Judging by what happened last year that has now leaked out to the public. I hardly think that is the case here.
**** 'em. I want the Super Bowl this year. Smiler Super Bowl or bust!!!!! LOL, oh the heady days after the Tampa loss. I am back on the TT bandwagon. Still not completely sold on MM. Love his plays, but not his play calling.
The turnaround has been great, except it ensures MM will be back next year. More penalties, and questionable play calling to come in 2010. Not to mention the annual slow start to the run game. I love waiting half the season before seeing it become somewhat effective. Thompson rocks. McCarthy, not so much.
McCarthy and Thompson both deserve some kudos for what has turned into a good year after a shaky start.

Both still have some proving to do in some areas in terms of building this back into a championship franchise. But I think this team is almost back to where it was in 2007, really the one area that hasn't played to the 2007 level is special teams.

Fix the broken special teams, make some minor tweaks on offense and defense and McCarthy and Thompson may have streets named after them someday. I never thought I would be saying that after that Tampa loss, but this team isn't far away at all from being something special.

Of course all it would take to change the fortunes of the team real quickly would be for Clifton and Tauscher to be hurt again.... The job this off-season will be to make sure we are ready for life after Cliffy and Tausch. They thought they were ready this year, and were caught with their pants down....

I miss this insight. Frowner

so, you already know the line won't be adressed next year, young players won't mature, or who will be injured.

well then

Since MM came along and tried to fix what wasn't broken by implementing the ZBS, this team's running game has struggled thru much of the first 8 games every season. I fully expect the line to be addressed and/or players to emerge, judging from the past few seasons, it won't matter.

Actually, I think this year's team is better overall than 2007 as long as Clifton and Tausch stay healthy. 2007 was a mirage. This year's team has more firepower on offense and a considerably better defense. There haven't been any fluke wins or losses this year.

Just sayin'

I do not know it for a fact but I would bet that the Raiders where up there in penalties when they won their trophies.
I'll repent and retract my previous call for heads to roll. Thompson and McCarthy both deserve credit for the team's turnaround.

I wasn't happy with this team through the first eight games, especially after the loss to Tampa Bay. But the team really turned it around. I give credit to McCarthy for not losing the team when times were tough. He successfully rallied the troops and kept them focused. I know these are professional athletes and ideally none of them should give up, especially considering the amount of money they are paid. The fact is that it happens. Look no further than some of the other teams, including the one we played yesterday.

I also give Thompson credit. Obviously, he isn't perfect; I still wish he would have invested a bit more in the O-line. Nevertheless, many of his picks and acquisitions have stepped it up this year...Rodgers, Jennings, Jolly, Matthews, Jones, Finley, Hawk, Williams, Grant, etc. A lot of his players are playing great ball, and a few of them are showing that they are franchise players (especially Rodgers). It's tough not be extremely high on this team's future.

I also love the defensive scheme by Capers. I give Thompson and McCarthy credit for luring him here. I don't know where the pressure packages were the first half of the season, but Capers has called some great games in the second half (with the exception of the Steelers game). You know the plays have always been there. I recall Woodson lamenting the fact that portions of the playbook were not being used during the first half of the season. I think it is obvious that Woodson was right. Once we started bringing the pressure, we started winning. I would love to get another shot at Minnesota with the way our defense is playing right now. Get pressure on #4, and as we all know, he may very well turn the ball over.

I'm proud of this team...players, coaches, and management. We aren't perfect, and I hope that Thompson addresses some of the issues in the offseason, but we are playing damn good ball right now. Once could certainly argue that we are the hottest team in the NFC right now. The sky is the limit.

That assumes Capers will bring it. For some hair pulling reason, he seemed quite content to put the clamps on Peterson while letting the princess stand back there all day and carve them up. Not once, but TWICE. I'm not hoping for a playoff matchup with the Vikes soley because I don't trust Capers to bring the heat on Brent.
For all those posts over the past few pages lamenting what Capers might have done the first and second Vikes games, the defense is much different now. Look at the emergence of D since the TB game. Maybe Capers had not unleashed any fury because overall the players were not ready up to that point. Capers has become more creative the last 7 games and the D has played better during that stretch. Like anything a person is being taught, sometimes it just clicks one day. A for 11+ guys they all needed to have it click... this is in reference to the Jenkins and Woodson comments about expanding the scheme. Maybe the more veteran players were ready but Capers did nto see the same from the younger guys, including players like Hawk, Bigby, and Collins.
I have taken all that into consideration, the hope that the defense just wasn't up to speed yet in the 3-4 for both those games. I could take more comfort in that for the game up here. But in between game 1 and 2, the defense was beginning to show what it could do, enough so that he should have at least tried to unleash them at Lambeau. I don't know, still don't trust him.
Before the game vs. AZ, Wilde talked about the Tampa game and how it looks like that game, even though it was a loss, was a season changer.

Jennings mentioned it today on Homer's show too.

This thread is chock full of gems. It's definitely going into the archive.
