OVERVIEW

Kenny Clark, Sr., went to prison in 2005, leaving 9-year-old Kenny, Jr. to mature faster than most of the boys his age. With the help of his mother and others, Clark maintained a good relationship with this father and turned the adversity into a positive, working hard to become an excellent high school player. He started four games as a freshman in 2013 (31 tackles, four for loss, one sack), then stayed a fixture in the lineup the following year. The 2014 second-team All-Pac-12 selection (58 tackles, 5.5 for loss) graduated to all-conference first team as a junior, using his strength and agility to finish second on the Bruins in tackles (75), tackles for loss (11) and sacks (six) despite lining up in the interior. Clark also showed a knack for batting down passes, breaking up five on the year.

ANALYSIS

STRENGTHS

Former high school wrestler who can generate torque through upper body strength and leverage with power in his hips. Will hammer finesse guards and centers with initial punch and overtake the neutral zone. Quick to diagnose run direction and will race to set the edge against blocker. Low center of gravity and powerful core make him a challenging block to seal for linemen. Cranks up a nasty bull rush to collapse pocket when single blocked. Plays with plus instincts and football IQ. Has feel for trap blocks and double teams and is quick to read and react to screens. Can work his way through double teams and squeeze the gap.

WEAKNESSES

Short and missing arm length to be better tackle finisher. Allowed unusual amount of broken tackles (4) for an interior lineman. Not a quick twitch athlete. Needs to do a better job of bringing feet and hips through contact. Gets too anxious pursuing down line and can lose backside contain. Despite strength, lack of size will be challenging in some matchups. Straight line bull rusher with average lateral quickness for twists.

DRAFT PROJECTION

Round 2

SOURCES TELL US

"What bothers me about Clark is that he was so much better against weaker competition than he was against better talent. I like him, but not like everyone is hyping him up." -- AFC Pac-12 scout

BOTTOM LINE

Has the strength and talent to be a plug and play 4-3 nose, but lack of size and concerns about his value on third downs could push his draft value into the second day. Clark's wrestling background gives him a huge leg up at the point of attack and he won't be 21 until October which means he's still filling out his frame. Would benefit from a year of rotational work as he continues to physically mature.

Wow that's a shock. I wasn't going to be surprised if Clark was the guy, but I thought it would be because everyone else was gone.

Ted has a lot of faith in his West Coast scouts!

Clark has a lot of upside, great attitude and energy. Needs some work, but he will be a nice addition. I'm guessing they like how well rounded his game is and can be. He's not an elite run stuffed like Reed or an elite pass rusher like Billings, he's just good at both.

Really surprised by who is falling. Everyone is thinking they can get a DL later!

They showed the war room cam after the pick and Ted let out a big "whoa" sigh when everyone was cheering. I think he knows he made a difficult pick with so much talent on the board.

My hunch is that Clark is a guy they've wanted for a while and weren't really expecting the chips to fall this way. That said, guarantee Clark was on top of their board...above Ragland, Reed, Robinson, etc

Just listened to TT's presser. Keep in mind with TT's demeanor, but he sounded pretty happy this kid was there. Believes this kid will be a pass rusher as well and can play on 3rd down.

Ted said he "took a few calls" regarding trade opportunities but nothing he took convinced him it was worth trading down.

Thompson: "We're glad we got the young man we did today"

By Michael Cohen of the Journal Sentinel

Green Bay — General manager Ted Thompson addressed the media shortly after the Green Bay Packers selected nose tackle Kenny Clark with the No 27 overall pick.

The following is a summary of what Thompson had to say about Clark, a nose tackle from UCLA:

(On picking Clark at No. 27) We were very excited to select Kenny Clark. We weren't sure we'd have that opportunity.

(On possible trades) There are all different kind of scenarios that you look at. People call about trade possibilities or trade scenarios. ... We took a few calls. We didn't ever get to a position where we wanted to pursue that. But we had some conversations.

(On what stood about Clark) Just the whole package. He's a natural athlete, moves really good. Workout sessions were excellent.

(On the draft overall) We're glad we got the young man we did today. We think that's a good start to this draft.

(On Clark's workouts) Had a marvelous workout in Indianapolis and Los Angeles.

(On the phone call) He's excited about being in the NFL. He's dying to show us that this was a good pick and that he's a good player.

(On Clark's character) He carries himself well. He's articulate. He'll stand up here and you'll be impressed with him.

Saw some turd in the Twitterverse say the Packers were dumb for taking Clark over Nkemdiche...what this moran doesn't get is while Nkemdiche is a great aflete...he doesn't fit the system like Clark does. Plus he's not Packer Peeps.

Did you see his posse when he was selected?

There is no way that group was going to fit in GB.

Very happy they didn't take Nkemdiche.  People seem to think h dominated in college and his only issues are off-field.  Not even lose.  Nkemdiche never came close to being a dominant player he was supposed to be.  6 sacks and 16 tackles for loss in his 3 years career.  All the talent in the world but never showed it on the field.

Reports are the Card's are telling Nkemdiche to distance himself from his own brother. Talk about awkward. But apparently his bro is a big problem as his other family members.

I think THAT brought back memories of Johnny Jolly and what a huge pain in the ass it was to keep him from his family as well. To me, that's a headache Ted didn't want.

GMs need to realize sooner than later that history often repeats itself.
The same guys that are thug in college are the same guys who will be thug in the pros. Money be damned, they don't care. It's more important to their self to 'project an image' than it is to dedicate themselves to a team.

Happy with the pick. THought he was a realistic possibility prior to the draft but did not expect all those other names to be available. At least we can say for certainty that TT got HIS guy because he passed on Reed, Robinson, Billings, Butler to get Clark

There's so many DL guys still available. Hopefully if it keeps shaking out like this we see GB get a bit more aggressive tomorrow and move up a bit to get another one of those guys or a ILB. Keep shoring up that front 7

Like AQ and Guion.    Packer People is a myth.

With all those front 7 players on the board I'm surprised we didn't move down.

Wouldn't doubt that they wanted to but obviously they must not have gotten a deal they liked so they stood pat.

where is the highlight video with horrible music?  It's not an official pick until we see highlights while listening to someone rhyme about over priced champaign,  illicit sex and illegal narcotics.

This fills the hole the Packers currently have.  Not sure what the Packers think they still need. Perhaps a big safety to play behind the middle.  I read somewhere that big safeties play in the middle linebacker spot is the current NFL trend. So maybe the Packers do not think they need a quality middle linebacker.
