You got nothing on Packer coaches being fired. Sort of like your Super Bowl trophy case.

Firing Dom would be the least surprising development in recent history.  Too bad it's about 3 years too late.

Isn't McCarthy in the last year of his contract? If so, something has to give there as well.  We do not want a lame duck HC as that rarely works out.

The Packers movements of late are very encouraging.  I think the timeframe for Rodgers signing an extension will be a telling part of this story. That collar bone break may just be a blessing in disguise. The terse accounting in the ESPN report of Dom's lack of success in GB is a gem.

How much you wanna bet McCarthy stays in house and goes with Witt as DC?? Seems like something he would do in the name of "continuity".

No, No, No, No.  Whitt is equally deserving to be shown the door.  His group has played poorly and basically looked lost on the field each of the last two seasons.  Also have to wonder how much input he had in the decision making for that personnel-group.  If he had a hand in "we can live without Heyward," "we can live without Hyde," "bringing back House is a good idea" then he should never be allowed anywhere near a professional coaching staff again.

Can't really comment on the young guys like McGarigle and Montgomery, but in terms of "veteran" defensive coaches, about the only one I wouldn't mind having back is Mike Trgovac.

If McCarthy wants to keep "continuity" he'll probably do something even more stupid than just about anybody could possibility anticipate...like maybe making Ron Zook the defensive coordinator and promoting Jason Simmons to be the special teams coordinator.

Might as well have something to put in it. They can dust around it instead of have to dust the whole case.

The Packers' defense will finish outside the top 15 in the league rankings for the sixth time in seven years. If the Packers don't improve from their current 22nd overall defensive ranking after Sunday's finale at Detroit, it will be the fourth time in that stretch in which they've finished in the bottom third of the NFL (including a dead-last ranking in 2011).

Capers hasn't fielded a defense ranked in the top 10 since the Super Bowl season of 2010, when it was fifth.

I’ve defended Capers saying its a talent problem and I still believe that, but a shake up can be a good thing for morale (it was in 2009). I hope McCarthy looks to Fangio instead of internally as I don’t have much faith in the assistants aside from Trgo. TT still needs to upgrade the talent. Still lacking a difference maker at FS, #1 CB, ILB next to Martinez, and a future at pass rusher across from Perry (in that order). Replacing Nick Collins should be the top priority as it hasn’t been done since he was injured.

But they won the Super Bowl back in 2010?

All I got to explain why Dom lasted as long as he did.

Well prayers were answered.  Nothing more needs to be said about Dom, other than this move was 3-4 years too late.  Thanks for 2010.

Really really really hope they do not stay in house for this.  Staying in house is no different than Dom returning.  He's been here too long and worked with these assistants too long for an in-house promotion to result in significant change.  And that's what has to happen for MM to keep his job past 2018.

Interesting take.  There obviously aren't many people defending Dom Capers.

If you believe talent is the problem and not scheme, coaching, etc, I can assume you are in favor of TT being replaced?  I mean, something has to give here.

Not specifically related to your post, but I cringe when Nick Collins is constantly brought up.  It's been 6 years.  Collins was one of the better safeties in the game when he was on the field but some people seem to hold him in such high regards as Ronnie Lott, Ed Reed, Steve Atwater, etc.  He was good, but not that good.

Thank you Football Gods.

I really don't think MM will go in-house. There are simply too many outside options that will exist come tomorrow. I would guess the Bears Vic Fangio is on MM's top of the radar with Greg Williams as option B.

But if MM wants a top flight DC, he's going to have to move fast and the Packers will have to pay up. These guys won't be around long.

Farewell Dom. I'm sure you are an outstanding man. I wish things would have worked out for you in Green Bay, but it didn't. Best wishes wherever life takes you next.

Has to be one or the other.

I couldn't imagine a new coordinator being forced to have the position coaches picked for him, so I think MM would have to agree to let him bring the guys in he wants. Whether that includes anybody currently on staff...who knows?
I don't know that there is anybody we would miss if they are all let go, but I have to trust much better minds than mine to determine these things.

The whole Kaepernick debacle was really my tipping point  with Capers, especially when players came out afterwards & said that they barely prepared for the read option. On top of that he had guys who could not tackle him in the open field, like Eric Walden "spying" Kaepernick on pass plays. It is the Coordinator's job to have his unit prepared for anything the opponent may do, Capers inability to  have his unit prepared was, IMHO, inexcusable.

I don’t think it has to be one or the other. TT has been a consistently good GM that has found lots of talent, but has failed in recent years to give the talent necessary at certain positions. Doesn’t matter how many high picks are given if some or many are bad picks. He should have brought in a veteran Safety if all that was available to replace Collins, Eric Weddle hit FA since Collins went down and is still playing good ball. Casey Hayward and Micah Hyde should not have been sent packing, those were major mistakes. TT has gambled that Whitt could coach up more UDFAs to replace Shields and Tramon instead of keeping proven talent. I don’t think TT has failed overall, but he’s certainly failed his DC. That said, I don’t understand how or why Capers wouldn’t put his foot down and say “I need a veteran Safety or I need a veteran ILB, no more 6th round projects!” That’s a failure on his part and McCarthys part. TT and MM don’t need to be fired, but they need to be honest with themselves and grow. FA is the price paid for drafting poorly, TT needs to pay the price and bring in real veteran help.

So you are advocating for no changes at all in GB other than people need to do better?

That’s not the only thing that should change. I think a shake up in the coordinator can be a good thing for player morale. I think TT especially needs to examine his process and make some changes. His pros outweigh his cons though, he has delivered a lot of talent overall and has kept the team in position to retain a lot of that talent. Even good GMs make mistakes though.

I think I understand.   It is because Dom Capers sucks.

if he were a better coach, he’d get better results

Posting from my iPad because the laptop is rigged to the tv to watch the stream.  Hate not having DVR so I can rewind that “Final Fantasy” commercial

and Dom Capers sucks
