Was he listening?
As much as you listen to your wife.
[ducking]
Having Bijan Robinson split outside with Devondre covering one-on-one is a recipe for disaster and not calling timeout in that situation is reprehensible.
I'm glad MLF is "pissed" but until he does something to resolve the issue.... we'll keep seeing a lot more of the same until the defense proves they can stop it.
MLF needs to look in the mirror if he's unhappy with the defensive performance.
Mr. Barry:
FUCK OFF
Timmy!

Not much left to be said about Barry. Any bitching should be directed at MLF. It was a shit hire to start, it happens, but he's compounded his error by hanging on too long.
This should have been year 1 of implementing a new Defense. Both sides of the ball grow as we move toward a new run to the title. Now, if he has the fortitude to move on next year, we will be in year 1 and suffering growing pains. Thus slowing down the potential run.
They're making the playoffs this year....in spite of Joe Bury
Remember when Joe Barry had covid and Jerry Gray was the DC for a night. That defense held Mahomes and company to minimal pts and yardage. That is the kind of effort needed now with the young offense the Packers have now. But no, MLF wanted to keep Joe for consistency. The same reason the team kept Mike Pettine when MLF was hired. Well if consistently bad is what he was looking for then he got it. I remember hearing that Jerry Gray left because of a difference in philosophy. MLF kept the wrong guy.
Even if the Packers offense takes off and are able to get to the playoffs. We all know how it will end. The defense will get steam rolled again. Thinking anything different will just be a team in denial.
If by chance, the team were to make an in-season change, is there anyone on staff with DC experience that could take over? At this point, I would bet Bisaccia could get more out of them than Barry.

Again....I have to ask ....does MLF exclusively have the ability to hire and fire his coordinators?? I'm not sure he does.
So sick of hiring based on what scheme they have experience with. Establishing a culture, ability to motivate through force of personality, and holding players accountable, trumps scheme every time.
How far we have strayed from Bob Harlan.....

Harlan wasn’t perfect either. I think sometimes we all forget how that Ron Wolf to Mike Sherman transition got absolutely botched.
I guess the good thing was, Harlan left the football decisions to the football guys. The bad news, he relinquished all football decisions to a guy that was nothing more than a TEs coach as recently as 4 years before he got TOTAL control of the Green Bay Packers in every on field facet.
Harlan and Murphy are both great in their own ways, but both have made some critical mistakes as well.

I think Bisaccia is HC-worthy. Not of the Packers, necessarily, but if a good opportunity opened up, he's as good as anyone I can think of.
And, yeah, I wouldn't be afraid to make him a DC.
Guys want to play for him. As opposed to certain other coord

2022.
Preston Smith lines up across from Justin Jefferson with Jaire Alexander lined up across from a tight end. You think it might make sense to switch it? MLF said no this week - creates too much chaos. I guess it could be a zone defense, and they are disguising it? The Robinson coverage was clearly man-to-man though.
Any defensive coordinator that has Preston Smith standing up trying to pass defend a WR is a moron. Any defensive coordinator that has Jaire Alexander playing 6-8 yards off the WR is an idiot.
Oh, Joe Barry has done both multiple times? Sweet.
The comment about MLF getting pissy rings hollow if he continues to stick with that stooge.
Well said.

It's a generic adage, one that's been a staple of Andy Reid, that you put your players in position to make plays. It seems Joe Barry is only willing to do that in the smallest of doses, and that to me is the main reason this defense continues to underperform. I've said elsewhere that 2023 is as much a referendum on MLF as it is on Jordan Love, and that applies to the defensive issues as well. Barry just is what he is.The idea that we know what to expect after just two games is pretty deflating, considering the level of tallant and the upside of a pretty decent bunch of first and second year players. MLF has proven he can scheme with the best. There are flashes of what his offense can be. But his coaching in-game is already suspect after two weeks, and his decision to retain his DC has already cost this team a win. I'm all for having the patience for a head coach to learn from mistakes, and it's a big challenge to incorporate a new starter at qb, but most of the signs so far point to coaching being the bigger issue for the struggles this team has had.
@H5 posted:This is a very small clip of the response he had to, I believe Jason Wilde. Barry also said we can't figure out what works by week 10. To me he sounds like he knows he is coaching to keep his job and there will be no excuses.
I think Barry knows what to do, but has trouble pulling the trigger when needed.
Someone needs to make him a sandwich so he's primed and ready.
How about week 3, Joe?

I agree regarding Jerry Gray. I was shocked they let him go. I really liked the defense he ran when he was forced into it for a game last year I think it was against the Chefs? I remember commenting on how that's what a defense should look like. Did he get a DC gig? It would be nice to have him to go to when Barry gets canned. I don't think Satch would be a good DC, but he's a good coach.
Does anyone else wonder based upon the thread title, why Joe Barry steals shoes?
When speaking to reporters after the game about how to overcome and bounce back from a tough loss, and how the rookies on the team will handle it, Gary said:
“The message for the young guys is to watch how the vets work and watch how they attack this week. They gonna find out.”

Jerry Gray is the Falcons Assistant head coach/defense.
Hey hey, Ho Ho, Joe Barry’s gotta go.
Jim Leonhard needs a DC job still.
Silverstein said the defensive debacle Sunday was on the players, not Joe Barry. Link (paywall)
It was on Jaire Alexander, who had one of the worst games of his career, muffing an interception, dropping coverage on a flea-flicker, giving up a touchdown to Drake London and missing two tackles.
It was on Preston Smith, Rashan Gary, Kingsley Enagbare, Quay Walker and De’Vondre Campbell, who somehow forgot their job was to hold the edge and force Falcons running back Bijan Robinson from getting around the corner.
It was on every veteran on defense who failed to call timeout when they saw the Falcons come out in an unbalanced line on fourth-and-1 at the Atlanta 23 with 2 minutes left in the game. The Packers were aligned in the worst possible way to defend it and someone should have called timeout before Robinson busted off a 7-yard run.
It was on every veteran on defense – and coach Matt LaFleur – for not calling timeout when Campbell was lined up over Robinson in man-to-man coverage four plays earlier, on third-and-3 at the Packers’ 42. Campbell can’t cover Robinson 100 out of 100 times and someone should have done something.
My problem with this line of thinking is the DC is ultimately responsible for the execution on the field.
How did they get in such shitty positions? Really stupid take.
Yardbarker ranked the Defensive signal callers of all 32 teams. Barry ranked 23rd! Higher than I expected.
on the offensive side - MLF ranked 8th.
Why would you call a time out when apparently that is what Barry instructed Campbell to do?
I'm referring to MLF calling a timeout or is MLF only paying attention to the game during offensive play sets?
GIVE ME BACK MY SOLE!!!
