I remember when the fan tossed the sign at Bennett.....and you know what happened.

Sorry Roberto, the NEW hands of stone.

This thread is hilarious.  You'd think the guy pissed on the Lombardi statue.

I see nothing wrong with him choosing to retire and make it public.  He doesn't owe **** to the NFL or the Packers.  If it was in the Packers best interest to cut him tomorrow and break the contract, they would do so without an ounce of remorse.  He has the same right.

I think everyone would have cut Bennett a lot more slack had he been living up to expectations, but save for a game or 2 he really hasn't.   There was already a sour beginning to his career in GB and deciding to announce his future retirement mid-season just sort of adds to the sourness of it.

I think most fans will forget all about it if he goes out and kicks butt these last 9 games, but so far he's been among the more disappointing FA signings the Pack has had since maybe Joe Johnson in the early 2000s.  There's still time for him to go out strong as a Packer, but so far his performance overall has been underwhelming.

Either cut him now or make his next game his last if he doesn't produce and show a willingness to try. He hasn't added a lot, except maybe some blocking, and his announcement now just adds a distraction this team doesn't need. Give Kendricks a bigger role, and RR might not be able to block but at least he can catch a ball thrown at him.

Bennett hasn't been that bad.  He has 4 fewer catches and 28 fewer yards than Cobb, and 2 fewer catches and 70 fewer yards than Jordy.  The drops were tough and the lack of TDs is concerning, but what was everyone expecting from him?  I mean did you really expect him to be more productive than Cobb and/or Jordy?  MM has never emphasized the TE and in this offense, Bennett is fitting in exactly where we all expected: as the 4th leading receiver.

I don't think it's where he's at, it's how he got there.  It's the drops.  Everyone knows what he is capable of as a receiver because we've seen it in previous highlights and glimpses of it in preseason and this year.  Just wildly inconsistent catching/not catching the ball.  One may guess a lack of focus.

If by lack of focus you mean already thinking about retirement, I agree. Though, he does not have as many drops as fans believe, they just seem to happen at the most inopportune time.

I wonder how Bennett so far compares to Cook's first 7 games of '16?

Cook - 31 receptions (8th in NFL), 373 yds (6th in NFL), 1 TD (tied with others for 27th in NFL)

Bennett - 24 receptions (15th in NFL), 233 yds (19th in NFL), 0 TD (tied with others for 51st in NFL)

To me, when healthy Cook was a better fit in 2016 and now as he had a level of explosiveness to get downfield that Bennett doesn't currently have.   That said, Cook had a hard time staying healthy when he was here and occasionally he had the dropsies as well.  I would have rather had a healthy Cook, but I can see why the Pack may have been gun shy on Cook as he did miss a good bit of time last year and he would sometimes drop a pass or 2 as well.

My hope with Bennett would have been for more reliability and consistency even though he was less explosive than Cook.  He's been reliable in that he's been available and not hurt, but those dropped passes have made me leery of whether he'll catch a ball in a critical situation.   So far he's been a disappointment, but I'd have to say that at this point last year Cook looked like a disappointment as well mostly due to injury.

Anyone notice that Martellus Bennett did not practice today with an "undisclosed" injury?

I can certainly understand the logic that if I was looking forward to retirement I would not be putting my body on the line any more than I have to.
