Other than that, seems like a sound plan. Glad you thought it through and aren't just shoot'n from the hip.
I reread the first page of this thread. Jan 2017.
Not much different from December 2017.
I wonder why that is....Guess all us "fans" don't know anything.
I'm guessing 1 of 2 things happens...either MM let's Dom go (or he "retires")
Or.....
MM steps down & "retires" himself because he refused to change DC's.
Changes need to happen. It sucks we had to miss the playoffs for our current regime to see that.
If no changes occur, there's only 1 thing a fan can do to force change. Stop watching & stop going to the games.
Boris, I really believe that Dom will take the "retire" option I think he is 67 and will be 68 before next year so I think he will just ride off in to the sunset.
I just don't think the Packers will make this wide sweeping changes everyone wants I just don't think that is how they do things. Their mentality IMHO is that you don't fire a GM or HC that has gotten you to 8 straight playoffs and have pretty much been in the thick of things for a decade. Sorry guys I just don't see it.
I do agree that changes need (and will to a certain extent happen) but I think this franchise isn't going to go George Steinbrenner and fire everyone. It just isn't how they operate.
Dom has indicated he wants to keep coaching and MM is entering the last year of his contract. Interesting to see how it all plays out but I've got Dom being gone as no better than a 50-50 proposition.
Having a good pass rush is huge. However, having a good pass rush doesn't matter when coverage is blown this bad.

Blown coverages are going to happen occasionally with any defense; with Dom's they're a frequent and regular occurrence.
Diggr14 posted:The way i figure it, 2018 will have to be the year of major name player cuts, and a tactical and quick re-tooling with a new regime.
Spring Cut: Cobb, Matthews, Bulaga, Goodson, Kendricks, Q. Rollins, Hawkins, Brice
Extend(yrs): Adams(5), Evans(1), Goode(1), Burnett (4), Linsley(3), House(2), Dial(2)
Working with the extensions from Sport Trac / estimated value - the Packers would be left with 30-33M in cap room and 40 players on roster +8 in the draft (minus costs of signing players). Obviously, there could be 5-10 other minor cuts depending on evaluations from the new GM on second stringers/special teams.
30M in free agency would allow us one splashy FA and shots at retreads or players that did not catch on their past team.
I dont think Hundley increased his value in his exhibition. It would have been nice had he done that, we would be looking at a minimum a 2nd round pick in this upcoming draft for his services, now I just dont see the upside in dealing him this spring unless he plays the next 2 games and shows something out there.
Team could look something like this:
QB: Rodgers, Hundley
FB: Ripkowski
RB: Williams, Jones, Mays
WR/RB: Montgomery
WR: Nelson, Adams, Davis, FA, DP
TE: FA, FA, DPLT: Bak
LG: Taylor
C: Linsley
RG: Evans
RT: Spriggs
OL Bench: K. Murphy, DP, DP, FA
K: Crosby
P: Vogel
LS: FA
DL: Daniels, Clark, Adams, Lowry, Dial, DP, FA
LB: Perry, Fackrell, Biegel, Martinez, A. Brooks, J. Ryan, DP, DP, FA
CB: House, Randall, King, FA, FA, DP
S: Jones, Burnett, Clinton-Dix, FA
Looking at the FA crop, i dont know if I would go for a splashy player this season: Guys like Kyle Fuller or Prince Amukamara or both would be a nice addition to our CB mess. At TE we could use a guy like Tyler Eifert if he could stay healthy. OLB is pretty weak in this FA class, it will need to be addressed in the first 3 rounds of the 2018 draft.A guy that might be willing to take a 1 year deal to re-establish value for himself: Allen Robinson (WR).
We currently own 8 picks in the 2018 NFL Draft (originals + 7th from Buffalo).
Example 4 rd Mock Draft for what I have above (7-9 finish 13th overall pick):
1. Clellin Ferrell - DE Clemson (Trade down to 20, acquire 2nd in 2019)2. Mark Andrews - TE Oklahoma
3. Josh Allen - LB - Kentucky (trade up top of 3rd) / lose 4th round pick 2019
4. Braden Smith - G - Auburn
No way should Clay Matthews be cut. Agree 100% that at this stage of his career he's a mediocre pass-rusher at best. Will still beat up on 20% of the weaker tackles in the league but good-to-average tackles can shut him down. But he is still a very good player against the run. The Packers should have enough cap space where retaining him is an easy choice. I agree with the rest of the cuts. Randall Cobb will occasionally flash but is pretty much done and is not worth the money. Might keep Bulaga but he would have to take a significant and straight pay cut for next season. If he misses all of next year, which is probably what happens, the Packers cannot pay him for 2018 and 2019 just to get play for 2019.
I also think Jahri Evans should go. I was a big proponent of signing him before this season, and he's done a commendable job, but he has a lot of weaknesses that negatively impact some things that this offense likes to do. He is a phone-booth type player, and does not do a good job when having to block out in space (screen pass). Davon House is just a bad football player against both the run and the pass and should be let go.
Even though the defense is a mess once again and unquestionably needs pass-rushers and cornerbacks that can cover, I think the biggest need on this team is wide receiver. Cobb really should be gone and Nelson is another player that just doesn't have much left in the tank. Jordy is a smart and savvy guy, wouldn't be so shocking to see him bounce back with a 1000 yard, 8 TD type of performance but if that happens it would be because of experience and know-how. But he'll be 33 and there is little doubt that his physical skills have eroded and if there is a big season left in him it's likely just one more big season. Considering McCarthy proved again yesterday that the running game is just something to throw in the trash, the Packers really need 3 good receivers to make this offense run like the head coach wants and this group needs some upgrades badly. If Adams wants to test free agency I don't think Thompson has any choice but to throw the franchise tag on him. All things being equal, I think I'd list the team needs as something like WR, CB, OLB, CB, OG, OT, TE. Tight end is definitely a big need, but I have it down on the list because I think WR, CB, pass-rusher are more critical needs and the OL needs reinforcements because this team can't win unless #12 is healthy. Montravius Adams is kind of a key guy too. Pass-rushing isn't all about OLBs, they need better push with the three guys up front. It would be nice if Adams can step up and help out there because I don't think the Packers will be in a position to spend a premium draft pick on the D-line.
"Confusion" on assignments.
Blown Coverages.
3 separate incidents of 10 guys on the field leading to 3 TD's.
Another 12 men on the field leading to another 7.
None of that schit can ever happen. Ever.
But as ridiculous as that is, most concerning to me is the complete lack of urgency, energy, focus, and accountability a Capers defense has shown time and again. None of these guys outside Randall had even the slightest hot seat put on him for lack of performance.
Ironically, once he did, look how he responded.
But a Kyler Fackrell, HHCD, Nick Perry, Q Rollins, Jake Ryan, etc have NO worries of getting cut. Players like Datone Jones can under perform year after year and play out their rookie contracts with no worries.
Same goes with these assistants. Do you think Wiston Moss or Darren Perry loses any sleep for under performing players and shi* results? Hell no. Why would they?
That's what has to change IMO more then anything.

Lowry trucked his guy.
Interesting angle mentioned on why MM might not want to change DC in the last year of his contract.
No Playoffs could mean changes at 1265
Extend MM for two years on condition he gets a new DC. Solved.
Who picks the next DC?
"Would McCarthy really want to go into the final year of his contract with a new defensive coordinator?".
Would hate to risk a drop off with our bottom ranked defense.

ANYONE ELSE! How COULD it be worse?
TT has made it clear in the past that the head coach will make all hiring and firing decisions with his staff and I don't see that changing. It's MM's call and right now I see a change at DC as no better than 50-50.
What happens when we have Dom coaching another year? How the hell am I going to get excited about Packer football knowing our Defense will look as confused at the end of the year as they do in the beginning of the year.
The same way you got excited the last 7 years
Thank you posting Diggr14!! Will be fun to watch unfortunately now that we are in loser land. Any thoughts on your Boy BJ making a comeback?
This off-season should prove to be very interesting.
The way I see it, it's time for Murphy to grow a pair, or show 'em if he's got 'em.
Since TT and MM are going into the last year of their contracts, I think it would be the perfect time to either extend them (with provisions, of course) or replace them.
I doubt there are many cuts, in all actuality.
If TT and MM don't ****can Dom at the end of the year then I would fire them all. You might want to do that anyway than deal with the dreaded lame duck situation.
If BJ Raji can play with a motor and a little heart, heโd be fine. Problem was he was just collecting paychecks out there and was a massive bust as a 1st round pick. If he can make a comeback and wants to play football again at a high level, great... but he has to prove that on the field before I give him the benefit of the doubt.
Otherwise, I hope he enjoys weed and retirement.

Somewhere, I had heard Joe Theismann bought Green Bay Packers stock. Maybe let him do it?
Favre bought and gave it to Theismann.
More likely Favre was trying to pass it to someone else and Theismann intercepted it.
I too hope for a DC change this offseason.
Asked #Packers DC Dom Capers how much longer he wants to coach. He said "as long as I enjoy it," he'd like to continue. And, yes, Capers says he still enjoys coaching.
Does not sound like Dom has any attention of bowing out on his own after this season.
To paraphrase Zimmy...."he ain't a going nowhere"
Well, this makes me feel better
Dom Capers said blown coverages can happen real easy. You see it around the league all the time. Said younger players are still seeing things they haven't seen before.

Asked #Packers DC Dom Capers what he uses for a barometer to know when it's time to retire. Here's what he said: "If I ever feel like I canโt come in and give as much as Iโve got, and do the kind of job that you want to do."
