Spencer Havner Part Deux?

Borland will be a good pro.  He probably won't wind up in GB because if they even take an ILB, he's going to be a bigger guy.

I think Abbrederis has a better chance of getting plucked by Ted in the mid-late rounds if he's still around.

Which round does a prospect start hoping he's not selected and makes it to UDFA? Is it 4? 3??? Looking at all the UDFA's that end up working out I have to think there's a tipping point in being drafted and having control where you end up. If you have 4th round talent aren't you better off picking your spot knowing offers are going to be coming 5 minutes after the draft wraps up? If you are selected 4th round you're not getting huge money and you may end up in a bad spot on a team that's a bad fit. You play out your rookie deal and the money is no better for the next contract (if one's even offered) You go undrafted but get to decide where you go you are improving your odds of getting a better 2nd contract.

I look at guys like Borland and Abby (probably more Abby) and wonder if he's better off going undrafted. And then the question becomes, does a player on the 4th round or later bubble sandbag the combine / pro-day?

So out of these 50 FAs, the Packers aren't a "good fit" for any of them (including Shields).

Is that because the Packers hardly ever make a splash in the FA pool, or because the Packers are so friggen talented they don't need no steeeenking free agents, or because the article was written by Bedard?

Agreed Ammo. If a guy goes 2nd round he's getting a serious shot at starting, a good rookie deal, and every opportunity to get a better 2nd contract.

I'm just wondering what point a player is better off falling off the board completely and picking his spot. IMO 4th round seems about right.

I think a lot depends on who drafts you. Teams like Cleveland or Raiders or Vikes always seem to be a mess and being a late round draft choice there might not be so good. On the other hand teams like Green Bay, Pats, 49ers seem quite solid with draft choices and you get every chance to make the team.

Mock away...

1. Justin Gilbert, CB, Oklahoma St.
2. DaQuan Jones, DT, Penn State
3. Deone Bucannon, S, Washington State
4. Shayne Skov, ILB, Stanford or Max Bullough, ILB, Michigan St.
5. Martavis Bryant, WR, Clemson
6. CJ Fiederowicz, TE, Iowa
7. Jalen Saunders, PR/KR, Oklahoma

Hmmm...I'd say 6th or 7th. I think teams are much more hesitant to cut even a 5th rounder after his first camp. I feel like UDFAs have to supplant somebody while a pick in the first 5 rounds just has to hang onto a job.

I've read before that the 6th and 7th rounders are generally the "preferred" UDFA's that teams don't want to miss out on.

Everyone needs to read up on Louisville OLB Marcus Smith. He's going to be a stud 3-4 OLB in the NFL if he gets stronger and improves his run D. He has as good a first step as ANYONE in the draft, Clowney included, but his game just isn't complete at this point. I'm hoping GB trades back from round 1 and acquires multiple 2nd round picks like they did in the '08 draft. It's such a deep draft that I think that kind of scenario might be likely. I'd like to see something like this:

2a. FS Terrance Brooks (Florida St.)

2b. ILB Shayne Skov (Stanford)

2c. OLB Marcus Smith (Louisville)

3a. TE CJ Fiedorowhatthehell (Iowa)

3b. (Compensatory) DE Josh Mauro (Stanford)

Also, in thinking about it...Bullough probably isn't a good idea. We need an ILB like Bish who can cover...putting Bullough next to AJ Hawk is not smert. Skov aint' exactly a speed demon, but he seemed to cover TE just fine.

We might be better off going with an OLB and converting him to ILB to get a bump in speed.

Brooks isn't a hitter, in fact I would say tackling is one of the weaker areas of his game although I would hardly call him a poor tackler. He's a pretty solid all around Safety and would go perfect with a guy like Burnett who is strong against the run. I think the fact that he's not an intimidator like Jonathan Cyprien last year or Calvin Pryor this year pushes him down into round 2.

I'd like this.

A run on QB's will keep door open for potential traders.  Edge rushers like Ford or Van Noy could be a prime target at #21.  There are GM's that look at moving up to take any player in front of an adversary any where in a draft.  And finally, dum always creates trading partners, to grab the best punter for instance.

What gives people the idea Thompson if going to trade out? He's only done that once since he's been here, people on this board make it sound like he does it every year and he doesn't, it's the later rounds he does that in

I don't think he necessarily will trade out, but I think he should trade out. To me that is the ideal scenario considering the depth of this draft. I'm not sure who on this board is making it sound like he does it every year?

Here is the latest list of prospect meetings for the Packers:

Tre Boston, S, North Carolina (EW)
Max Bullough, LB , Michigan State (EW)
Zach Mettenberger, QB, LSU (COM)
Trent Murphy, DL, Stanford (VINT)
Louis Nix, DL, Notre Dame (COM)
Calvin Pryor, DB, Louisville (COM)
Marcus Smith, LB, Louisville (COM)
Kyle Van Noy, LB, BYU (COM)

EW= East/West Shring Game

COM= Combine Interview

VINT= Very Interested

I love that they're talking to Marcus Smith and Van Noy.

Have not seen Smith play, but Van Noy is the real deal...a bit more athletic than Skov IMHO, but just a great player.

Bullough scares me with his size/speed...we need ILB that can run and cover TE and he ain't that IMHO.

The Dolphins are supposedly gauging trade interest in Dion Jordan and possibly Cameron Wake and Mike Wallace also. I didn't understand the trade up for Jordan last year when they went to a 4-3 (he's best suited for 3-4 OLB at 8-10# lighter than Matthews).

In order for Carr to become a better NFL QB than his brother, he needs to become a better decision maker. He is a very talented kid, high character, hard worker, more of a gym rat than his brother...but he is also more of a "gunslinger." He wears #4 in homage to Bert...for the first part of his career he patterned himself after that style. He has gotten better, especially the last two years under a new OC who has tried to teach him to harness that desire to whip it into a tight window or down field.

Coming to Green Bay, having to sit behind AR for a few years and go through MM's QB School would be the best thing for him...but I think he will end up in Minnehonky, or Cleveland and be thrown into the fire soon.

Read today that Jerruh should trade Romo to Houston for the 1st pick which he could use on Manziel.  Cowboys may have to throw in their 2nd round to get Houston to do this. If Jerruh should offer this to Houston I think it would take maybe.... 5 seconds for them to not only say YES but HELL YES!!!!

Romo will be 34 next month and he isn't getting any better

I'd guess he's probably worth a 4th

Nobody is giving up a 1st round pick for an old, short, not-clutch QB

Matt Flynn spotted him a 23 point lead at home and Romo lost the game on yet another poorly thrown INT. The train-wreck in Dallas already started and their fate was sealed when they did all the re-structures. Jerruh thought he was close; he wasn't... and now he's going to have to start all over again

Cut & gut is his only salvation, but he can't do that or the Palace will be empty

He's in it to make cash, that's his Super Bowl... but the cow-rubes fans haven't figured it out yet
