JSO readout of MM presser:

The following is a summary of coach Mike McCarthy's comments from his Friday press conference:

  • (On Bryan Bulaga) Going through the evaluation process for a knee injury. He is out for this Sunday.
  • (On Don Barclay) Any time you have the opportunity to train, whether it's right side or left side, is valuable. ... That's the versatility you look for in all your players. Don Barclay has that, JC Tretter has that. It's what we look for in all our guys.
  • (On Barclay playing right tackle) I think Don Barclay is a football player. He has lined up and played for us and played well. JC Tretter is a heck of a football player. I like all our guys.
  • (On Barclay's struggles in camp) I think Donnie is taking the normal path coming off an ACL injury.
  • On whether Barclay will start at RT: That is not clear. I’m not declaring any starters right now.
  • (On Morgan Burnett's health) As long as he comes out of Saturday's practice clean, I think he'll be ready to go.
  • (On Richard Sherman in the slot) I don't think it's a schematic change, I think it's a position change. ... It's more for matchup reasons. He played in the slot against us last year.
  • (On Kam Chancellor) He's an all-pro football player. ... You can see his real leadership on the field. He's a heck of a football player.
  • (On Datone Jones) So far so good. He came out of practice clean yesterday. I think him and Morgan are similar. ... I thought he did good with his reps yesterday. There's some things that you change in your game plan from week to week, so there's some new wrinkles he will hit during the walk through today.
  • (On the week so far) Practices have been good. I pay close attention to the practices from Week 1 to Week 2. ... The way practice is structured, the look teams (are different after cutting from 75 to 53). I thought the practices have been good.

I agree with this on Barclay:

“He turned out pretty good,” Campen said of Barclay, who missed all of last season with – you guessed it – a torn ACL. “Everybody was busting his chops. I said, ‘Give the kid a chance.’ You could start seeing it happen for him before the third preseason game.”

I think he will be fine subbing for Bulaga. If not, they have plenty of help to roll his way.

If they use a FB to cover Barclay they lose an element of running game but max protect is better than watching Rodgers get pasted all game.

Absolutely right. Even before he was injured he was shaky in pass protection. Wasn't he the RT responsible for the hit that broke Rodger's collarbone? I seem to recall him standing there as Shea McLellin of all people got around him and Rodgers landed awkwardly.

Whatever they end up doing for this game, my two requests are:

1) Don't get conservative. I hated that game plan last year in the opener - the definition of playing scared. You've got the MVP, their secondary is half of what it used to be...go after them this week.

2) Be flexible...if whoever they have at RT is getting beat, you have to have plan B and C ready within the series. Can't wait until the half to make adjustments.

To add:

RTFB!!!!!!

Lacy averaged 4.5 yard per carry last week. With no Kam, if Lacy/Starks are tearing off 4-5 yards a carry in long, methodical drives so be it. One of the reasons I'm glad to see MM without play calling duties. It was just one week, but Clements/EB seemed fairly committed to the run last week.

Even with Barclay (or insert_______), Linsley, Sitton and Lang make for a hell of an interior OL

Maybe one of these other kids is a better fit. Josh Walker?

That's what I'm wondering.  Looking at MM's statements I'm almost wondering if they may even give Tretter a run.

Maybe confidence is lacking in the repaired ACL? They are a very cautious team with regards to injuries. McCarthy did mention Tretter in the presser when discussing the RT.

Was thinking the same thing based on MM's response:

" (On Barclay playing right tackle) I think Don Barclay is a football player. He has lined up and played for us and played well. JC Tretter is a heck of a football player. I like all our guys."

"On whether Barclay will start at RT: That is not clear. I’m not declaring any starters right now."

Doesn't commit to Barclay and a unsolicited mention of Tretter....hmmmm

My guess is that MM just wants to keep the Hawks guessing and it's Barclay. He's not particularly good in pass protection but AR has two good wheels for this game and I'm not that concerned. I expect Don to play reasonably well and if he struggles they can adjust.

Don't quite understand some of the panic I've seen from some Packer fans out there. If they lose the game, I doubt it'll be because Bulaga didn't play.

Something that simple could have a pretty big impact on this D.

No doubt Clay is talented but when has he ever displayed leadership? Did he fill the leadership void after Woodson left? Was he named a defensive captain last season? Taking himself out of the NFCC game and quoted afterwards "gotta look out for number 1"? When he complained about his sack total going down when moved to ILB?

Did you watch Buluga get destroyed in one of the previous Seattle games?  I did.  And now he's out.

You know what? I just completely disagree.

Some people lead by example, by their play on the field. He's never been a vocal leader. My point is him taking on this roll may change that. His teammates look up to him. No doubt.

I think mr21mr21 has a point about Clay and leadership in the traditional sense, but he is much like C-Wood in leading by example. As for the look out for #1 and sack comments... I'm guessing the guys in the locker-room know where he stands and that they can count on him. I'd also bet that most NFL players couldn't give two sh!ts what fans think.

FYI....bet on Seattle placed (+3.5)

Seattle is screwed because there is NO WAY I'm going to get to cash that ticket.

I think Eddie Lacy is going to have something to say in the outcome of this game.

Nobody is talking about Eddie Lacy....Nobody

Packers D is going to need to dominate like that once again. This time, the offense won't fail us

What message did he send to his teammates by taking himself out of the game at the end of the NFCC?
