Sounds exactly like the type of coach MLF was looking for.  We will see...

He loses very aggressively.

So I wonder what that means for guys like Jerry Gray and Mike Smith?

Barry just feels like Mike Pettine over again, which LaFleur wanted Pettine when he came aboard. So this is the kind of guy he wants, he doesn’t want a young edgy up and comer like Staley. Not saying that’s what Ejiro was, but I’m sure that guy exists. Feels like he went all-in on Leonhard, Wisconsin outbid us, and then MLF went with his safe/comfortable option. I’m guessing he thinks Barry can utilize the existing talent better, play to the strengths, let these guys eat, and not get in their way. If he can do that then yeah he will at least be as successful as Pettine, which still means we’re in SB contention.

Seems like some of you want there to be melodrama with the front office structure or salary or something that kept quality candidates away, but that’s just so unlikely. It’s a DC gig for a SB contender that has gone 26-6 in two years with the MVP QB, a shut down CB, two really good Safeties, an all pro NT, and an all pro pass rusher. That kind of situation is rarely available. This was a desirable job regardless of nonexistent/perceived organization drama. The fact that we have Barry means MLF WANTS him here, he wasn’t the only guy who would take the job.

Yeah, this take makes no sense at all.  Are you saying us melodramatics  think the past FO buffoonery somehow makes this an undesirable job or that Barry was hired against Mayo's wishes?

That's a pretty stupid take.

If anything, it's the collective stupidity of the hire that I'm interested in.  Who the fuck knows what the organizational structure of this organization is anymore so it's not out of the realm of possibility that Gunt and Dumbshit Sled hill were involved in the decision ALONG with Mayo.

Seriously, does anyone think this is a good hire?

Well, for the first time in forever, fans of the hapless Lions are enjoying themselves recounting how Rod Marinelli's son-in-law Joey Barry was so far in over his head as DC during Detroit's glorious 0-16 run.

Which makes me so glad they hired Barry because if he succeeds then it will be so much more soul crushing for Lions fans. Of course if he fails then Lions fans have something amazing to crow about.

Yes, personality and the ability to motivate appeared to be what MLF felt Pettine lacked and subsequently the qualities he put a premium on. In one of his early season pressers MLF said some thing to the effect "we have some great players on defense, they just have to start playing like it". At the time I think he was referring to Clark & the Smiths. Clark totally turned it around and was almost single-handily the reason for the defenses improvement late in the season. Z. Smith was still good, but had significantly less QB pressures than last year & P. Smith never fully came around to be anything near what he did last season. In the end it appears that MLF felt that a different personality could motivate these guys .... we will see.

There has been speculation here that Leonhard didn’t like the FO structure or Rodgers future or his salary demands weren’t met or that other candidate are turned off by GB for these reasons. The simplest answer is seemingly not satisfactory for some. I don’t think they’re forcing anyone on MLF, I don’t think anyone is saying that and I don’t think they were involved with search in particular. I don’t like the hire either, but I will wait and see I guess because MLF has done a good job both as a coach and with staffing thus far. I don’t know what the thought process is with Barry, but I guarantee Rodgers poured a large Scotch tonight.

Quite simply, it could have been a money grab by Leonhard.  UW is notorious for paying assistants less than market value (relatively speaking) and what better way to leverage his situation than to β€œbolt” for the pros?   In the end, it’s a business decision unless JL was concerned about MLF or the power structure.  Having done org design work all my life I can tell you an astute person would sniff that shit out in 10 seconds.

Here’s what we know - Murphy isn’t a football guy yet holds the #1 chair.  Russ Ball is a bean counter and has a horrible reputation (allegedly) but has a lot of clout as he’s the money guy. Gute seems like a good dude but his influence is limited given Ball and Murphy roles.  Then there’s MLF and I’ll be honest with you - the luster or is is lustre - has faded big time given his decisions in the NFCCG and with the DC position.

The Rams are almost as fucked up as the Packers and I wouldn’t trust Les Snead as far as I could throw him.  For the Packers, they have an arrogance like NASA ala 1985 and the power structure doesn’t help matters.

Joe Barry has been a DC for 4 seasons. Here's the rankings for each of those defenses

https://www.pro-football-refer.../coaches/BarrJo0.htm

2007 Detroit, 32nd in yards, 32nd in points

2008 Detroit, 32nd in yards, 32nd in points

2015 Washington, 28th in yards, 17th in points

2016 Washington, 28th in yards, 19th in points

His WFT defense appeared to be of the bend-but-don't-break variety (better at preventing points than yards), so if the thought of teams gaining yards at will between the 20s against Pettine drove you nuts, this is not a good sign. Those Redskins teams had some good defensive players (Ryan Kerrigan, Preston Smith, Josh Norman, Breeland).

Memo to the Packers

Appoint a VP of football operations to run this team.  Hint - it ain’t Ball.  It could be Gute if Murphy is OK giving up some power but Murphy is a dimwit wannabee owner so I’m sure he’ll fuck this up.  He’s starting to border on Judge Parins ineptitude.

As for the DC - I was no fan of Pettine but what the fuck hire is this?  Do results matter?  If so, this is an awful hire.  If I’m Rodgers, I call the front office today and demand a trade. This move is completely fucked.

I really want to know what Joe Barry says in these interviews. Must be absolutely compelling.

On a serious note, I'm guessing it's not just the buddy hire but also the coveted Staley system or Fangio system.  Maybe Evero didn't get the job because he only had a year experience in the system.  Barry was with the Rams since 2017?  He went with Staley so I'm guessing his experience with Staley sealed the deal.

Now let's see if he can actually pull it off.  I'm curious as to what happens with the position coaches.

My friend played for him at UNLV in 1999, and then worked for him at USC in 2010 as a graduate assistant.

He says he’s a phenomenal teacher, and had jack shit to work with when be was DC at Detroit and Washingron.

I would have liked to see Leonhard, but it is obvious he didnt want to be here.

Hoping for the best with this hire....
