Seems like a pretty fair trade straight up. Switched to bullpen this year, gave up 3 runs in 7 games, 10 innings with 11 K, 7 BB. Both players had been struggling and working their way out. Faria has a plus fastball and changeup, and a good ground ball righty out of the bullpen, with starter experience. Could be good.

Jesus was out of options and they got something for him rather than letting him go.

Those two moves are all about the bullpen. Just added three arms there today. Maybe they are looking to use Faria as a SP...

Skully, I wouldn't doubt if they work more trades with SF looking at these moves. Maybe not.

Check out Black's changeup....

Dude also pumps a 99.1 mph heater - and that's his AVERAGE heater. Black also has 5 years of control. While Dubon might have been our 3rd best prospect, he was still not a Top 100 player.

Ray Black was the prize of this trade, but Pomeranz has been lethal over the past two weeks in relief for SF. Solid arms to give Hader a break.

Astros get Greinke.

They now have three #1 starters (probably 3 of the top 10 starters in MLB) with ERAs under 3.00 and with WHIPs at 1.00 or below. Verlander is a Hall of Famer right now, Greinke has at least a chance, and Gerrit Cole has been a three time all-star.

Verlander makes 28 million, Greinke makes 34.5 million, and Cole makes 13.5 million. That's 76 million for those 3 starters.

The Brewers have 21 pitchers on the active roster or injured reserve. Those 21 players make about 47 million. 17 million of the 47 million is on the DL. That means that their currently active 14 pitchers together make less than Greinke and about what Verlander makes.

But the economic system in baseball is just fine.

The main reason the Brewers are competitive is that they've arguably been very judicious in handing out big contracts. Grandal (16 million), Moose (7), and even Braun (19) and Cain (14) have produced enough to justify their contracts.

But the biggest reason is that they have a guy that should be making what Bryce Harper and Machado are making under contract for 3 more years at under 15 million a year (and only 9.75 million this year). WTF was Jeter thinking?

Yeah, Lyles looked great and so did Albers. I know what you’re talking about w the cringe, but he’s been really good. Jeffress has been rough. They needed that win and  August-October is a great time to get hot.

Amazing that HOU payroll.

The camaraderie is solid on this team and the core is in tact. I’m thinking Stearns’ adds to our pitching staff might be enough to make a run at it.

Well, no one is running away with it, that’s for sure. The Brewers have better baseball in them- we’ve seen it. They’re just struggling to actually do it. If they catch their stride, and guys start pitching the way they should be capable of, they could have a run in them. But ****... we’ve been waiting an awfully long time for them to get it going.

The #1 thing the Brewers need to do if they want to take another step is figure out how to turn Corbin Burnes into what Woodruff became this year.  I don't think any fan or member of the Brewers org ever expected Burnes to be anywhere close to being as awful as he was this year.  They've got to get that guy straightened out to help stabilize the starting staff.

If he doesn't turn it around, the organization is in a little bit of trouble as there is nobody else in the upper levels of the minors that has Top Of Rotation type potential.  I suppose you could still hold out hope for Jimmy Nelson as he truly was a TOR guy before his injuries, but he just doesn't look like the stud he once was.

I am also, but I also don't think there is much evidence he is a #1 top of the rotation starter. He has had one good year (actually 2/3rds of a year). He was 12-6 with a 3.49 ERA and a WHIP of 1.25. Even that, while good, isn't top of the rotation numbers. If that was the beginning of him figuring it all out and he was going to continue to get better, then maybe. But that's a big if.

Other than that year, he's got a 21-39 career record in 450 innings pitched with an ERA of 4.50 and a WHIP of 1.42.

He's probably a good middle-of-rotation guy who can eat up some innings and keep you in ball games if he gets healthy.

Last year was ligtning in a bottle in terms of everything going right in the bullpen. Chacin was great and Miley was under-appreciated for his end of year performance. But they got as far as they did because the bullpen was absolutely lights out. That's not happening this year, other than Hader until recently.

The other playoff years in the last 30 years have been driven by top of the line starters. In 2008, they had Sheet and Sabathia. In 2011 they had Greinke and Gallardo (near his peak). Those types of guys cost money. The Brewers don't have a pitcher making over 8 million a year.

Right now, the Brewers rank 23rd in spending on the pitching staff.

There are also 84 pitchers (58 starters) making more than Chacin is, and Chacin is their highest paid guy.

To put in bluntly, they didn't spend enough on pitching and their bullpen doesn't have about 4 guys who combined made less than 7 million pitching at an all-star level like they did at the end of last year (Hader, Jeffress, Burnes, and Knebel).

Devin Williams? Nice call up! Just cranked his 3rd MLB K on some high 97 heat! Hoping he pops his 4th here to end the 7th

How about Keston Hiura with his 1st multi HR game? Phenomenal. KesDaddy has impressed the F outta me.

... Ach! Williams threw a great breaker and dude just excuse me-d it to score a run. Too bad. It was a great pitch low. The kid looks good.

Fireball Freddie to finish this one out. Beautiful job! Peralta’s heater & breaker both on point. Nice sweep! Beat PIT 12 out of 16 on the year.
