Doesn't track the deep ball very well at all

But he's hell on wheels on bubble screens etc. And with an offense built around Cobb, ya gotta have a stand-in case of injury

I also like the fact that Sam Seale, the west coast scout saw every game and every practice with TyMont because his son was on the same team. He'll be active on Sundays for KR/PR and to be a gunner, anything they get out of him on offense is gravy

He's complete utility player.   I basically see him doing what Cobb did when this offense bogged down.  Except now you've got Cobb lined up at WR as well.  ST is a given.  This guy is skill player expanding foam.

With that said, Ty better be hitting that playbook like a mother****er to be able to pull of a fraction of what Cobb did last season.

I don't know if other people were as impressed with what Cobb did last season for this offense as I was.  That skill set with a QB brain?!  The guy was sublime.

Cobb has mentioned numerous times how he is in the QB meetings with Rodgers. Nelson too. That's why they're so in sync with each other.

Hopefully Ty (Durvante too) follows suit

There's not a better example of Cobb seeing the field like a QB and being in sync with AR than Cobb running right by a flat footed and ****ed Chris Conte on 4th and 8 to end the 2013 regular season.

You know, to help with blocking.

Watch Jordy.

That's some sort of special effects thing, right?

Faster than Superman I tell ya!

While he is scouted to not be able to track the deep ball well, I would be very interested to see if he can master the wheel route.  I still think he can add the flexibility of putting him in the backfield or in standard WR position (how does a defense counter?).  I would love to see some 3rd down back concepts (including but not limited to a wheel route forcing an LB to cover him) developed with him.  You could even leave Lacy in the game as a run, FB, screen option/decoy, etc. if Montgomery fulfills the "Cobb with size" description.

He's a bit of a work in progress as a receiver and he wouldn't have been there in the third if that were true. Love his upside but he's got a ways to go.

Right now he resembles more of a RB who has played some WR and I like the idea of using him in the backfield as well.

Interesting article.  I wonder if MM has the same views on Montgomery being a hybrid WR-RB.  The NFL has become obsessed with mismatches and thus the explosion of "hybrid" players so it's definitely intriguing.  I just look at the wheel route Cobb ran out of the backfield against the Patriots as the type of play we could see more of.

Although I wouldn't expect to see much of it from Montgomery in 2015.  It's a lot to ask a raw WR still learning his own position to also learn a new hybrid WR/RB role that would likely include significant pre-snap reads from the backfield.  Maybe something for 2016 and beyond.

Thanks for that CUPF. I like the idea of TyMont and Cobb split in the backfield. Montgomery will need to gain the trust of McCarthy and Rodgers in protection schemes though before that happens, not just learning the WR/RB routes from out of the backfield.

Yeah I'm really starting to think that TT/MM are focusing a lot on hybrid players that don't leave the field but offer multiple options of formations.  Helps create mismatches in the no huddle on offense; helps prevent mismatches on defense.  Randall, Collins and Montgomery all seem to fit that hybrid mold.  The "elephant end" position is hybrid.  The focus on turning Lacy into a 3 down back (rather than a relegated "3rd down back"), and the aversion in taking a 2 down ILB high in the draft.

It'll be interesting but this is what the game is trending towards.  No longer do offenses and defenses just line up and beat the man across from them; it's all about creating mismatches and adjusting plays so the man across from you has no chance to win.

Here's an article from espn- offers some insight on Montgomery's work in the classroom

http://www.espnwisconsin.com/common/mor ... t_id=53491

...the Green Bay Packers coaches put all their youngsters on a dry-erase board to test how much recall each player had of the two days of playbook installations they’d gotten.

The guy at the head of the class? Third-round pick Ty Montgomery, a wide receiver from Stanford.

“There were some [Xs and Os] things he did on the board – it was very, very, very impressive,” quarterbacks/wide receivers coach Alex Van Pelt recalled. “Like, freaky.”

Yeah, the game is totally changing CUPackFan. Looks like the Packers are well out in front of that change too. Both O and D. At the time, I hated the Montgomery pick (kind of wanted Ted to go ALL D), but after thinking about this very thing, and his ability to step right in for Cobb if need be with little to no drop off, well, that works fine.

Add his KR/PR abilities, and this pick could very well turn out to be another steal. I do believe he will have that kind of impact on our team.

Also, think about him and Cobb on the field together, and how defenses will have to keep their heads on a swivel. Aaron Rodgers is going to love this kid. Super dynamic playmaker.

A month later, and in the two practices I saw in TC, Ty Montgomery stole the show on offense. Without question. I can't wait for you to see him play. The guy is electric. You get the feeling he will take it to the house on just about every touch, as a receiver, out of the backfield, or on a return, and they were using him in all 3 capacities. Remarkable pick by Ted in R3.

We might want to curb the enthusiasm just a wee bit on Montgomery. To think he'd "step right in for Cobb if need be with little to no drop off" is ridiculous. Cobb caught 91 balls last season. The record for most catches by a Packers rookie wide receiver is 55 by Sterling Sharpe.
