The best coaches are the ones that adapt. There is a fine line between adapting and knee-jerking. And some coaches confuse adapting with knee-jerking.

MM…”we do what we do.”

What concerns me about Dingle Barry is that he seems to have needed people to tell him β€œtime to adapt.” He didn’t realize it on his own.

Sometimes winning masks issues.

It's not a good sign that we're getting leftovers from Detroit; but on the other hand, it's a good sign MLF is asking for a D guy to challenge him and how he thinks offensively, and that he added a coach in the middle of the season rather than waiting until the end. Now, let's see if Pleasant really tells MLF how it is or just wants to keep a job...

Not sure he'd leave the CFL, but if the Packers want an out of the box, unbelievable DC, they will go try to get Hamilton Tiger-Cats HC Orlondo Steinauer.

Dude is an absolute wizard, and will craft the defense to fit the personnel he has to work with. He doesn't have a "system," he believes in, he has principles he believes in and knows how to take the talent he has at his disposal and work with it. I witnessed what he did in one year at Fresno State...it was a miracle.

But he's never been an NFL coach, so I am sure the old boys network wouldn't risk it.

Spoon with a bang-on eval of the situation with Barry...sorry it's subscriber only

But the highlights for non-subscribers...

MLF made a mistake hiring Barry over Evero who has Denvers D ranked #2 currently.

MLF must have the nutsack to make big changes to the defensive staff this off-season, but he can't fire Barry now mid-season...will send the wrong message and will make any future DC leery of coming to work for him.

Firing a DC mid-season is usually reserved for HC about to lose their jobs, and MLF isn't in danger of that.

Basically Spoon says MLF needs to man-up and admit it was a bad hire. 2 years is enough time for Barry to prove he can or can't get the job done.

It actually worked great when he had the talent.  It's difficult to tell if the D is underperforming more because of Barry or because of lack of talent.

wouldn't, by definition, a team underperforming not be the result of lack of talent

(lots of negatives in that sentence, I'm not sure I even understand myself)

We have 7 First Round draft choices on defense. Add to that the fact that, IMHO the following players are individually playing worse than last season; Alexander, Stokes, Savage (or just as bad), Amos, Clark, Campbell, Douglas ..... it speaks to coaching / leadership / motivation.....which all comes back on the coaches. No question that we had more defensive talent on the field than the Titans did Thursday .... but who had the better defense?
