Waived/injured:43 Broughton Hatcher Released: 42 Matt Orzech, 16 Pat O'Donnell (Aug. 28)Here are some noteworthy items:
- With receiver Malik Heath, linebacker Brenton Cox Jr., and running back Emanuel Wilson all making the initial 53-man roster, the Packers are on the verge of extending their streak to 19 consecutive years with at least one undrafted rookie making the Week 1 roster. It's the first time since 2018 that multiple undrafted rookies have made the 53.
- Heath is the first undrafted rookie receiver to make Green Bay's roster since Darrius Shepherd in 2019, while Cox is the first UDFA edge rusher since Chris Odom (2017). Wilson, who signed with Green Bay in May after being released by Denver, led the NFL with 223 rushing yards on 38 preseason carries with two touchdowns. He's the first running back to make Green Bay's initial 53 as an undrafted rookie since Jhurell Pressley in 2016. Forty-two undrafted rookies have made the 53-man roster during the Packers' streak.
- First-year punter Daniel Whelan made the Packers' initial 53-man roster after veteran Pat O'Donnell was released Monday. If Whelan plays Week 1 against Chicago, he'll be the first Irish-born player to play in the NFL since Neil O'Donoghue's final season with the St. Louis Cardinals in 1985. Born in Dublin, Ireland, Whelan moved to the United States at age 13. The 6-foot-5, 214-pound punter made the All-XFL team with the DC Defenders this spring before signing with the Packers in May. Whelan averaged 45.7 yards (37.7 net) on six preseason punts, while dropping three inside the 20-yard line.
- Eric Stokes remained on physically unable to perform, meaning the former first-round pick will miss at least the first four games of the regular season. That also leaves the Packers with just four cornerbacks on the active roster, their fewest entering a season dating back to at least 2008. Since winning Super Bowl XLV, Green Bay has gone into Week 1 with five or fewer cornerbacks on just two occasions (2018 and 2022).
- For the first time since 2016, the Packers didn't carry a long snapper on their initial 53. It's still possible Green Bay could retain Matt Orzech and is simply using the extra roster spot for a player who'll be placed on injured reserve Wednesday. In order to be designated to return off IR during the regular season, players must be carried through to the initial roster. It wouldn't be an unprecedented move. The Packers previously went that direction after the final roster reduction in 2016, with longtime long snapper Brett Goode filling a roster spot vacated by cornerback Makinton Dorleant's placement on IR. Dorleant was designated to return later that season. Orzech was one of Green Bay's two unrestricted free-agent signings this offseason. The Packers' other UFA signing, former San Francisco safety Tarvarius Moore, was placed on injured reserve.
- The 11 offensive linemen are the most the Packers have carried on their initial roster in at least a decade. Only twice have they carried 10 (2017, 2022).
- Green Bay kept 11 of its 13 rookie draft picks. Seventh-round receiver Grant DuBose was released, while seventh-round running back Lew Nichols waived injured. The former Central Michigan standout spent most of training camp with a shoulder injury.
- All 11 players from the Packers' 2022 draft class made the roster.
- The Packers' 53-man roster is comprised of 45 former draft picks and eight undrafted free agents. Thirty-four of the 53 players were drafted by General Manager Brian Gutekunst.
Tenuta will be the guy headed to IR, a bit surprised Carpenter made it. Obviously that was all about STs since he's evolved into a man without a position.
So they did let Alex McGough go. Dang, I liked himโฆโฆ๐ฅน
You're just mad they only kept one white QB.
11 OL is a lot. And 4 CBs is not enough although I get Stokes will be back hopefully in about 5-6 weeks. Have to think Nyman is still on the trade block, the Packers are likely just waiting for a needy OT team to make a call once injuries hit in the regular season.
Frustrating that Newman is still on the 53.
There are 11 OL today but itโs widely reported OT Luke Tenuta will go on IR tomorrow, clearing a roster spot, probably for a LS. There may be other players in this category (WR Wicks has been rumored).
As many, especially @Boris, have said, this is the beginning of the season long churn. Iโm no expert on other teams but Gute has always been moving/adding pieces throughout the year and IMO is one of the best GMs at doing it.
Only surprise, and not much of a surprise, is that they didn't keep Taylor. I figured he was a special teams starter and that's important for 3rd string RB.
Jon Ford and Carpenter are not 53-worthy players. They are PS types. OL will go to 10 with Tenuta to IR. Hoping they can find someone better than Newman. They have to find a better safety than Owens.
There aren't many Newman fans but the Packers ended up a little thin at interior offensive linemen. There could be a pickup within the next few days that changes that.

Iโd be astonished if Taylor isnโt on the PS. He was last year to start and was activated quite a bit.

He might have made the team in that role if Wilson hadn't forced the Packers to keep him as the #3 RB. Guys like Taylor aren't hard to find and I wouldn't be surprised if he signed elsewhere.
@PackLandVA posted:Wilson wonโt make the initial 53.
Wilsonโs speed was known prior to the draft.
Fans of particular teams often overvalue said teamโs UDFAs.

Seems like safety is a major problem waiting to happen. Granted, I've paid only half attention to camp, so maybe it's been discussed. But it has seemed an issue that's been quietly ignored. Amos had a poor showing last year, so it made sense that he's gone. But a unit where Darnell Savage is the tenured vet? That's got to be a huge concern, no?
If the Packers are making any waiver claims, I'd expect safety, tight end/H-back, and interior OL to be on the short list.
The Packers are slotted in the 15th spot for waiver claims.
@KenIngalls: The average age of the 53 players who made the initial 2023 Packers roster:

Cutting Taylor a bit surprising, but definitely a PS candidate as I think Wilson just showed too much speed, vision, and cutting ability to let another team nab him. On game day, you'll see Wilson inactive and Taylor will be in there for STs. It gives time to see if Wilson will develop as he is probably more dynamic in case (knock on wood) either Jones or Dillon are out. Wilson could be the heir apparent to Dillon, who's on a prove-it year.
Tenuta will be on IR, perhaps for the entire year. DuBose is probably a PS candidate, but so is Bonds. Moore just never jelled or showed out. Cox is a bit of a surprise on the 53 as he was so up and down, but if he had been cut someone else would have grabbed him up. Sapp will be on the PS.
With all 11 players drafted in 2022 on the roster, all but two of 12 2023 draftees making it, and three UDFAs all making the squad, props to Gute for a couple of good drafts. We'll see how they stack up against other teams but I don't have much of a quibble with the 53 this year.
If the Packers felt Tenuta would be on IR the entire year they could have simply designated him there today instead of cutting Orzech to keep Tenuta on the 53, preserving the right to recall him from IR later in the season.
I read the Packers expect Tenuta to be available in about 4 weeks. And yes, if he were going to miss all of the season (or most) the Packers just IR him today. Then he can't play this year.
Whoops. Did not figure that out about Tenuta and the timing of IR. Thanks.
The interesting thing about Tenuta is that itโs obvious the staff thinks thereโs something there to work with. If he comes off IR and shows well, that could make it easier to move Yosh. The teams that need OL will only increase as the season progresses, given the certainty of roster weaknesses and injury.
I remain skeptical that Wilson would've gotten claimed, but we'll never know. What's clear is the Packers liked him well enough to not even want to take the chance. More than likely the uncertainty over the two starters' future played a significant role in the call.
Sometimes, you have to think a year from now and I think Wilson is that investment. As I said somewhere, Taylor will probably be the callup if he's on the PS and Wilson will develop.
Notice nobody is claiming Patrick Taylor??
That is also playing a part in the decision.
I've said it for years...keeping a lesser player simply because he's a jack-of-all-trades.....master of none, is not the way to build a championship team. Instead....you're building the Vikings & Bears
Every team is releasing a RB like Taylor. He was cut last year and called up from the PS. Wilson was kept because he can actually run the ball. If Jones got hurt, I would not be surprised to see Wilson get more carries than Dillion is he can hang onto the ball.
I expect Love to show more mobility than Rodgers did and that also lessens the value in Packerland of a 3rd RB who's calling card is pass protection.
I find it hard to believe 1265 was seriously in. But Gute always, always, does due diligence
https://www.espn.com/nfl/story...de-colts-sources-say
INDIANAPOLIS -- The Miami Dolphins weren't the only team interested in acquiring Jonathan Taylor from the Indianapolis Colts.
The Green Bay Packers also were in talks with the Colts and had legitimate interest in trading for the star running back, sources told ESPN.
Indianapolis moved forward after its self-imposed deadline of Tuesday at 4 p.m. ET came and went without receiving what the team deemed an acceptable offer for Taylor, who requested a trade last month and was authorized by the Colts last week to seek out a trade partner.
But the Packers emerging as a contender remains relevant because Taylor can still be traded, even though he is on the reserve-physically unable to perform list and therefore must miss at least the first four games of the regular season.
A source told ESPN that there is still trade interest in Taylor and the All-Pro would still welcome a trade. The NFL's trade deadline is Oct. 31.
The Dolphins, sources said, also were in talks with the Colts and discussed several possible deals -- including deals that involved draft picks and players -- but none of those proposals enticed the Colts to act. It remains unclear what the Packers offered or what their level of interest might be moving forward.
The Colts informed Taylor in May that they would not be extending his rookie contract until after the season, the final year of his deal. Upon reporting for training camp, Taylor informed the Colts that he had lingering ankle issues from a January surgery and requested a trade.
Oh that's complete Bullshit.
His agent using the Packers to try and get a deal done. These players/agents have figured out they can use the Packers org as leverage with other teams even if they aren't talking to Green Bay.
If Gutey even asked what they were looking for in trade comp. Colts said they want the moon, Gutey laughed and hung up. That's the extent of their "interest" in Jonathan Taylor
The non-Badger part of X4 would revolt if Gute did this.
