While it does not include games missed by non-starters, it clearly shows the Pack near the top in most games missed, only a couple/few teams were worse off. Put your mouse over each team to see how many games were missed.

Games missed by starters is not the same as number of injuries.

 

It is no surprise the Packers lead the NFL in games missed by starters over the past few years with the way the medical staff clears players to return from injury.

 

The Packers staff has a national reputation as being very conservative with injured players. Chris Mortensen called them the "most conservative, by far".

 

So far their techniques do not seem to be reducing the number of injuries but they do seem to be increasing the number of games missed by starters, which could be detrimental to the success of the team.

The trump card in the injury contest is AR.  None of the teams with more injuries lost their QB for any time.  Still a little surprised IND is up there.

FS, I agree with you.  The staff have decided to take a conservative approach returning guys back to the lineup, so the stat of games missed by starters is biased high.  I wonder if they may even want to be MORE conservative given Hayward's multiple setbacks with his hammy, Perry's performance while injured, etc.  Double-edged sword - can't say which is the best approach.

If the team studied the injury problem as MM has stated and decided that an approach that required greater than average healing and recovery time was something to try, I can fully understand it. 

 

I question whether that strategy is working, making the Packers one of the healthier teams in the NFL. And if it is not working, it becomes detrimental when you consider there are only 16 games to "state your case" as Mike Tomlin says. Missing even one extra game is a big deal.

Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk just tweeted: "Jermichael Finley (neck surgery) just told me his doctor is 99.9 percent certain Finley will be cleared for contact in the next 3-4 weeks."

It's hard to say if Finley was "cautious" when he came back from his meniscus injury. If he was, which many thought he played timidly, and was worried about contact from that, I can't imagine how long it might take to get back on the horse after a neck injury.  

But, would a team's medical staff clear him even if "his" doctor does?

Doctors have different opinions and when it comes to medical clearance, its more expert opinion than fact because most people aren't widgets.

 

Not sure if  the doc who clears him has liability, but the team might if they play him

 

It often comes down to lawyers, guns & money when the schit has hit the fan

 

 

Time to go in a different direction at TE. 

 

Jolly is the guy I want to hear a medical update on.

Finley says he wants GB, but 

 

"“I mean there’s a couple of teams I would love and would be on the first flight out to play with but like I said the Packers are going to come at me with something and I’m going to go to them first and see what they’ve got and if it’s not I would love to be on the first flight out to good old Seattle,” Finley said."

I am a big fan of WZ.  I had seen him in concert many times.  Although maybe a bit strange, his lyrics are very thought provoking and possibly tongue/cheek.  However, he is a refined musician of many talents.  Died way too young.  Cigarettes and other things will do that do you I guess.  RIP WZ.

 

 

 

 

 

I don't know the answer for all of the injuries the Packers have had. I do know that they will not win any playoff games or even make the playoffs if this trend continues.

You've followed GB football the past 5 years, yes?

During his interview with Florio on PFT. Finley said he wants to remain a Packer but added he'd love to be on the first flight to Seattle. Nothing to get worked up over because he'll probably have 5-6 more quotes like that one before he hits free agency. its the offseason with Finley.

 

I do think it's time for GB to wipe the TE slate clean and figure the position out from square one. Rodgers deserves better than Quarless (does certain things well but GB needs a TE capable of Rodgers talent) and I swear I don't ever want to listen to him have to answer another question about how he's getting along with Finley. 

 

Finley never looked the same after the 2010 knee injury. What's he going to look like going across the middle in 2014 if he's cleared? That neck injury messed him up. It would have messed anyone up. 

 

I question whether the GB docs would even clear him to play again. Then it's simple: he's off to Seattle or he rides into the sunset. Since he can be such a head case, I'm okay if he's off to the land of Starbucks, Microsoft and rain.

 

I'm okay with Q. I think he showed he can do some things, and it may be that this year he would be even better now that he's gained some confidence in himself and in his knee. But I wouldn't be unhappy if TT drafts the TE of the future in the later rounds.

I totally disagree on Quarless... I think he's exactly what they need. Tremendous blocker and an improving receiver. He came on in the second half. If you want your new bell cow to have big runs, you keep Quarless...

I like Quarless. Not afraid to put pads on anyone. He's easy to disguise on pass plays on run downs. But he's not a starting TE. If he's starting he's not terribly difficult to account for. A little easier if Jones leaves town. He's a solid guy to have in 2TE sets. He's dangerous in that role and worth keeping for the right contract. 

 

Im Probably asking for too much but AR needs a guy that can challenge safeties like Whitner and Thomas and think their way open through a defense the way Cobb does. As physically gifted as Finley was it was puzzling the guy always seemed to be covered. 

Q is a back up TE.  He's been just as inconsistent as Fin without the tweets.

 

Green Bay should let Fin walk.  He'll never go strong over the middle again. 

What to do with Finley first comes down to a medical question. If the packers medical team clears him then the ball is in Ted's court.

How much does Ted think he is worth, how much does Finley want. It could be a lot of money to sign him that may cost the Packers to let loose some other good players. The again if Finley comes back and plays like he did before his injury he could make the Packers Offence killer next year. Or of course he may never be the same player again. In that case bringing him back would really hurt the packers. The Packers will not want to waist the next several  seasons with Rodgers at his prime.

This maybe the most difficult decision he may has ever made as the Packers GM.

I don't think Finely will get a big contract unless it is incentive laden. He suffered a serious neck injury and there are a lot of big question marks there.
