I think Carolina and Denver are much different teams

The Broncos are still more of a passing team than running team but when they can run the ball (like they did against GB) they are really tough to stop.  We all know how good Manning is at pre-snap reads.

The Panthers are going to run the ball and run it some more. They will control the clock and play very good defense.   But make no mistake about it - the Panthers do not have playmakers at WR like the Broncos do.  Olsen is very good but he's not Thomas or Sanders.

I agree with concerns about the game overall against Carolina.  Road game.  Very good defense. Power run game.  Those will be challenges for a Packers team that has not looked good since the Rams game.

This AM's article in the Post Gazette highlights the players dissatisfaction with the   offensive play calling. In a Bleacher Report article today it was said that the Packers need to adjust the offense to the players abilities, and  is cited as a major factor the coaching staff must consider. In a draft and teach system either the players cannot grasp the system or the coaches are not teaching well or a combination of both.

In the same Post Gazette article McCarthy is quoted as saying, the players are just grumbling, there is no need for offensive adjustments

the offense simply needs to execute better. Based on that statement MM is displaying his unwillingness to change or modify what he thinks should work. MM has done this many times in the past sometimes it is successful sometimes not.

Based on the above and the play of the Carolina Panthers last night if no offensive adjustments are made to take into account the players abilities then the Packers are in for another major fight this Sunday.

Carolina is going to be interesting.

Players are frustrated over the scheme. MM seems to be telling them to STFU and do your job.

Watched the game again. I'm almost ready to side with MM. Plenty of players half assed it in Denver. Including Aaron Rodgers. He had players open. Or at least open enough. Early in the play. Just wouldn't pull the trigger. There was a play early in the 4th where Denver dropped out of press into zone and Aaron had 3 guys open but the coverage fooled him. Havent seen that in a long time. The DL was really bad as well. Anyone catch the play where Palmer dropped into coverage down the seam covering no one. Pass was completed right behind him only Palmer continued to jog down the field like it was warm ups?

Maybe MM is playing things close to the vest and isn't about to divulge any potential changes. I don't think so. I think he's telling his players to man up.

Something is going to give Sunday.

Fixed that for you.

oh gawd help us, the mighty panthers needed OT to beat the hapless colts at home on MNF.  they are world beaters that will pummel us into packed meat.  oh whoa is us.  don't even bother watching this upcoming game - it's already over, crown 'em.

chresus jist

I'd like to see Kennard Backman get some reps. He is a TE who can stretch the field and make something happen after the catch. He was doing so through much of TC. I hope they work with him to get him up to speed. We could use that.

I also hope our DL returns from their bye weeks... would be nice. Somebody needs to go and punch Mike Daniels. All that talk...

Green Bay opened as a slight favorite in Carolina at some books Tues.morning. Not all books have the line up yet. At best or worst depending on how you look at it, Green Bay -3 looks like the limit...it may slide back toward "pick" em by game time. The O/U opened at 46.

Joe public must be giving more respect to the Packers than we have around here at the moment with the Packers as slight road favorites.

Do yourself a favor...mortgage your home, wife and kids....no just kidding. Never ever do that. But do place a small friendly wager with that smart ass guy at work that thinks he knows everything.

Take the Pack straight up if you can get it...or lay up to -2.5 points. Any dumb ass guy at work will probably take the bet.  Thank me next Sunday, late afternoon.

The trap has been set. I would have rather had Carolina win a blow out, but maybe winning in OT is an even better set up.

Like it or not, McCarthy was never going to "all out"  expose our playbook and schemes on offense or defense to an AFC team, on the road, in the middle of the season. National TV or not. He don't care bout that stuff.  MM is a grinder, the end justifies the means , meat and potatoes, stoopy face kind of guy.

Add in coming off a bye, and the thin air of Denver and this was a bad bad combination all along. It just wasn't our night, a bad spot and not a game you want to shoot your wad in with Carolina coming up. We tried, it was obvious right away it wasn't working... and it was then a game for a defensive re-treat...live to play another week...save your powder for a game that will vastly impact the rest of your season.

Relax. Your old Green Bay Packers will show up in Carolina. We will look  more like the team before we went vanilla vs. two AFC *ucks. Get over it...this is how MM does it.

Now go make that small friendly wager with the guy that grew up in the Twin Cities...we can all savor an adult beverage late Sunday afternoon on following my practical advice.

Looking back...it will be...well of course...the Packers will be just fine. It's so clear, this was the game we wanted...this is the game circled...I wonder how much of the bye week was spent...scheming THIS game?

Good luck on short week Cam. And by the way...that game film from Denver and against San Diego...go ahead...study it real , real hard. Let's see how that works out for you.

Opps...gotta let Mr. Newton go....GQ has an interview...and SI...and what do you know...OPRAH!

Nice...enjoy it while it lasts...Sunshine.

Agree with your post, and I saw this live and then the in-game replay, and then when I re-watched. This play happened after they benched Palmer for Ryan because as Capers said they needed to communicate with Nate.

Didn't have to rewatch anything.  It was very clear to me sunday night that our guys were disinterested in their occupation.  How the F that happens in a prime time game vs. a SB contender, after a bye is beyond me.  Started "too fast"? and got a bit fat and happy at winning close gritty games when not playing their best?  Got me.  Teams usually use the bye to fix what's wrong, not develop new problems.

Their season is at a hinge point between sunday night and this coming weekend.  How they come out of it will say a lot about where they are going.

I'd rather see Ryan out there at this point. He'll mess up, but has better upside.

I fail to see the Backman value.  I actually was more impressed in TC by Perillo, and am glad he's back in the mix.

You can't tell from the Cam pic. But those velvet slippers have a monogrammed C on the right and an N on the left.

When monogrammed velvet slippers are the third most ridiculous part of your outfit, things have gone horribly wrong.

Shudder to think what's stitched on the thong.

Interesting stat heard earlier today.

With Rodgers as the QB, the Packers have now lost 9 road games in a row to a team with a winning record. Next up, a road game to a team with a winning record.

statistics to me are for losers - MM

Well, that is a losing statistic.

Here is an interesting situational take on what the Packers are facing this week from a bettors perspective. This is written for a SDQL database query of NFL situational trends.

It aint a lock...and trends are made to be broken...stats are for losers...blah blah blah.

But it is an interesting set up in my opinion.

----

The NFL has long been a contrarian league, betting on the least likely apparent outcome often pays dividends. One such situation is playing on a road team, that just lost on the road in their last game. Most NFL bettor's look at what just happened, so playing on a team that just lost on the road, and on the road again is a hard trigger to pull for most. Big mistake as they are:

A and p:AL

SU:
450-576-1 (-2.70, 43.9%)

ATS:
552-453-22 (1.09, 54.9%)

That is 55% in database history, on such a simple situation!

We can advance the narrative by making this game a competitively lined game, from -3 to +3:

A and p:AL and line > -3.5 and line < 3.5

SU:
184-134-0 (1.54, 57.9%)

ATS:
177-129-12 (1.99, 57.8%)

and here are the heavy artillery additions, that took place right after division realignment:

A and p:AL and line > -3.5 and line < 3.5 and NB and date >= 20031123 and surface = grass

SU:
62-19-0 (5.60, 76.5%)

ATS:
60-18-4 (6.23, 77.9%)

We have added NB  (no bye) and a hard date for the past 12 years, and in 9 of those 12 seasons this situation has won 75% or more!

Under coach Mike McCarthy, the Packers have been good at bouncing back from poor performances. That’s why I’m so interested in seeing what happens on Sunday. Carolina is a very good team, but the match-ups are much more favorable for Green Bay. Cam Newton is a young quarterback, tight end Greg Olsen is the only big-time receiving weapon, they have no Von Millers or DeMarcus Wares coming off the edge, and other than Josh Norman, the secondary is just OK. And If the Packers lay another egg? OK, then it might be time to panic.

Agreed. If MM doesn't right the ship, this could be the start of a downward spiral. I also have to ask the question: Is ARod following Favre in terms of his attitude? His body language v. Denver, his questioning of MM's decision not to call TO before the half (OK, I questioned it too but then I thought Denver would probably use the time to score again), his not trusting receivers, etc., seems to point toward his thinking he's bigger than the team.
