Exactly... the 49ers are an emotional team.  That leads to more ups and downs.  The Packers are more about precision and consistency (although hopefully Jolly can bring more emotion to the defense).  Emotion is harder to sustain over time and harder to maintain in the face of declining success.  So the Packers can't fall behind early and if they get ahead they have to beware of a second wind from the 49ers.  If they can do that, precision will win out over emotion and Harbaugh has a stroke on the sideline.

Who is Kaeperdick going to throw to? Vernon Davis sounds like pre-2011 Finley. He lost weight to become a better WR, but it hurt his productivity as a TE. Davis has never been a complete TE, but you can't be a good WR AND a good TE One suffers when you focus on the other. So VD may be a better WR, but their TE position is worse off because of it especially with Delanie Walker gone. And Boldin still has some in the tank, but he's not a #1 anymore. He's a complimentary player. So what's going to happen when Kaeperdick has no one to throw to? His big advantage last season was that teams were afraid of Crabtree and fast TE and it opened running lanes. GB is going to make him beat them through the air...can he do that? I'm not convinced he can with what's around him.

The Packers coaches went back to college to learn how to stop C Kap. and that offense.we will now see if all those hours in class with college coaches will pay off or were they sleeping in class.

any chance the packers can beef up the running game by using an extra OL? visions of ahman green running through defenses with the u-71 come to mind...

otherwise, unless the coaches know something we don't, i don't see the realization of the "Improved running game". Sort of like leaving kuhn as the third down back. That was pitiful last year.

The game, IMHO, will come down to whether our dline gets dominated by their oline like they did in the playoff game. We will defend the option much better (can't be any worse) this time, but it won't matter if we get beat up between the tackles again

I might be alone in saying this, but I'll be pretty disappointed if the Packers don't win this game. We played the 49ers two times last year and were thoroughly embarrassed each time.

Enough is enough. No excuses, man the hell up and play like you're capable of. Make your reads and pound #7 into the ground until he doesn't want to take the ball anymore.

I fully expect the Packers to win. 27-25.

But here's the problem with San Fran -- so much of their success stems from that offensive line and defensive line. And while the Pack should be better prepared (by default) than they were back in January, the Niners still have a big advantage on that line. Our offensive line against that defensive line is not a great match-up for us. And their offensive line had their way with us last year.

For the Pack to win, they'll need Lacy to be effective, Rodgers to throw quickly, and WRs to get open. Defensively, I'm feeling a bit better with their depth on defense, but that o-line and Kaep are tough to hold down. Who knows, but I'd guess 20-13 SF.

Some of you act like the 49ers DLine is some immovable object. Justin Smith showed signs of age last season and Ray McDonald isn't exactly a pass rush dynamo. Beyond that they have ZERO proven depth. In fact, only 1 of their backups provided any sort of tangible productivity last season (Ricky Jean-Francois) and he's not with the team any longer. Their new NT had almost no stats last year, but we're supposed to be afraid of him? The refs are going to be watching Justin Smith like a hawk this season after all those coaches complained about him holding OLinemen, so either he's going to rack up some penalties or he and Aldon Smith going to be far less effective. Their DLine and OLBs still have the advantage over the Packers OLine, but the Packers only gave up 1 sack to the 49ers in the playoffs with Newhouse and Barclay starting...and that sack was to Pat Willis. I think Bahktiari and 2nd year Barclay is a better duo than Newhouse and rookie Barclay.

As far as their OLine vs our DLine/OLBs, that's kind of an unknown right now. We know they rushed for a lot of yards on our D last season, but our D is going to be playing them different. Certainly the Packers had productivity sacking the QB against them, 3 or 4 sacks in 2 games.

Like I said earlier though, these are different teams than last year. We can look at last year and analyze what happened, but I don't think you can necessarily use last season to predict this season because this year is going to be very different. Right now the Packers are a deep team, they got production from all reaches of their bench last season and I don't see any downgrades. The 49ers are talented team up top, but aren't really that deep. It will be an interesting battle, but I think the Packers even keeled approach will serve them better than the 49ers way.

Grave Digger, that's fine for an entire season & I agree with you on that point but we want to win this first game.

I'm with bubbleboy....MAN the "F" UP!!

and for god sakes hang onto the football & execute properly. How about force some turnovers in our favor! In the words of a great 3rd baseman....

Whiners are favored by more than the 3 you get for home and that is fair. Wouldn't spend any money on a bet that didn't give us 5. Want a win, badly. Great spot to be in. Hopeful, eager, wanting it badly. Like I'm in high school again.

Head says Whiners 24-21, heart says Packer. PACKERS. PACKERS!!! 27-20.

This is going to be football in its purest. As Vince said "you have to beat the man in front of you", & this is what this game will come down to. Can our oline give AR, by a semblance of a run game or very good pass blocking, a chance to exploit our advantage in the passing game? Can our front defenders stop Gore from running between the tackles, which sets everything else up for them? IF we can do these 2 things we have an excellent chance, if not the result will be much like it was the last two times we played them.

The refs are going to be watching Justin Smith like a hawk this season after all those coaches complained about him holding OLinemen

Wishful thinking?  Its been his move for a long time and even after a lot of pub early last year for doing this, he never got called for it. NFL more interested in A. Smith getting big sack numbers than they are in making correct calls.

Niners 24

Packers 10

Sorry but I dont see how this team can go and beat the $9ers @ Candlestick.

TT´s plan was to have Bulaga covering AR´s back and hes out for the year. Hope not but I think Backtahri will be welcomed to the NFL by a hungry SF DL.

Dont think there is a lot of difference between the two teams but, opening weekend @SF sound pretty difficult to me!

Niners 24

Packers 10

On what planet do you think the Packer offense will be held to 10 points vs. the "vaunted" Niner defense? Who they scored 22 & 31 against the last 2 times they played

To hold the Packers to 10 would mean Rodgers isn't playing.

Perhaps it is wishful thinking that Smith will get called for holding, but keep this in mind: Aaron Rodgers putting up big numbers is a lot better for the NFL than Aldon Smith getting sacks. The NFL wants to see big passing numbers. Defensive players aren't getting any more breaks. Not expecting Smith to get busted, but I won't be surprised.

Only one DNP at practice today: CB Casey Hayward. He missed the end of training camp / preseason with a hamstring injury

Only one player not practicing? I thought all the injuries in TC was the end for the Packers? Maybe they listened to McGinn and did more tackling the past few days.

Packers 34 - 19. and......... not as close as this score would indicate. The Pack is gonna kill 'em. 49ers will be overconfident and the Packers D will be out for blood and all about proving that Jan. was a fluke.........

this is at least how I hope it works out.....

more realistically(sp?), 27-24 Packers, no, 9ers, no, Packers,,,,,,,,,,,,, no idea, but it will be close.

it will also be one **** of a game! so..... enjoy it and dont put too much value on the first game of the season. we WILL see these SHMUCKS again in the playoffs. that is when it will really count!

ENJOY THE JOURNEY!!!!!!!!!

3, or lose by 3..........

but, I still have the feeling that they win by double digits......

i know, unrealistic, but the feeling is there.

I think it comes from watching the D completely shut down the Seahawks 1's for a half. they did not score after the opening FG until we put our 2's in, and that was with their 1's..

gotta be prety depressing for Carrol and the boys.........

AND, I feel that the Seahawks are better than the 9ers.....

Packers score 10 points with Goldson gone and Culliver on the DL?!?!?!?! Tough opening roadie but don't be that guy. C'mon man.

Good to see Jones and Burnett practicing. Huge year for Burnett to make the jump and fill Nick's loss. Packers need Burnett to let the 10 guys in front of him know to play fearless. He's got everyone's back.

9ers by 13. Would love to eat crow, but I don't think that's gonna happen. The 9ers dominated in both games last year and neither game was really close. They spotted us a pick six in the playoffs to start the scoring and we still got dominated and embarrassed. I get the impression that some folks think if we stop the read option, that we will win. The reality is that they dominated us in Green Bay last year with Alex Smith and no read option. I do think our defense will be better with Jolly and Jones, but Capers seems to find a way to have the defense unprepared for big games often enough. I'm not convinced the OL is any better that last year's mess. If we can get the run and short passing game going, we have a chance, but they have to bring their A game.

Extra stretching.

Hate to nitpick, but the offense did only score 17 points in the playoff game last year. 7 were off of an INT, and then there was a garbage time TD with 1:07 left (drive started with 3:29 left after SF's last TD) when they were down by 21 points and the 49ers called the dogs off. And in the first game, the offense put up 15 (Cobb had a punt return). With that said, I have no doubt that they will put up more than 17 next Sunday.

ST's & defense are part of the game last I checked.

Even so, the Packer offense still scored more than 10.

If anyone wants to step to the plate & place a small (or large) wager ONLY the Packer offense scores 10 or less, I'm all ears. Defensive & ST's scores wouldn't count for this wager.

I'm seeing a lot of the defeatist attitude for a team that has won 41 NFL games (including playoffs) over the last 3 years. We're not the Jets or Raiders here.

While the 49'ers are a good football team, they are NOT the 70's Steelers & the Packers are not a 4-12 football team.

As long as the Packers stay healthy, nobody wants to play them & I assure you nobody is penciling a win over them.

Until the Packers beat them, or "Man the F- up!" or kick them in the balls or at least play a competitive game, the Pack are the 49ers btches.  AND I HATE SAYIN" THIS!!!!

Still, I have some hope.
