Hafley has to prove he can get his Defensive system to work, prior to going after a HC job, anywhere. I saw lot of Barry-like schemes on the field, this past season, that would tend to make me have second thoughts about seeing Hafley as a HC. He needs Gute to draft 4-3 scheme defenders to show how his system works. So far, Hafley hasn't shown anyone anything, regarding any DC skills he may have, let alone any HC abilities.

So our defense this year:

Points allowed: 6th

Yards Allowed: 4th

Turnovers: 6th

Sacks: 9th

"Hafley hasn't shown anyone anything" ? This is the NFL.... TEAMS ARE GOING TO MOVE THE BALL AND SCORE POINTS. People watch games and if the defense doesn't get a 3 and out on every series they "suck" ....

How was their actual strength of schedule?  They lost all 4 to the Lions and Vikings.

Yes....even using "sack percentage" (percentage of pass plays you sacked the QB) we are 11th.  Playoff teams below us (worse) in that category are; Philly, Vikings, Detroit, KC, Buffalo, Pittsburgh. As I alluded to in another thread, because we watch every play of every Packer game and not other teams, we lose all perspective of what the "norm" is. Of course this stat doesn't take into account what team had to do to get these sacks that would lead to more problems in coverage (how many players did you have to rush).

Yeah, that stat surprised me.  Does that mean there were over twenty teams in the NFL with a worse pass rush than the Packers?

The other thing is the Packers don’t have a premier pass rusher that we can point to, they have a bunch of guys with a few each. Gary had 7.5 to lead the team, which isn’t a premier total. Their other first round DE had the same number as a DB (Nixon) and at least one of those was a gimme on a broken play.

Of Gary's 7.5 sacks, one was a play where the center snapped the ball early and no one on the OL actually moved. At least one other (and maybe 2) happened when there was a bad snap and the QB had to spend time grabbing the ball off the ground). At least 3 others were coverage sacks. Gary has a good motor and keeps hustling, which is why he gets those types of sacks before the other DL often do, but he rarely gets a sack by just overwhelming the guy blocking him.

Van Ness doesn't even seem to get the types of sacks you get by having a good motor. He just engages the tackle and then doesn't have another move to go to.

Per Schefter, Ben Johnson has been hired as the Bears new coach:

A new day in Chicago: The #Bears are finalizing a deal to hire Ben Johnson as their head coach, per sources.

Johnson is set to fly there soon and contract parameters are in place. Barring a last-minute snag, the #Lions OC lands with an NFC North rival.

Definitely going to hurt Jared Goff.

You have to wonder how much distraction this was for Johnson.

So would McCarthy take the OC position if asked. if not where does this hire of Johnson leave him?

I don’t think a new, young HC who’s never been one would want a SB winning , former HC as his new offensive coordinator. That’s just too much ego in one room and I think Johnson would find that too intimidating.

Not to mention if things go south early, Johnson does not need to hear clamoring from the media to fire him and promote MM. which would surely happen

Hope I am wrong but this hiring is eerily similar to the Packers snagging Mike Holmgren from SF to cultivate the talent of a young Brett Favre.  Hoping the Bears continue to find ways to F things up, but I am starting to be concerned about the NFC North becoming even tougher - though I expect the Vikings and Lions to take a step back next year.

If they fix the OL their O should definitely improve.  "You get what you emphasize."

Hard to say what will happen with their D.  After getting a lot of hype in the offseason and starting strong in 24, they really dropped off.  Partially due to injuries. but also promising young players not developing.
