With Pettine (who McCarthy hired) moving on and Kevin King and Montravious Adams hopefully to depart this offseason I believe that every last remnant of the Ted Thompson-Mike McCarthy era defenses is now gone (save for Kenny Clark who we will allow to stay).

Amazing given how much draft capital was put into the defensive side of the ball between 2012-2077 and how little GB got in return for its investments.

Do you still obsess about Bart Starr's tenure as GM?

Yeah, another division title. But it makes the road to the SB tougher.

Rams going all in for 2021 after Tampa Bay went all in in 2020.

Gotta figure the 49ers are going to make a move at QB with all the talent on that team outside of the QB.

Seattle already blew through its draft capital to get Jamal Adams and appears to have peaked.

New Orleans should take a step back with Brees likely going and their dire cap situation, so the Bucs, Rams, and (if they get another QB) 49ers look like the early top candidates besides the Pack to be the NFC SB representative in 2021.

The good news is that (barring catastrophic injuries) it should be yet another cakewalk in the NFC North for the Pack with a new (meathead?) coach and Goff at QB in Detroit, Nagy on his last legs and Foles the only QB under contract in Chicago, and Kirk, Zim, and Spielman guaranteeing another a low ceiling in Minnesota.

Considering the success of the Rams/Brandon Staley unconventional coverage first, front second Fangio-style scheme, I would imagine that’s the thought process. Jaire will be the centerpiece of this defense.

Interesting is the age group MLF is looking at. Richard (41), Evero (39), and Harris (38) are young and not yet retreads. Barry would be a disappointing pick, he’s certainly a retread. If Chris Harris brings that mid/late-2000’s Bears defense attitude to our defense that would be fun. Always thought he was a good player and certainly always seemed to make some big plays.

I'd like to see a DC with some new ideas rather than an older re-tread.  Dom and Pettine qualify for the latter, as they didn't really bring anything new to the defense.  It was kind of same old, same old.  Not that there are any new crazy defensive schemes but I'd like to see someone more flexible, that bases the defense around what we have, not what we should have.  Base this defense around a great CB, DT and edge rushers.  You have 4 pro bowl caliber guys (Alexander, Smith, Clark and Amos) and at least 2 guys who look to be on their way (Gary and Savage).  I just don't see how you can't put together a very good defense with 6 guys like that.

"Great" Edge rushers? Maybe in 2019 when both Z and Preston were in the top ten for "percentage of one-on-ones won in pass rush", which was a big reason we were 8th as a team . This year? Neither were in the top 10 and we were 22nd. As I've posted before, for all this "great talent" people see in our defense, how many of our defenders would start for TB? Let me answer .... 3 ... Alexander, Clark, and one of our safeties. Now maybe a new DC can elevate individual players, but I just don't see talent better than their #9 ranking this year. Now if Smiths were to play like they did in 2019, Clark stay healthy, continued improvement from our young ILBers, and upgrades for King & Sullivan, now you have something.

It’s a matter of dollars as well as sense.

Preston Smith is not a good value at 16MM per season.  He became expendable the minute the season ended.  You cut him and immediately pick up 8MM in cap room.  Seems like a no brainer to me.

Speaking of which, you know what 8MM can get you?   Yes he’s a bit of a dirt bag but N Suh.   1 year, 8MM with the Bucs.  And they are still playing.

Levonte David and Shaq Barrett are also both free agents after this season.  Might want to make a couple of phone calls to them.

I agree there are times when guys like Smiths, Amos, Savage, basically anyone other than Jaire don’t look elite, BUT there are a lot of times when all of them do look elite. The issues facing the D this time around are not skill related, it’s keeping that consistency snap to snap and game to game. A better DC could get an elite defense out of our starting 11 no doubt in my mind. Another Pettine probably couldn’t or wouldn’t unlock that elite consistency.

I think the consistency you speak of would be more about "execution", assignment, reads, etc. In that regard Alexander,  Amos, & Savage had their best seasons. The two players who really took a step in the wrong direction were the Smiths. Combined they had 9 less sacks and 26 less QB hits compared to last year. With them it is all about physically winning their match up. Same coach, same scheme, they just didn't do it at nearly the rate they had the year before and in reality they both fell back to their production in their "pre- Packer" careers. So does Pettine get no credit for them having last season be the best year's of their career? Or is he blamed , and we can say a "better" DC would have gotten them to play better this year? New guy, different energy, will it result in a big difference?

I think, at least with the Smiths, they caught the league off guard in 2019. That said, Z’s 2020 was still really good:

β€œOver 16 games, Smith tallied 12.5 sacks, 23 quarterback hits, 12 tackles for losses, four forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries in 2020. He was tied for fourth in the NFL in sacks, 10th in quarterback hits and tied for third in forced fumbles.

Smith joined Aaron Donald of the Los Angeles Rams as the only players with at least 10 sacks, 20 quarterback hits and four forced fumbles in the NFL this season.”

Preston’s season was a little hard to figure out, but what’s clear is that when he’s on he’s one of the best edge players in the league. Both of them are. Preston had a slightly different role compared to 2019 with more coverage, but it seemed more like an energy/effort issue. A more rah rah vocal DC might be able to get the Preston Smith we want more often.

Regarding overpaying QB....

People don't realize how fortunate we are to have someone like #12...he's never had a bad year. Franchises will splash big money on turds like Goff, or Cuzzins, or Dak and it will come back and bite them in the ass.

I certainly don't know if the rumors are true that Gutey wants to move on from #12 and make Love the starter as soon as it's cap-friendly, but if true, the guy should be fired on the spot.

Unlike the Bert situation, #12 needs to play as long as his skillset allows, and Gutey needs to stop focusing on who his heir will be and start focusing on building a better team around him to support him.

#12 has been the consummate pro...he came in and adapted to the offense. Unlike Bert who was always going to be Bert, wasn't going to take to coaching, and was going to do it his way.

Yeah, so we can fire him as soon as 12 Is done and we have no QB waiting to take over. Let the fans decide the roster and he will soon join us on the sidelines.
