As big a deal as the Patriots made last night, they might be on the verge of having a bigger hole.

According to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network, Wilfork has asked the team for his release, after 10 seasons.

The team approached him once about restructuring his contract, but that didn’t go far. He’s scheduled to make a base salary of $7.5 million this year, and count $11.6 million against the salary cap.

That is a number they don’t want to pay for a 31-year-old coming off an Achilles injury.

How they handle this one will be interesting, because they need that number off the books, but they’d also blow a huge hole (pun absolutely intended) in the middle of their defense by letting him go.

Hmmm......

No such thing as a free meal. You sign Revis at $13 mil per, that money is not available to others. I do like the Revis signing, but not for one year. Renting FA's fails way too often. Lock down corner may be the great exception to that rule. Put them in man coverage and your scheme doesn't really matter.

Hmmm......

How 'bout a straight-up trade - Raji for Wilfork?  VW has 3-4 good years left in him.  They don't make that model anymore.  Shades of Reggie White.

Beef would hit her.
Old friend Rob Demovsky, now with ESPN, reports: "Packers have a visit set up with DT Vance Walker, per his agent. Walker, who played for the Raiders and Falcons, is visiting with (the Chiefs) today."

Walker is 26, 6-2, 295, going into his 6th year. Had 40 tackles and 3 sacks for the Raiders last season. Has 8 sacks over the last 3 seasons.
According to a source with access to NFL salary information, the tight end’s deal includes a $350,000 signing bonus and $800,000 base salary this year, plus a $75,000 workout bonus and weekly 46-man game-day roster bonuses of $12,500 that will pay him $200,000 if he suits up for all 16 games.

Just because I thought a lot of you nuthuggers might want to know.

As you fantasize about the nut slap on your taint.

Quarless surprised the heck out of me last year by looking pretty good. He actually caught the ball and he has quickness. TT is pretty good at targeting TEs, and I'd like to see him go after a possible future starter. Of course that's always the goal, but you know what I mean.

They got Quarless on the cheap, too.

"Andrew Quarless’ two-year contract with the Packers averages $1.5 million and will pay him up $1.425 million this year.

"In 2015, Quarless will make up to $1.575 million: a $1.3 million base salary, a $75,000 workout bonus, and the same $12,500 46-man roster bonuses that will total $200,000 for 16 games."

I'm happy to keep Quarless, which likely means he's the starter next year (forget Owen Daniels coming in now).

I'm a little more concerned about doing something to shore up our safety position, and inside linebacker.

Mike Neal details: 2 years, $8 million

"Outside linebacker Mike Neal will make $8 million in salary and bonuses if he plays in all 16 regular-season games this year and next as part of his new two-year contract with the Green Bay Packers...

"He will count $3.75 million against this year's salary cap and $4.25 million against the 2015 cap."

I feel like TT is excited about giving Hyde a shot and drafting somebody to compete with him. There are probably guys that would fit in FA, but will TT make the move? I'd like it.

EDIT: I checked - there's no strong safety free agents that look worth signing. But Darryl Smith, the great ILB who tore it up in Baltimore last year, is still available.

Sep, I don't want Ted to go nuts spending money recklessly. I think most will agree here on Times Four that he's done a good job of building this team. And for the most part, I am on board with draft and develop. That builds championship teams, and builds them to contend annually. But those two positions got us killed last year, and there have been some viable options to upgrade without breaking the bank, and I wish that Ted would have brought in somebody to help. I'm cognizant of the fact that we still have to pay out some big bucks for Jordy and Randall, et all, but what are the chances we land Smith, or even make a serious run at him?

Lambeau: I have no reason to believe Darryl Smith is even on their radar. But he would be an awesome fit, and he made $1.125 million last year. I also don't want TT spending like crazy. I just want him to patch one hole with one guy. Smith is his best opportunity IMO.

There will be some more cap casualties, so another safety or ilb we haven't thought about might pop loose.  We shall see if any of them are worth considering.

Is it the consensus that we'll be able to keep Cobb and Nelson both? I'd like to keep James Jones, too. Do that, and the offense is looking pretty solid. The oline will be better this year, and the hammer will have a full year under his belt.

Then I stand corrected. Interesting. Haha. To think all these years I've been thinking he was the Free Safety. What a doofus.
