Did you also have low expectations of Clay Matthews after posting 5.5 sacks, 13.5 tackles for loss and 97 total tackles in four years at USC where he played in 47 total games?

Comparing apples to oranges really. Pack traded up to get Clay.....with the 26th pick. Not the 12th.

Did you bitch about anyone who didn’t like the Ha Ha pick because the professionals who spent 100s of hours pouring over tape thought he was the right pick? How about Spriggs?  How about guys like Justin Harrell or Jamal Reynolds? The list can go on and on.

Loved the Harrell and Reynolds picks, hated  did not love the Ha Ha pick.

I still have a hard time with him only having 9.5 sacks in three years especially when I keep reading he has one pash rush move and no counter moves if he gets blocked. Again I really hope he turns into a great player but my expectations are low.

But he was doubled. Can't expect a guy with that many double teams to crack double digits in sacks, can you? Pretty sure it has never been done EVER in NFL history.

Fortunately, double teaming is illegal in the NFL, isn't it?

He wasn't doubled all the time and not nearly as much as has been reported according to some. I guess it depends on what you read.

YouTube Video: The Hate Has Gone Too Far!

Thanks Finnlander. Pretty good video that reenforced much of what I was seeing watching those and his other game films, in that opposing offenses went away from him consistently. Gary will learn a lot from the Smiths... He does have impressive power with just that one arm technique. Can't wait to see what other moves this staff helps him develop and how he contributes to our D.

If I’m one of the NFCN teams I grab one of his Michigan coaches to play left tackle. They excelled at slowing Gary down.

Here's a different film study on Gary with more of his top plays by Jackson Krueger Sports - pretty solid analysis too:

Gives a much better read on what we are getting with Rashan. He does have more than a simple bull rush. He's got some freaky hand moves, with immense power when you consider he handles many OL with just one hand. He's got a quasi-swim move, unlike I've ever seen before, where he just pushes his opponent to the side, effective both left and right hand. Wild.

And, this dude has a ****in' motor. Plain to see. I'm digging this pick WAY more now, with everything we've heard and seen. See what happens when the games begin, but I like the possibilities.

Hey, at least it is a little something during this slow stretch.... anyone wanting more film reviews, I just posted some from same source in the Z, Amos, Preston thread. They are pretty damn good windows into what all of these guys will bring to this team.

I was against drafting Gary but now I can't wait to see him prove everyone wrong.

I'm calling it - dude is gonna be a first ballot hall of famer.  He'll break the all time sack record and single season sack record.  He'll also lead the league in interceptions his rookie year, leading to the first ever all-pro DE/CB combo.  Mark it down.

That's really funny, but, I just want Gary to be a reliable, effective OLB/DE/DT. We shall see soon enough whether or not they made the right choice.

β€œWe wouldn’t get [Bosa], but I want to see where he’s at and compare [Gary],” he said. β€œGoing into that, I knew we had a chance. I honestly didn’t think he was going to 12 -- I thought he was going to go way before that with how I evaluated him and looked at him. I thought he was the best in college football as an outside linebacker. I had him No. 1 because I believed in him, so I was very excited when we got him. I was running down the hallway. I know what he has and I know what he can do and I’m excited to work for him.”

Key phrase here. Smith didn't say he was the best DE or interior rusher, he thinks he was the best OLB.

β€œTo have a coach who believes in me and has that faith in me to have me as that pick and put a word in for me actually means a lot,” Gary said. β€œEvery day I’m here is a blessing; every day I’m here I’m going to work my tail off for him and do what I’ve got to do.”

As long as he's working hard I don't care who it's for! This should give everyone optimism that Gary is going to turn out. Haven't heard a player talk about a coach like this since maybe CM talking about Kevin Greene?

Interesting how divided the opinions on Gary are. Some of us like to think we're smart cause we played high school and college football , coached maybe, or just have a knack for being football savants. Others are experts cause they've been watching on TV for years Others look/listen and take a wait and see approach. No doubt it makes for interesting debate.

It's crazy how big money and fanaticism has developed in sports, and the attention and hordes of information spewed about the NFL draft is just stupefying. That said, you have to take caution when a bunch of draftniks and bloggers spread pre-draft information on a player. They are glorified fans. But when guys like Don Brown(Gary's Defensive coordinator at Michigan), Mike Smith (noted developer of  stud NFL players) , and Daniel Jeremiah (NFL College Scout and Draft Analyst) say a guy is top 10 NFL draft material, a bit more weight might be given. Sure thing ? Obviously not, but it sheds a bit more light on why the Packers used D12 to pick him.

Great points GD and PD.

The ones who are truly vested in the Gary pick at #12 is Gutekunst and his staff. Their resources are immense, and they've studied the player for years. I think they've earned their cred with what they've done these past couple of years. This is going to be really fun to watch.

Man, I've been wanting some killer D on this team for years. Massive talent infusion this offseason. Gary will benefit from that, as he is no longer the best player on his team. Seriously, opposing Os won't be able to constantly run plays away from him, double and triple team him. With Smith coaching him? This ought to be good.

He'll get his numbers...
