Historically, we've never really had many fast starts to the season. I was referring more to the Defense getting momentum, as we really don't face many offensive juggernauts until week 8 vs. KC, and 5 of our first 8 games are at Lambeau.

Not talking about strength of schedule at all, but, the Bears are going to suck again, the Queens will suck, again, and Detroilet will still be Detroilet.

Also, this won't be an all-new system they will be walking into on D. There is a lot more understanding by the players of Pettine's scheme, how he disguises, and how other players know their own roles, and each other's in switching, etc. This year 2 in Pettine's system is really going to help a lot of the players from last season, and how they can share info with more understanding with the rookies.

Since when did the Bears have to be good to make things difficult for the Packers?  There were times when I thought they would be pushovers - but they weren't.  You can bet both the Bears and the Vikings have those games against GB circled on their scheduled.

Pettine's defense might be in it's second year, but some key players will be in their first year with the system.  Those 3 key free agents included.  Savage looks to be a day one starter without having played in a real game yet.  All I am saying it may still take time, given good health, for the pieces to come together once the season starts.  But once they do, it should be fun.

Finally, don't forget the new offense.  AR might still be the QB, but whatever MLF is giving those guys still has to come together to function in the way some think it will - and that takes time and reps together as a unit.  You say all that happens in TC and preseason games.  I say not when starters only get one or two series together during PS games, and not when there are also a bunch of other players taking snaps away from the would be starters in TC.  Don't get me wrong, some of those things are necessary.  But it is only when the season starts that the team starters get consistent game time with each other.

I want GB to win the SB this coming season as much as anyone else.  But I am not blind to potential pot holes in the road either.

Ghost of Lambeau, I'm not blind to the potholes along the way... not at all. I was just having some fun at the expense of our NFC North rival wankers.

We've done nothing for two solid seasons, but, I'm -optimistic- based on what I've heard and seen that we now have a lot more talent on board that can truly compete and win under the right circumstances, throughout this 2019 90 man roster. Should be a fun TC battle for the Final 53.

It's easy to see they've added athleticism & speed, along with proven experience at key positions, vs. some mind blowing derelict additions during Ted's last four years (without bashing the guy after knowing what he was dealing with).

Ted made some horrific selections, along with some great ones too (Davante and Linsley in 14, Lowry, Martinez, Fackrell and Clark in 16, Jamaal Williams and Aaron Jones in 17)... That's EIGHT players making significant contributions to this team out of 34 selections in Ted's last 4 drafts. Maybe King does something? Maybe Jones does...? (God, I would ****ing LOVE for King to stay healthy. Maybe Chris Gizzi being promoted to Strength & Conditioning Coordinator helps everyone in that regard. Mike McPizzabox's S&C had been a complete joke since 2010).

In comparison, I can see 8 potentially solid contributors out of Gutey's 2018 draft alone: Alexander, Jackson, Burks, Madison, Scott, MVS, ESB and Bradley. Two specialists, but we need good, reliable specialists on STs. Keeping Gary out of the 2019 equation because he's so polarizing, Savage, Jenkins, Sternberger, Keke and Summers are the most impressive drafted adds to me. Dexter Williams, Gary and Hollman could all surprise.

Maybe we get 2 or 3 rookies that can come in strong like Alexander did last season, which would be great (and 2-3 is no doubt optimistic). Listening to Blake Martinez discuss the issues in being new to this NFL level of schemes and responsibilities reenforces the idea that it does take a good couple of years before many of these players get their real legs under them, with full knowledge of the system, their responsibilities in it as well as their teammate's responsibilities. That's what he said allows for the big, big plays: those 1-2 second intervals where you aren't thinking, looking over your shoulder for help, etc. but rather knowing & immediately acting on your responsibility. I think it will be fun to see this team develop over the next two years. THAT's what has me thinking this 2019 Packers D can be really special.

Nope! I’m going to the KC game and I’ve never seen the Packers lose. 15-1 it is!

Three so far.

Agree, BD! This was me when our defense was in the hands of the Rug Doctor. Last year under Pettine's steady hand, I was better.

Hopefully, as Pettine enters his second year with more talant, when the D takes the field I will be

Ha Ha might actually be better in that defense than Amos if he can just sit back and play center field and use his superior playmaking skills. But, if he is consistently called upon to cover one on one or to make tackles, forgetaboutit.

Amos will definitely be better in our defense where the safeties are required to be more well rounded.

Seriously, when is the last time HHCD made a play?
In 9 games with the 'Skins, he was credited with 3 PD, 1 FF, and 1 FR.

To be as fair as possible, he was credited with 66 Tackles (56 solo). It was interesting to note that was more than double (triple the amount of assists!) than he did in 7 games with the Packers. He also had a TFL,and 2 QB Hits, and 3 INTs , and none of those came in Washington.

I doubt he's going to all of sudden become Ronnie Lott in Chitcago...

HHCD reminded me of a bit like Darren Sharper. No, not the serial rapist part.

But like Sharper, he'd just be at the right place at the right time and get easy INT after easy INT. Once in awhile, he'd drive for one but all too often it just seemed he'd turn around and there was the ball, floating right to him.

It was great for his stats. It made him look like a ball hawk, but in reality, not so much

HHCD will milk what is left of his NFL career, save as much $$ as he can, and then look back at a very underwhelming time in the league and likely not give a shit. He has a lot of other interests outside football and really has done little more then rely on the talent he has to get by.

I guess I can't blame him but it does make you wonder that if he had the kind of work ethic, say like Donald Driver or a Leroy Butler had, what kind of career he really could have had. You just never got the feeling he did the little things like putting extra work in the weight room, looking at film, studying individual opponents etc. Butler will preach to this day when I hear him on talk radio that's what separates you from an average player vs. an All Pro. It's the little things.

For a 1st round pick, that's pretty disappointing.

Ha! Hawk... that's funny. The reels are freaking all over the place!

Great article here on TCU's DC Gary Patterson, and how the NFL has been working to glean information from him on how he handles various situations.

https://www.si.com/nfl/2019/07...l-defensive-concepts

I can see Mike Pettine is employing many of the same concepts. Versatility is key, leading more credence to that component being a big reason for Daniel's recent release.

I love that we nabbed Ty Summers in the 7th round, who played for Patterson for 4 seasons at TCU. I think he is going to be a true gem and steal for the Packers at ILB. Also wonder if the plan isn't for him to take over for Blake Martinez if they can't reach an agreement on extending his contract. Summers has the same kind of football intelligence, great instincts, solid coverage and tackling skills, plus, he's bigger and faster. Same "Elite" SPARQ and RAS ratings as Gary. I think he will provide quality depth at ILB.

This should prove to be a really fun season for the Packers, with a renewed offense, and a talent loaded defense in year 2 of Pettine's system.
