I doubt the Packers were intentionally kicking short regardless who said what. With the Packers coverage units that would have been considered an absolute failure because, prior to this season. it was a given the opponent would return the ball past the 25 yard line. I'd prefer the touchback over the short kick and hoping to gain a couple yards in field position.

Some good kickers are good at trading height for distance and are very consistent.  Good teams take advantage of that and purposely have kickers place high kicks inside the 5, this is exactly opposite of Crosby who had trouble on some days reaching the endzone with a line drive.  Those short line drive kicks are asking for trouble especially with the new rules not allowing a run up for the kicking team.  It was so bad that the Packers had a kicker on the roster for just kickoffs but the guy got injured in warmups.

I agree that finding the next guy for 15 years is not easy, but its better to start when not competing for a SB vs having the wrong guy when it really matters.

9 and 87 will benefit from adding more weapons...a Y TE, a slash type player like Deebo, etc.

And a Y  TE will benefit from a guy like Doubs too

From Zach Kruse:

Romeo Doubs had a catch of at least 20 yards or caught a touchdown pass in 8 of his 13 games, including 6 of his first 8 before the ankle injury.

Crosby should take whatever the Packers offer just to stay in GB. His family grew up there. The guy has made plenty of money and it would be well worth it for him to stay in GB as opposed to possibly start bouncing around the league.

Most people have a hard time taking a pay cut, probably more so to athletes who have been put on a pedestal and catered to in life.  So to the average person, making $1.2m plus maybe some bonuses seems like a really nice pay day, it may not be as attractive to Crosby, although I highly doubt he has any other options to make that kind of money.

If Crosby leaves, it will be as the all-time leader in games played for the Packers.

It will be a long time before anyone approaches that number (258 games) if ever.

The names I forgot about on that list that are in the top 10 are Rob Davis and Ed West (167 games each).

If Crosby and Rodgers both leave as expected, the oldest veteran remaining will be Bakh (130 games). The only other players left that preceded MLF will be Kenny Clark and Aaron Jones.

Crosby doesn't strike me as an ego guy. With all the money this guy has made that shouldn't even be a factor based on how long he has lived in GB. He should take the sure thing if it was even on the table. He's not going to be happy if he signs with some shit team, gets cut after a few weeks, gets signed by a team whos PK is injured for a few weeks, and just starts bouncing around. To uproot your family for a year of that doesn't sound appealing to me.

Here's a link with top kickers, including Mooney who may or may not be money on FGs. But I do appreciate that he played for the MEAN GREEN

Packers have (4) 7th rounders if they want to invest in a young leg

Hearing Ryland from Maryland is gaining a lot of steam. Moody from UM is the sexier choice but will likely be the first K off the board and probably gone before R7. IMO, the best K in the draft is Dunn from NC State. Not sure where he will go, but he'd be my first choice. Either of these three will cost you a pick though. It's a pretty good year for K in the draft...at least the top guys. In most years you might have one that is worthy to be drafted.

Eddie Ogamba is an interesting prospect...African soccer player from Kenya by way of Minnesota. Started off at Iowa State, but struggled a bit with accuracy and they just seemed content to use him as KO specialist. He transferred to South Dakota and showed very good improvement on FG's...absolute howitzer of a leg. Don't think he is draftable, but definitely a guy you could sign to an UDFA deal and see if Bisaccia can develop him. Probably a bit of a big ask to make him PK1, but if you sign him to the PS could develop into a big time guy.

It was just a few years back that Crosby took a pay cut to stay on the team, so he's familiar with the process.

I'd like to see him go through TC at least, and find out if he has regained any strength in his leg. If he has, and compensation can be agreed on, I have no problem going another year with him.

FWIW, I don't know that he can make the 50 yarders any longer, but he should be good from the middle 40 yards range.

There was a time when he was a killer making tackles, but he's getting too old to give up his body like that. He made a tackle this past season and looked like he really didn't want any part of it.

Its the right move, but its not easy finding the next 15 yr kicker.
Just look at the lesser teams like bears/vikes and they've cycled through a handful of crappy kickers - some costing them critical games.

But the huge reason to do it now - is Bisaccia. That's who you want working with the new guy and its a fair guess Rich is gonna be an HC some day. So make the transition now, save the $$ as you noted -  and put the best ST coach around on the case.

"Rich is gonna be a HC someday".       I swear I could hear some Angels sing when I read that. Anyone else hear that?
