lots not start using this kind of advance statistical gobblygook to judge a DC.

Does he have a toupee?

The only stat that matters: scoring. Pettine's defenses have gone:

2009: 1 (NYJ)

2010: 6 (NYJ)

2011: 20 (NYJ)

2012: 20 (NYJ)

2013: 20 (BUF)

2014: 9 (CLE)

2015: 29 (CLE)

Average Ranking of 15.

Dom Capers average ranking in scoring since 2009? 15. I guess you're immune to such gobbledygook though.

Vic Fangio's scoring record (over the same time period):

  • 2017: 9 (CHI)
  • 2016: 24 (CHI)
  • 2015: 20 (CHI)
  • 2014: 10 (SF)
  • 2013: 3 (SF)
  • 2012: 2 (SF)
  • 2011: 2 (SF)
  • 2010: 30 (Stanford) (top 25% of NCAA)

Average NFL ranking: 10

Couple blips in a the record on a rebuilding Chicago team, but overall he has killed it everywhere he's gone this decade. If it makes you feel better Bong, Fangio had a terrible scoring average when he was paired with Dom in Houston and the last couple years in Carolina. Dom was dragging him down apparently.

Just about sprayed my coffee all over my computer, EL-KA-BONG! Does he have a toupee? LMAO!

I honestly don't give a $#!T who is the DC. I don't give a **** what their previous "rankings" were. I want 3 things to happen, whoever it is

  • Players listen to the DC
  • Players learn from the DC
  • Players play hard for the DC

If we get that, we will be a contender, I promise you.

You forgot execution boss. None of that means anything if you're not doing your job. That's been our biggest issue, 3/4 of our DBs don't execute, our pass rush doesn't win 1on1's when needed, and our 2/3 of our ILBs are in the wrong place at the wrong time. Improve the position coaches and improve fundamentals.

I'm not saying Fangio wouldn't be an upgrade, just that he had some great players to use to get those rankings.  Bears D this year was good--I don't know enough about their talent though.

I think the Packers have some real talent on defense--whoever they bring in can hopefully get them to play to their strengths and as a unit.  But I guess I'd love to find someone who has a track record of "doing more with less".

"play hard" means exactly that. Play to the level of your talent (or more) & do your job.

That is execution

AJ Hawk always played hard, couldn’t execute the way we needed him to. Same for guys like DJ Smith, Jerron McMillan, etc. I love high effort from players, I love when they do their job even more.

There is talent on that side of the ball and I will also promise you that if the things you listed happen the Packers will be back in a big time way.  I guarantee it.

It's probably been mentioned already, but worth repeating IMO.

Has there been a DC in the league with as much recent experience against the Packers' offense as Fangio? And of course NFC-N opponents, too.

If MM is serious about self-scouting as he claims, if Fangio is inside the tent perhaps he can help MM realize that HIS offensive scheme has become more than a little stale as well. Not so much the run game, but a more aggressive passing / route-running attack (e.g. rub routes, stacked WRs, all the things we've bitched about the past few years).

If Phibin is indeed on the staff that will help too.

I just want fresh eyes, a kick-ass DC, and accountability. Fangio or Pettine seem to fit.

The life of an NFL coach is brutal, and something that has to be attractive to an older candidate like Fangio is stability.  There are few franchises as stable as the Packers, and the chance to be on the same team as Rodgers, even as a coach, would be intriguing.  Regardless, I hope he is the choice.  I would really like a hire outside the current defensive staff.  I'm not sure if Gus Bradley is on the radar, but he would be a good hire as well.

I know it was Cleveland and all... and their D was pretty good all things being equal, it seems a bit underwhelming. Apparently Fangio not interested, or maybe he wanted a bidding war.

Crazy part- Wikipedia already updated. Wtf...

What I hoped happened in the interview, is the candidates came in with a plan and said "this is how I would use this player" and basically go down the roster and explain how I would use them better/different in my scheme to make the D better.  Something tangible.

At least that's what I would've have done if they had accepted my offer to interview with them.

what about:  "Players can talk to the DC"

....just that I think a DC  should  "listen" to the players sometimes, too.
