More mind games.

Reporters that cover the 49ers had a chance to ask Mike McCarthy a few questions today

Q: Can Scott (Tolzien) provide any assistance leading up to this game for your defense?
McCarthy: I’m sure Scott and the players are having conversations in the locker room. We tend to leave that room to the players. I’m sure there’s insight there.

Q: But he doesn’t provide anything to the coaching staff?
McCarthy: Well, it’s important for any player who comes to the Packers to meet all the coaches, so I’m confident Scott has met all of our coaches.

What is this "Team 93" being spoken of?!?!?

Morgan Burnett explains.

Love it!

I would rather have them speak with awesome play on the field of battle.  Anything less is blah, blah, blah...   Walk the talk!

CMIII is in his head.

San Francisco coach Jim Harbaugh didn’t take kindly to comments earlier this week made by Packers linebacker Clay Matthews, who said one way to stop the read-option offense is to hit quarterback Colin Kaepernick more often.

Harbaugh said Wednesday that Matthews’ “tough talk” about stopping Kaepernick sounds a lot like “targeting a specific player.” Harbaugh said he’s talked to the NFL office about what is and isn’t legal when hitting quarterbacks in the read option.

Clay said in that same interview that they've been talking to the officials all TC and preseason about what is and isn't legal when the QB does the read option.  Whiny Jim cracks me up.

Ahhhh YES!!!

IT'S FOOTBALL SEASON PEOPLE!!

I love all this.  MM's comments were fantastic.  The team is lathered up, the idots are being idots.

F the 49ers!!

This is fun!   and couldn't have come soon enough!

I think it's interesting how much emphasis the Packers put on athleticism on defense this off season.  They didn't take the route that they were pushed around last year and needed to get stronger.  They took the tact that the players weren't able to get where they needed to be or couldn't finish.

Just look at the Datone Jones pick, the re-signing of Brad Jones, the release of Bishop and Woodson, and the way Hawk showed up leaner this season.  Only concern for me is how that translates against a power RB like Peterson or Lynch.

Capers was quiet and deliberate this off season, but they've reformulated the defense to address the areas SF exposed. They also devoted a lot of roster resources for that side of the ball.

I think this season will end up a much better evaluation of Capers based on the talent on the roster.  There were a lot of snaps last year devoted to gaining NFL experience for the young guys.

It's also worth remembering that the defense has been on a bit of a rebuild the last few years and they're just starting to reach the point where they should start to click.  Training a new starting safety takes time (just like a QB on offense).  It takes even longer when he's not playing with a vet to mentor him.  Health willing, Burnett is reaching his full potential this year and can begin passing on knowledge to the younger guys.

I also think it's important to remember that the defense was improving last year over the course of the season.  The Packers are very young on D still but they should improve further still over the course of this season.

Last thing is Johnny Jolly has an infectious love of football.  Defense needs to be played with emotion and everyone around him knows he gives everything he has to the cause.  That raises the level of the whole in a real way.

That's a good point

When they played SF in the playoffs they didn't have or didn't play Jolly or D Jones or Perry or McMillan or Hyde.   Those guys are all very athletic or better athletes than the guys they replaced and that can only help them against a team like the Niners that runs the read option

The other thing I think about is SF doesn't have Crabtree or Walker or Manningham on offense like they did in the playoffs.

We can analyze this game to death but at the end of the day, it's just one game.  Somebody has to start the season 0-1.  Might be SF, might be GB.  Both teams will be there at the end of the year regardless of the outcome.

I'm a bit concerned with a few things, namely:

- Refs tossing out Roughing The Passer flags for hits on Kaep.

- Bacteria's ability to hold up against a great front seven.

In favorable light for GB, I think:

- Hyde will continue to make some things happen on the field.

- Finley will have a big day.

- Ross will redeem himself from last year's debacle.

Should be a great game... Godammit people, football is back!!!!!!

Yeah, it's one game, but to me it's a big one game.  This game will provide a sense as to where the Packers are and since I live in enemy territory, a win will empower me to  dish out a little payback!

That's good. Leavy is a pro, he won't put up with any antics.

I anticipate the refs will be fully briefed on shots to the QB. There will definitely be some close calls, but I anticipate the NFL will favor allowing the QB to be hit. Besides, running QBs don't accumulate the passing numbers the NFL wants to see.

Following are the highlights from Green Bay Packers coach Mike McCarthy's post-practice press conference on Thursday:

Injury report

Cornerback Jarrett Bush (ankle) limited, cornerback Casey Hayward (hamstring) out.

How does Jarrett Bush seem with the ankle injury?

“Talked to him after practice, he has a post practice routine. He looks good. I’m confident he’ll progress throughout the week.”

What’s his importance to special teams?

“Bush is special teams captain, so that’s how we view him. He sets the tempo for us.”

How does wide receiver Jordy Nelson look coming off knee surgery?

“Jordy looks good, looks like he’s back to himself. He’s had a couple weeks to get ready for this.”

49ers coach Jim Harbaugh talked extensively about rules regarding hitting quarterbacks on the read option. What’s your understanding of the rules regarding hits on read option?

“We feel we have a strong understanding of how we’re going to approach the game.”

Can you hit a quarterback if he’s carrying out a fake?

“The quarterback is part of the read option. There are three elements, the handoff, the keeper and the pitch. The ability to go tackle that player is obviously within the rules."

Is Seneca Wallace getting more snaps than usual at backup quarterback?

“No, our operation for distribution is the same. We’re doing more things post- and pre-practice than normal (for Wallace)."

Does tight end Andrew Quarless take on greater run blocking role with Matthew Mulligan and D.J. Williams cut?

“We have four tight ends. I think it’s important for Andrew to get back out there and get going. He looks great and he’s healthy (from his quadriceps injury). We’ll see how it plays out.”

The game could very well be the tie breaker as to who hosts the NFC Championship Game.  I know last year some thought the Packers were better suited to play in warm weather or indoors rather in snowy Green Bay. I say the hell with that, win this game and hopefully make everyone march thru Lambeau in January.

Cant blame the ESPN panel for picking the niners across the board. GB **** the bed the last 2 times they faced each other and were completely dominated physically in the trenches. GB has to prove them wrong as we are the underdog at this point. The wild card is that #12 is the best player in the league IMO. He will need to have a great game to make up for some other deficiencies.

Tyler Dunne also picked the Packers. Looking at the game objectively without the use of  it's hard not to go with the Niners. The last playoff game created a perception that the Packers must overcome and the opportunity is there Sunday.

Stop with the 'looking at the game objectively' BS - you're either a fan or you're objective - you're not both.  They're mutually exclusive.

I heard that on the Dunne/McGinn podcast.  Boy those two are hard to listen to - moreso McGinn.  It's like listening to an old drunk uncle talk football.  I know the guy is very "football knowledgeable" but he's a clear example of why certain reporters never end up on air.

Morgan Burnett is a very big key to this game & our defense.

He needs to be out there.

goddamnit. Can we....JUST ONCE have a chance to play these guys with our preferred starters. I guess not...

Packers coach Mike McCarthy spoke to the media after Friday’s final practice before Sunday’s regular-season opener against San Francisco:

*Morgan Burnett, hamstring, DNP, questionable. Jarrett Bush, limited, probable. Casey Hayward, hamstring, out. Brad Jones, hamstring, limited, questionable.

*Morgan Burnett and Brad Jones both came into today with some hamstring soreness. They both had their hamstrings injured, so we’ll see how it goes. We’ll be smart with those guys. Forty-eight hours, it’s important to get those guys ready to play the game. Hopefully, it’s nothing more than that.

*This is really the feedback from our doctors and the player.

*M.D. and Jerron have taken a lot of reps, a lot of football throughout the preseason. We’re confident we have a number of different personnel groups so we’re ready to go.

*Inside linebackers – I’d say they’re definitely one of the best. They’re very similar. Look alike very instinctive. They play a lot of match coverage, particularly in matching up with running backs and tight ends. Both excellent tacklers and pressure players.

*We really liked Eric Reid coming out. He has great range. Good football player.

*Robert Francois has really grown in pretty much every aspect of his professional being. What he’s done with his body. The opportunity to focus on one position has really helped him. He’s done a very good job on special teams. He’s smart, tough, love having him on our team.

*No. 2 quarterback that’s a big part of his role on Sunday’s is to be an extra set of eyes. He has the play in the game like each and every snap he was in there. When Aaron does come to the sideline, he’s has input of what’s going on. With someone who has as much experience as Seneca, it helps.

*Obviously with David is he’s played every snap of the preseason. What he’s been able to do on film. David is playing against a premier player in Aldon Smith. Once again, it’s a team game. He has to do his role and play his position.

*He’s picked the scheme up seamlessly. It’s something he’s done in college. There haven’t been too many practices where you didn’t feel good at No. 33.

*Marshall Newhouse, as I’ve stated, I view him as a starter. He may or may not play in the game. As far as scenarios, that’s why you play the game.

*Will the defenses catch up to the scheme? They’ll have more time to prepare for it. That’s a credit to the offense. They’re really two different topics. I think Kaepernick, RG III and Wilson will all be great QBs in this league. Everybody has been preparing for it. That’s the beauty of Sundays.
