GREEN BAY, Wis. -- One of the Green Bay Packers' top undrafted rookies, inside linebacker Joe Thomas, appears to have avoided a serious injury.

His agent, Brian Anderson, said Sunday that the knee injury that knocked out Thomas after only four defensive snaps in Saturday's preseason opener at the Tennessee Titans is not expected to require surgery.

That was one of two injuries coach Mike McCarthy announced after the game. The other was to fellow undrafted rookie, Rajion Neal. The running back from Tennessee also left with a knee injury after a promising start, which included a 12-yard touchdown run in the third quarter.

There was no additional injury information available about Neal on Sunday.

Thomas also played six snaps on special teams, where he was credited with one tackle. The 6-foot-1, 227-pounder from South Carolina State saw his playing time increase in training camp practices last week after making a favorable impression on the coaches.

The Packers were off on Sunday and return to work on Monday, when they will hold a closed practice.

Jordy Nelson - torn ACL, done for season.

Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet): The initial diagnosis on WR Jordy Nelson is a torn ACL, source said. Horrible news. Awaiting MRI results to confirm.

At least he got to play in this extremely important preseason game. I'm sure it meant a lot to him.

On the bright side, I think Davante Adams is going to erupt this season. Not saying he'll replace Nelson's production (that's impossible) but they could do a lot worse than Adams for Nelson's replacement. We 'aight.

Please insert my annual rant about useless and destructive preseason games here. Colleges don't need them but professionals do?  Sure thing.

Also please insert here my annual rant about the brainlessly small 53 man roster and its cretinous and cheap-ass practice squad system. We should be able to keep Janis and White without risking losing them. And the extra running backs too, as considering the beating running backs take, we will probably need one of them too. Pay them and put them on the freaking roster already.

Thanks. Back to your regularly-scheduled programming.

Ted this past spring.

"The way to draft is to take the best player. You don't know what you're going to need. You think you need something, but this isn't play time or anything like that. This is real life. People get banged up, injuries happen. Life happens.

"What you think you're strong at, you're not necessarily strong at. If you take good, solid players that you know can contribute, albeit at a position that's maybe a little bit heavier, as long as you're taking good, solid players you're getting some value there.

I think Janis will make the team if only for his Special Teams coverage skills.   But he is much too inconsistent, and so is Myles White.  Anyone think we should look at an unemployed vet like Wes Welker or Santana Moss?

I' m  also concerned about our left tackle situation.  Barclay sucks.  Until Bak gets well, do we look elsewhere for a left tackle?   Jonathan Scott is still unemployed.  Anyone?  Buehler?  This position is too important to the health of Aaron Rodgers  to not have a really solid guy there.  What other options do we have?

Not going to happen.  Ted doesn't sign discards like Moss or Welker.  He'll go with the guys he drafted or signed as UFA.

There aren't any good street free agents left tackles.  Anybody worthwhile is on a team.

I guess Jones is with the NYG. Irregardless. We have plenty of good WRs. Irregardless of what Finley might think, Rodgers will light it up. Irregardless of the injury to Jordy. We will win SB 50. Irregardless.

In all seriousness, this injury is a bad blow to our team. Jordy is a very, very special player. Ted adds talent to the WR position in spades, and now is their time. Aside from White's STs gaffes today, he performed well as a receiver. Pinkard showed well. Montgomery should show well. I suspect Adams could have what would amount to a career year with Nelson out. Rodgers will adjust, and we are still deep in talent.

Janis now should raise his game, and I think he will.

Those opportunities don't just happen. Or, maybe they just did. Hopefully, Jordy's test results are more positive than we now believe they will be, and he can return at some point this season.

No matter, I hope Ted at least looks at possibly signing Randy Moss. That could be a very solid move, if he can still bring it.
