Munchak, Pagano, Caldwell are all retreads IMO. They're the type that will run a good team, have a good regular season, with an early exit from the playoffs. Good coaches, not sure they're SB coaches.

All the other coaches are high risk, high reward. Gase and McDaniels clearly have personality or professionalism issues, which isn't odd for NFL coaches, but there's a risk things could go sour quickly if they don't have their shit together. Both could also get things moving very quickly and we will be right back in the hunt next year. I worry about McDaniels bolting for NE as soon as BB retires also. Campbell and Carmichael are unknowns at this point, but based on things I've read it seems like either would be strong choices. Carmichael seems like the lowest bust risk as he likely will run a good offense and get Aaron Rodgers back on track, while Campbell seems like someone who could really change the culture.

If they were just going to hire a retread - Munchak, Pagano, and Caldwell they'd have been better off keeping McCarthy. The other teams looking for new coaches probably all have McCarthy higher than those three on their lists.

This is not the time for a low risk, boring hire. Rodgers window is closing fast, if not closed completely.

Munchak is a good hire on paper IMO...NFL background, would (theoretically) build a tough OL, well respected around the league. His time in TEN was mostly unsuccessful though. He was saddled with Jake Locker, Matt Hasselbeck, and Ryan Fitzpatrick at QB, not exactly a murderers row of QB talent. If you package him with a great OC then it might work just fine, but the problem is that OC will get plucked and then it's up to Munchak to find another talented OC. Instead of bringing in a CEO type, wouldn't it be better to just hire the talented OC?

Munchak sounds like a great guy and very bright.  And yet in 2012 when his Titans' team came to Lambeau, they were as inept as any team I've ever seen when the Pack beat them 55-7.  That definitely gives you pause, but you never know, maybe having Aaron Rodgers instead of Jake Locker as your QB, things could be much rosier for him here.

Michael Cohen with the Atlantic had a very insightful article on Murphy's previous hiring methods when he was in Colgate.  Some of the hires including the football coach raised questions at the time but in the end proved to be the right decision.

Whoever he picks will be controversial as there is not a consensus candidate. Only time will tell again if he is right.

Makes sense. You only get 4 years, at most, with Rodgers, while you could get a lot longer with Mayfield. Pressure is on the next GB coach to win right now, while Cleveland will be happy just to make the playoffs.

Yup.  Aside from QB, you could make the case that Cleveland's roster is loaded with young talent.  Schlereth even praised Tretter and the interior of the Brown's o-line.  Would have been nice to have Tretter at RG the last two seasons.

Anyone interested enough to see the staff he compiled in Tennessee?  I personally am not but it could be a good indicator of where Munchak would steer this team.

Pretty interesting back story with Munchak in TN. He was offered an extension in January 2014 provided he agreed to fire his OC, DC, OL coach and LB coach. In all there were 6 coaches he was asked to fire before an extension would be offered. He declined and was immediately fired.

His OC was Dowell Loggains (currently OC in Miami who’s boss just got canned). His DC was Jerry Gray who is currently secondary coach in MInny.

Good read here.

Another MM, in more ways than one.  Blind loyalty can be one's downfall.

Was just listening to Cowherd (unfortunately, our local sports radio station replaced the Rich Eisen show with this turd last month) and Mark Schlereth talk about McDaniels.  They were quoting sources close to McDaniels as saying the only job he was really interested in was Cleveland.

Wasn't it recently reported that the reason he had a formal interview scheduled with only the Packers was because that was the only job he would be interested in leaving the Patriots for? So which is it I wonder?

Regrettably, I think the window is likely closed completely.  The talent is horrific.  No chance to compete for it all until the year after next and that might be too late.  Then again, maybe Rodgers is an exception and can play elite level at 38+ years old.

Maybe Rodgers window is starting to close but I I don't think it is closed completely.  I think he can definately be the expection if the GM rebuilds the OL and the other players around him get better.   I personally think if he will be rejuventated by those things and watch and see how good he still is.

I really hope you're right....as he looked pretty bad this year.

I think Rodgers still can lead a team a long ways if you find a way to keep him healthy.  That's easier said than done, but I think he can still do it if he's physically and mentally right.

I remember thinking Favre was done in 2005 after throwing like 28 interceptions that year and the Pack sinking to 4-12.  Okay, he was done winning titles, but did have 2 very good seasons in 2007 and 2009.  I think if you give Rodgers what Favre had in 2007 and 2009, he might take teams of that talent level a step further than Favre did.  That said... surrounding Rodgers with that level of talent won't be easy, the Pack has a long long ways to go to get back to that level.

Nobody's forcing you to listen.

I listen to the classical music station, except when they're having one of their begging drives.

You mean Public/NPR classical station??     Good for you Fedya.

Patriots offensive ranking with McDaniels as OC:
2018 - 5
2017 - 1
2016 - 4
2015 - 6
2014 - 11
2013 - 7
2012 - 1
2008 - 5
2007 - 1
2006 - 11
Average ranking - 5.3

Patriots without McDaniels as OC
2011 - 2
2010 - 8
2009 - 3
Average ranking - 4.3

As with most of BB’s assistants, McDaniels failed when he left NE....and NE didn’t miss a beat over the three years that he was gone.

NE can keep McDaniels as far as I’m concerned....or better yet, Kraft can make McDaniels their new HC and BB can come to Green Bay. He’s the real talent in NE.

I wouldn't argue there's a talent deficit, but I wouldn't say it's impossible to turn things around in a hurry. Philly ran Andy Reid out of town and he got snapped up by the Chefs and took them from 2-14 to 11-5. He had talent to work with, but I'd argue his system was the catalyst in such a quick turnaround.

He had a game managing QB in Alex Smith, Jamaal Charles and a bunch of midrange players that all contributed. Charles was the leader in receptions as well as rushing yards that first year. Reid is great at keeping his system learnable and simple while coaching toward and maxing his players' strengths.

Were the Packers to find the right fit, I really don't believe the offense is that far off. The Oline should be top priority, and fixing the te situation. But we haven't even seen yet what Aaron Jones could do over a whole campaign with consistent work. And I think if they right the wrong of wr coach, this group could be devastating. They go into camp with Adams, Allison, EQ, MVS, Kumerow....the only question mark is finding a slot guy once Cobb is no longer there. Veteran slot guys can be had in free agency. Bottom line to me- if you straighten out the line and come in with a system that plays to the strengths of the talent, I could see Rodgers returning to mvp form. icing on the cake would be Pettine sticking around and building(with a full stock of health) on what was started this year. If they nail this decision, I don't see any reason they couldn't be playoff bound next year. And that's all Rodgers needs is to get in the tournament.

Not sure where to post this, but thought it might add to the conversation.

A close family member of mine lives near and is friends with the Crosby family.  They were invited to Crosby's house on NYE.  Here is an expert from the info my family member got from Mason:

Rodgers concussion:  We only knew that Aaron had a concussion when he decided that he had a concussion.  Statement was given with a wry smile.

Who do you want as a new coach:  Someone with defensive background.  The offense will be fine with AR and whoever the new OC is.

When are you going to throw your first touchdown pass:  We don't even have a play like that in our playbook.  Zook is a smart guy, but we never tried anything different.  The asst special teams coach, Drayton is really good.  Mason hopes he gets the job.

What happened with MM:  After the Seattle NFCC game, he went into a shell.  He surrounded himself with yes men.  He didn't want to try anything knew because he seemed scared to screw up.
