
I'm looking forward to Bill Belichick turning Abby into a taller faster Wes Welker. Should make for great banter on the boards for the next few years.
He was perpetually injured. Might just be bad luck, but when he has that body type it's not surprising they decided to move on. Guy did everything he could with what he had to use. Have to respect him for that and wish him luck if he gets an opportunity with another team.
I was worried about his fragility when he posted the lowest bench press numbers of any player (regardless of position) at combine.

SEC???

Apparently, dude hates the weight room.
Abby was one of the guys that becomes a victim of the 'business' side of football, as opposed to poor performance and/or injury. Sometimes the numbers work against you.
The Packers are in a extraordinary situation with their roster not only because of injury, but also the positions where injuries have occurred. Being limited to 53 (and the 45 game day limit) plus a dearth of talent available for the thinnest positions are forcing moves that otherwise may not have been considered.
JMHO.
Be honest people, you saw this coming a long time ago
Get Ty the ball. Many ways. Until Jordy gets in bit more cardio. Ty is a special kind of talent.

Fixed it for you.
That's a bummer. What was the actual injury he had that led him to IR? Or was it all just BS? I'm assuming it was more his injury history. He missed time his first two years due to ACL tear, concussion and rib injury. Whatever happened this year was probably just the last straw.
Something I forgot until I checked Wikipedia: Abby was let go during final cuts last year, only to be signed to the practice squad. He was there for a month before he was promoted and no other team tried to sign him (unless Abby turned them down). Maybe he just wasn't as good as we all thought he was. Curious to see how fast he gets picked up.
If he wants to continue in the NFL someone will give him a chance. He has the skills to be a possession type of receiver. He will get open and move the chains. He can also return punts.

Unpossible!
