Clay Matthews was taken in the first round of the 2009 NFL draft - 26th overall.  To get there the Packers traded their 2nd round pick (41st overall), and two 3rd round picks (73rd & 83rd overall), to New England.  GB also got a 5th round pick in the deal.  That much I know.  The idea explained at the time was that no one pick will be tied to the TOG trade.

Correct. One of those picks is from the Jets for Favre.

They can try to "frame it" however they want - one of the picks used in the trade for Clay was the pick they got for Favre.

If we are to believe that a GM (Gute) doesn't owe any player (ARod) a heads-up on a draft pick, I must also believe they don't let something like concern over "this is who they got" for the TOG/TOOG trade influence a pick or trade.

That's the kind of stuff that fuels taking heads, insane "sports shows", and now, podcasts, YouTube, etc.

When I think of a "heads-up" discussion between an All-World, yet aging veteran, I imagine Gute saying something like they are looking to draft a QB, that shouldn't be a shock to the player.
Over a 12-15 year period, a vet will be challenged for his job more than once. Yeah, some challenges aren't as realistic as others (nobody was replacing ARod), but if they resent drafting their potential replacement at that point in their career, they are the one being unrealistic.
I also understand a team targeting a specific player, but the draft is so fluid as it unfolds, how can a team tell any player in advance exactly who the team will pick?

I also think the team values the opinions of players like Rodgers, how he would build the roster, his outlook on the future, and so much more. And definitely talk (long) enough to where all involved have a firm understanding of the team's goals.

I'm reminded of a scene in North Dallas Forty when Dabney Coleman is 'teasing' Nick Nolte, telling him they are drafting the guy who is going to take his place.
Nolte replies (paraphrased) that he's not worried... they've been running guys at him for years. (Help me out, Fedya!)

What I never hear anyone say is that of all people AR should understand that eventually a team has to draft a guy to replace you.  He WAS that guy.

AR knows that the NFL is a cold and  hard business sometimes.  And you win by looking towards the future that is how good teams do it.  But, at the same time if Gute or MLF didn't have that conversation with him that this may happen then shame on them.

Anyhow, for all our debate on this subject we just have no freaking clue what was said/not said behind the scenes.  We don't know if Gute is right saying AR didn't answer his phone, we don't know if AR is right saying the team/Gute didn't try to communicate, or if its somewhere in between.

When Rodgers uses the excuse that he has poor reception followed by he only talks to people he likes I think it's obvious. Is the reception actually better when you face time someone, which Rodgers made sound like a sure thing, than calling? I see a lot of holes in Rodgers story, the more he talks the bigger the holes. In the meantime Gutey appears to have taken the high road and moved on. Rodgers has really done his image no favors since the trade.

If youโ€™re the franchise QB for your team, and your job is in limbo during the off-season, and your fancy California house has poor cell reception, then maybe, just maybe, you might want to let your employer know the best way to reach you if something comes up.

Thatโ€™s something that the smartest guy in every room should know.

Speaking of his image does anyone else find it funny that once he got to NY all of the sudden is clean cut and well dressed?  I don't think was an accident.

During his last year or two in GB he dressed like a washed up member of Peaky Blinders who probably smelled like bong water and cheap wine.

Rodgers was going for the "John Wick" look if you remember. Previous year was Nicholas Cage.

Bottom line.....I think it's great the Pack got out from under him & I wish him well.

Go play in NY with that chip on your shoulder young man. Since he's at OTA's and mini camp, the Jets should hit the ground running.

I think it would be great to see them start 7-1 or 8-0. Whip that media into a frenzy about how the Packers "fucked up" by letting him go.

I'm ready to take on all criticism, laughs, etc. It's going to be a fun season.

The Jets first six games are

Buffalo

at Dallas

New England

Kansas City

at Denver

Philadelphia

They could play very well and be lucky to be 3-3. They'll be underdogs in 4 of their first 6 games. If they open up 7-1 or 8-0, they'll have earned it.

The Jets are the Jets for a reason. They ain't no juggernaut from a year ago that just missed gettin to the OWL. Injuries non-withstanding. They are going to be battling the Bills and Phins in the "how far can we whip the fans into a frenzy before we really screw it up dept." , and then still have to get through Cin and the Chefs. Who by the way will be playing in another AFC title game barring a major injury to Burrow or Patrick "Star"

I think, just my humble opinion as a fan, that Rodgers was definitely not caught off guard by anything. If he's as smart as he likes to project, and he has THE elite agent in the game, then at some point they had to look at the numbers and say 1) the QB numbers are going up and Rodgers rate is becoming 2nd tier for his talent and 2) we're coming close to the end of his contract and we need to discuss what the long term plans are. So there's no way they DIDN'T pose the question to GB about whether they were willing to adjust his contract commensurate with his talent and whether his contract would continue past its current length. There's a 0% chance that conversation didn't happen prior to the 2020 draft. Maybe he didn't, but his agent certainly did and I would be willing to wager a lot of money that GB communicated their intentions clearly to his agent. The intention that they won't be extending his contract any further, effectively moving on in 4 years, but depending on performance may be willing to adjust it. And certainly his agent communicated that to Rodgers. So there's an almost 0% chance he was caught off guard by any of these developments. But yes I'm sure when he says GB didn't talk to HIM about it, I think that's true, but there's no way the long term intentions weren't made clear to a proxy. It's Aaron Rodgers word play.

The hypocrisy is that if he had held out publicly or demanded a trade in order to get more money or more guarantees, his answer would be that it's just business. Would he have called Gute personally to talk through the demands and the solutions? Very much doubt it. It's not personal, it's just business. But now when the team makes a purely (maybe) business decision, then suddenly it's personal and he's owed all these personal accommodations.

I watched the Tony Awards, last night. There sat Aaron Rodgers, enjoying the NY festivities. He did not win any awards, last night.

Alright. Itโ€™s 2023. We have evolved significantly in our society. Jokes that would have brought laughs on the Tonight Show 50 years ago no longer fly. We strive to be inclusive and non-judgmental. That all said, did you watch with your husband? ๐Ÿ˜€
