Vic Fangio or Gus Bradley. It should be one of those two guys. Mike needs to do everything he possibly can to get one of them here in Green Bay. Both are available, and they're clearly the best candidates. It really shouldn't be hard to convince a top candidate to come to GB. They only need an average defense to compete for another Lombardi. It's going to come down to whether or not one of these top guys wants to work for Mike McCarthy. Hope one does.

Pettine is the closest thing you'll find to Buddy Ryan - minus the theatrics. Very aggressive play-caller who'd add much-needed toughness to the defense. Might actually prefer him to Fangio. Doesn't have the track record but would bring a different style and personality.

The Packers are interviewing Mike Pettine for their DC job tomorrow, per @AdamSchefter. Pettine was a DC from 2009-2013 and his defenses ranked 1st, 5th, 2nd, 9th, and 4th in DVOA and never ranked lower than 6th in passing.

lots not start using this kind of advance statistical gobblygook to judge a DC.

Does he have a toupee?

He is comfortable with his masculinity.

Hmm...didn't realize there was a connection:

He took last year off to build his own house.

With Fangio, Pagano, Spagnola and Pettine out there yet, the Packers can get an experienced DC. I wouldn't call any of them a retread.

New GM Brian Gutekunst on improving the Packers defense: "We've got some good players; we didn't play well as a team. The team has to be greater than the parts."

Well, that's the attitude I like from a GM about a D and even a team. Lay it on the coaches to mold them into a team and as I said earlier in a thread, the parts were greater than the whole on our D. A good DC can turn that around.

Pettine's defensive schemes

Some good stuff in this link.

Mike Pettine has promised Browns fans that he will adapt his defensive scheme to fit what his players do well. He did just that in Buffalo in 2013.

No square peg/round whole.

This almost sounds like Perry and Matthews.

At one "outside linebacker" spot, the Bills started former #1 overall pick Mario Williams. In my opinion he is the one kind of guy that we just don't have. Paul Kruger and Jabaal Sheard probably come closest, but Brown matches Williams' blend of power, edge rushing skill, speed, and size. Williams was effectively a fourth down lineman who sometimes played from a 2 point stance.

At the other outside linebacker spot, the Bills started yet another former first rounder in Manny Lawson. Lawson has been a journeyman and never lived up to his billing as a top-flight pass rusher out of NC State.

If you haven't done so I would recommend watching the Press Conference with Murphy introducing Gutekunst. Long.....but Good stuff. Guy is impressive.

I thought Gut was impressive as well.

Then again, considering the previous GM has not formed a coherent sentence and has had spittle coming out of the sides of his gaping mouth whenever he's spoken for years now, maybe I just had really low expectations.
