OVERVIEW Purdue has won a total of nine games in the four years Yancey has been on campus, so he's flown a bit under the radar. The Atlanta native has been a strong part of any success the team has had since 2013, however. As a true freshman, he started five games, catching 32 passes for 546 yards and two touchdowns. He was a part-time starter again in 2014 (seven starts, 12-147, three TDs) before hitting his stride as a junior. Yancey led the Boilermakers with 700 yards on 48 receptions,...
The "The Reacher" Thompson getting cute again - or is he showing how he is still the smartest guy in the room? DRAFT PROJECTION Round 7-PFA SOURCES TELL US "Priority free agent. Has to play down the field because he's not going to get open underneath. He's got size and can run a little bit so he's got a chance." -- AFC South regional scout BOTTOM LINE Four year letterman who has relied on quantity for his production totals. Yancey is a stiff-hipped vertical receiver only with good size but...
Not sure about this guy. The written narrative does not seem to imply a high upside. I am guessing this is a throwaway pick. Pick him and see if he sticks. I am not sure if a projected 7th/UDFA is good for this round.
When Abby was drafted around the same spot as Yancey in 2014 there were 9 pages of unbridled love and rejoicing. There was talk that his selection may expedite GB moving on from Jordy and Cobb. When GB grabbed Geronimo Allison as an UDFA there were four comments. Three of them were pictures of Indians. We don't know the first, second, third, or fourth damn thing about how these picks are going to turn out.
Sounds like our GM in training really likes him. From Optimistic Bob's summary: Made All-Big Ten second team. “Big, strong guy,” said Eliot Wolf, the team’s director of football operations. “Excellent hands. Good speed. He plays much faster than the 4.5.” Finished with 141 receptions for 2,344 (16.6) and 20 TDs. “Really confident player,” Wolf said. “Sometimes with guys that don’t get invited to the combine you don’t always see that. I thought he was a player from day one.”
I think the last time Thompson cut a rookie that had be drafted in the first five rounds was back in 2009. I would say this pick was a hard one to figure out, but I've just come to accept that Thompson drafts 40-times and 3-cone drill results these days.
I think they hoped, with his size and frame, that he would be a physical receiver with speed. Just never clicked upstairs I guess. Worth the gamble because he could be another Ty Montgomery if it ever clicks.
