Vic Fangio and Miami  “part ways” after 1 year and being blown out by KC. Too old? He’s probably headed to Philly.

”Fangio joined the Dolphins in 2023 after the club parted ways with Josh Boyer after three seasons. Miami improved under Fangio, finishing 10th in yards allowed and 22nd in points given up. The Dolphins also finished third in the NFL in sacks (56) and tied for eighth in forced turnovers (27).

Fangio's defense dealt with a litany of injuries…”  NF L.com

My wish list in order of priority.

  1. Aggressive philosophy.    Values getting off the field fast.   Creates a culture of aggression.  (Does MLF want this though?)
  2. Has play calling experience at least at the college level.    Our window has opened prematurely.   No time for someone to learn on the job.  If all goes well, talking heads will be predicting SB run in 2025.
  3. Not super old.   Needs to be able to relate with todays player.

I saw someone suggest the Wolverines DC, Jesse Minter.   I don't know anything about his philosophy but I like the young guy with experience calling plays.   That said, I like Jim Leonhard even more because he has done well with less talent.   Minter has a pretty easy job most weekends with the talent at his disposal.

Whoever the new DC is, he needs to bring nasty to that side of the field. Barry being a “nice guy” directly spilled onto the field as well. They were a passive unit who looked far too flat/uninspired.

I am not endorsing a dirty/head hunting style of D, but these young players need some serious attitude when they go out and play. Basically a punch you in the mouth D followed by another punch to the puss. 💥👊🏻🥊

NY Post on ex NYG/Balt DC Wink Martindale:

”It was a mixed bag this season on defense for Martindale’s unit.

The stats were nothing special – 26th in scoring defense (23.9 points a game), 27th in total yards (361.7), 19th in passing yards (229.3) and 29th in rushing yards (132.4).

Despite heavy blitzing, the Giants totalled only 34 sacks, 29th in the league. A late flurry allowed the Giants to finish tied with the Ravens with an NFL-high 31 takeaways.

“Wink’s been extremely instrumental in my growth as a player, my acclimation coming here as a free agent,’’ linebacker Bobby Okereke said. “He’s just an incredible leader of men, he’s an elite football coach.’’

Snip

NYPost cont.

“There is thought (NYG HC) Daboll at times this season wanted Martindale to pull back a bit on his all-out pressure packages, especially when the defensive backfield was short-handed, as it was in Week 10, when the Giants allowed 640 total yards in a 49-17 loss in Dallas.

Lack of adjustments was cited as a reason why Martindale and John Harbaugh parted ways after four years together with Martindale as the Ravens’ coordinator.

Mix in Daboll axing two trusted Martindale assistants and the plot thickens.

Drew Wilkins has basically been Martindale’s right-hand man the past two years and Martindale has said when he interviewed with Daboll for the defensive coordinator job he said “‘If it doesn’t work out with me, you need to hire this guy. He is a special talent in this league.’’

Nobody is perfect but Wink seems to wear out his welcome. But I’m curious if Drew Wilkins (w/ and his bro Kevin) is another candidate for Packers’ DC.

Whoever it is needs a good scheme and be a great play caller. We need the MLF version of a DC. Minus the crying.

it’s one thing to say you want a tough and aggressive coach but just being aggressive isn’t worth shit if you can’t scheme guys against an elite offense or call the right play in the right situation.

Minter is interesting but if Harbaugh leaves he is candidate to replace him in MI. I also heard Harbaugh wants to bring Minter with him to NFL, further upsetting MI in process.

Sick of hearing about all these gray hairs as options. We need a coach who we’re going to lose because they get a HC offer somewhere, not because they are fired because their D once again became stale.

If Jim Leonhard wasn't a former UW player/coach 90% of this board wouldn't even know who he is.  Perhaps it's by his own choice, but I also don't see Leonhard rumored to be a DC candidate anywhere else, including college.

I like the idea of having a young guy as the DC.  If that's Leonhard, I'm willing to roll with it.  I do think his youth and being a former NFL player would garner credibility with the young guys on defense too.

I want a young DC that meshes well and understands the young 20 something players that gets the most out of each of them.

Is that asking too much?

Who uses the strengths of each player rather than trying to use them against their grain.

Reports from Shefter that there is talk within the organization that are saying Barry, will in  some capacity remain on the defensive staff. WTF

I'd be OK with him as a LB coach. I know one thing, he will never get another NFL DC gig.

One thing's for sure- the SB window with Love is now open and MLF can't afford another mistake.

And if I'm looking for a job as a DC the Packers would be really high on my list. This is a team that's ready to win NOW and they have a 25 year old franchise QB. You could easily get a HC job in three years or less if you are a legit DC.

Not that I want him as DC but that would mean Ron Rivera is available with the Eagles passing on him. I wouldn't hate it but I'd rather go with and up and coming guy like Harris.

I disagree.....he had the Packers job back in 2021 and turned it down because he didn't want to uproot his family. Article posted in this thread from 2021. Was it Yooper?

Yes it was.....

I just don't remember him as having the attacking style that I'd like to see...maybe I'm just mis-remembering Goalline. I love watching defenses that force the other team to make mistakes. I don't remember Wisconsin being that type of team, but maybe I'm wrong.

You're wrong-ish.

His defenses attacked up front, but he did run a lot of zone in the back end because they never had talented enough defensive backs to run much man.

Okay guys, I'm convinced. I've also researched it and you guys are right. Maybe I just took it for granted when he was leading the defense at Wisconsin. I also read where he took a bunch if 2 and 3 star recruits and produced a top 10 National defense.

I'll admit when I was wrong. I'll stick with not wanting a retread though. I think a younger coach will relate better with a younger team. A fresh approach might inject a whole needed excitement in our young players. I hope Lafleur is getting help with the pick.

I like Schumann as an option as well as Leonhard.

Not a bad coach, just a bad DC.

I wonder how our silo is doing with this news? The Bean Counter was probably hoping to get JA on a reduced new deal since he dropped to CB2. Then this happens. Expect Murphy to be spending some extra time on that sledding hill until this blows over.
