It’s an illusion that at one point Baylor was +10 or +12 in FT attempts?  It evened out in the second half but the Zags couldn’t take care of the ball and couldn’t control the glass.  Not to mention that they really aren’t a 3pt team so once they got down double digits they were ill equipped to come back.

The difference in athleticism and energy was striking.   In fact, other than Suggs and maybe Timme there isn’t another Zags player that would start for Baylor.  Top to bottom Baylor was a better team and credit to them they took it to Gonzaga and played tough and fast and aggressive.

I may have misread that- Gonzaga was ahead in FT attempts. That’s what the illusion was.

@BillHefnerV:  Lincoln Riley USC contract details (not confirmed; best I could do):
- $110 million
- USC buying both his homes in Norman for $500,000 over asking ($1 million bonus)
- Buying a $6 million home in LA for him
- Unlimited use of the private jet 24/7 for family

I mean, it's ridiculous, but it's still better than MSU giving Mel Tucker 95 million. MSU is in debt up to its ears over the Nassar scandal and making cuts left and right because of that but they get two donors to pay a guy that just got blown out by a team that won't even be in the college football playoff.

Brian Kelly now rumored to be on LSU's wish list. LSU and Oklahoma having openings is going to drive salaries up even more.

My brother in law read that USC is also contributing 4.5 million towards his 10 million buyout from OU.

also Notre Dame just came open.  Kelly to LSU

Lincoln Riley isn’t half the coach that Saban is and honestly he’s not close to Urban Meyer either.  But U$C is so desperate they made the Mel Tucker contract look reasonable.

What I don’t get is why Dave Aranda didn’t get offered L$U gig.  Brian Kelly is arguably the most overrated coach in college football.

Curious now who goes for ND position.

If I’m Jim Leonhard, that might be the right fit.  Since Wisconsin is too arrogant and too stupid to fire Chryst there’s no reason for JL to stay.  Or he could look at OU.

The money that Brian Kelly must have gotten in LSU must be staggering. Why would you leave Notre Dame where he's made the BCS playoffs multiple times to go to a school that just fired a guy (Orgeron) who didn't win enough games to keep his job less than TWO YEARS after he won a national title. Orgeron's LSU team finished up 15-0 by beating Clemson in the title game on January 13, 2020.

TWO YEARS!

Orgeron had basically one full season after that (2020 was obviously a wacky year for many programs because of COVID). If Kelly doesn't win immediately are they going to fire him and look for the next guy?

Alabama, Georgia, Oklahoma, LSU, Texas, Texas A&M, Auburn, and Florida are all in the SEC and all of them consider anything less than winning the national title a failed season.

Word on all counts. Especially about Kelly. One of the biggest douches I’ve seen in well over 50 years of watching football.

Orgerons issues also was stuff going on outside football. He was hitting on the wife of oen of LSU executives who told Oregeron she was married and prenant but he said he didnt care, Boosters, getting pictures taking in bed with a woman not his wife and picture going viral, not interviewing coordinators hired and then having to fire them. He was a mess after the championship. He let all the glory go to his head.

Goalline not saying they coached themselves.

Obviously Dave Aranda is pretty damn good and so is/was Joe Brady.

Just not sure Eddie O is very bright nor should he take credit for their success.

Let’s also not forget Les Miles had a better winning percentage than Nick Saban at L$U, and it’s not like the Mad Hatter had a bunch of success at OSU or Kansas.

The 2019 LSU team might have been one of the most talented 5 teams in history. They might be the most talented offensive team in history. They had Joe Burrow throwing to Justin Jefferson and JaMarr Chasse and handing off to Edwards-Hellaire (all first round picks and Jefferson and Chasse are arguably both in the top 5 WRs in the NFL). The OL had at least 3 future NFL starters on it.

That team has already had 21 guys play in the NFL and they'll be more that get drafted this year (Stingley, Jr. is a top 10 pick this year). Assuming he stays where he's in the mocks. that's at least 7 first-round picks, 4 2nd-round, and 7 more 3rd and 4th round picks on that team.

What’s crazy is Devin White was the 5th overall pick in 2019 and is probably a top 5 player at his position in the league and wasn’t even part of that 2019 winning NC team.

Much like O$U, L$U has produced a laundry list of dominant WRs and DBs.   Like Alabama, Florida, Ohio State, and even U$C and F$U with the right coach you can compare year in and year out for the playoffs and national titles because of their ability to draw top recruits.

Kelly started as a D2 coach at the university (GVSU) 15 miles from where I live. He started as a graduate assistant there in 1987 and eventually became the head coach and won two D2 national titles.  He was beloved there and still actively donates to the school. Nobody begrudged him taking his first D1 job at Central Michigan. But he became a douchebag after that.

I have a close colleague who played for him at Central Michigan. He says he was outstanding as a coach, but when the time came for him to leave for Cincinnati they got a message that they would have a team meeting at 7 AM the next morning. He said Coach Kelly showed up with a tie that had Cincinnati Bearcats colors on it (the players had no advance warning) and told them it was nice knowing them, but he was off the next challenge and wished them luck. None of them ever heard from him again. It was literally the same thing he did at Notre Dame.

At the highest level, college athletics can create and embrace the scumbag element if you can win and compete amongst the best.

Look no further than Urban Meyer, Art Briles, Bobby Petrino, Jim Tressel, Joe Paterno, Bobby Bowden and yes, Brian Kelly.

And looking a little closer to home...

And, let's just say Barry Alvarez was not a saint.

Yes. When he moved up to D1, he changed a lot, at least outwardly.  This story is from when he had already moved up to D1 in the MAC, started having success at CMU, and was starting to get interest from Power 5 schools for openings.

He may have always had douchebag tendencies, but in the low-pressure D2 environment he manifested a very different personality. Back then, GVSU football games were over by halftime (his final year there GVSU won by an average score of 58-12) and he helped put the school on the map in the state of Michigan. It is a school in the middle of some fields and the first time most people heard of it was because of the football team. When he started there in the late 80s, enrollment was around 8,000.  It's now 25,000.  Obviously, he was just a part of that growth, but the focus of GVSU to become a powerhouse D2 school for athletics to get attention to increase enrollment really began with the football team. His last 3 years there, GVSU went 41-2, won two D2 national titles, and was the runner-up the other year. The indoor track and football facility (as good as any D2 school and better than anything in the MAC) is named after him. He still comes back to campus regularly and remains very well-liked in Allendale (unlike at Mt. Pleasant (CMU), Cincinnati, or Notre Dame).

The guy has won everywhere he's been at every level, and you can't blame him for chasing the money (and D1 titles), but he changed from being the small-time college coach that seemed happy and fulfilled at GVSU (for 13 years) to a douchebag. Of course, going from making about 150K to 10 million a year is too hard to resist for almost anyone, but when he finally retires, it will probably be back in Western Michigan.

Here's a 20 year old quote that looks like complete BS at this point, but was at a time when he was turning down other jobs to stay at GVSU (he finally left two years later).

A few years before that, Kelly was coaching Division II Grand Valley State. He had built the Lakers into an absolute juggernaut, and in 2001, he told me this:

β€œI didn’t come to Grand Valley thinking I was going to end my career here in coaching. I thought this was one of the stops along the way. But I found a diamond in the rough. I have what I consider the finest job in college football. I have the opportunity to compete for national championships and not have the trappings of the Division I arena, the incredible pressure to win at all costs. I have absolutely found the job I want.”
