The expectations should be low for Jordan Love. Look at Favre and Rodgers their first 20 games or so. They had their moments, but they also took some lumps.
Holmgren almost benched Favre in 1994. Rodgers got sacked 50 times in year 2.

Except the goal while he was injured was still to win as many games as possible and get into the playoffs. And this was almost accomplished. Love doesn’t necessarily win any/all of the needed games to get them into playoff contention going into week 17.
In hindsight, since they missed the playoffs, sure. AR could’ve sat a few games. Not realistic at the time IMO.
about AR not attending OTAs. it's called a team. camaraderie and knowing even one thing about what makes your fellow teammate tick are what can get you over the line. goals and repetition, shared story. and AR wouldn't have even had to have gone on the field.

So if Rodgers sits out a couple games and they Lose those games with Love playing, Rodgers thumb doesn't heal?
Has nothing to do with whether or not his thumbs would’ve healed. The comment cited was AR could’ve done JL a favor by sitting out. Why would the Packers do that if the were still in the playoff hunt but would need to basically win out. AR gave them the best chance I’d guess is the answer.
Yup, that tells us something.

AR could have also known this was his last year on the team and threw a fit to be kept in as starter even tho he was injured. Him starting also probably upped his trade value, as having an old injured QB riding the pine would have brought up more questions about AR than it would be with him gutting it out.
Either way, water under the fridge at this point.
I think it had to be hard for 12 to see 10 getting better and all but watching the writing go on the wall last season. He was in 10's shoes once and remembers to the word what Murphy and the front office told him when he was ready to play and they moved on from 4.
When Rodgers said he didn't want to be part of a rebuild he had to look at the WR room and know he already was. He's observant enough to look around the facility and see the younger guys were starting to gravitate towards 10 the same way they were to him in his early days. For as much as I give 12 shit for all his eccentricities I have all the respect for how he treated his successor during the process.
I also think it says volumes about 10's character that he earned 12's respect. Not sure how he'll be in game and under fire but there's a lot of people his age that wouldn't have the patience and humbleness that he's displayed on his come up.
As an aside the counter narrative of every pundit ready to eviscerate the Packers because they didn't mortgage the near term future to squeeze every last bit of hope out of 12 and send 10 on his way is damn near the rest of the NFL has a lot to answer for about developing QBs properly if 10 finds his own success in GB. The league chews up and spits out a lot of kids before they ever have a chance to develop into leaders of men. The phenoms are few and far between. Developing a QB with a solid foundation and attributes shouldn't be a 2 season trial by fire.

This is spot on. He may come out on fire and play well right away but typically QBs don't do that and will have a steep learning curve especially when the regular season rolls around.
One thing that the Packers IMO will need to think about is going out and getting a vet QB who has played before in case Love stinks the joint up or gets hurt.
The best way to heighten Love's chance of success is to surround him with great skill position players. The FO has failed on the front over the last couple of years (Aaron Jones was the only the known-quantity star player coming out of camp last year). TT knew that all too well and eventually gave young Rodgers an awesome group of skill players to develop with.

I agree with the point but the reality of the NFL is there aren't a lot of HOF QB's currently under center that have a RD1 draft pick waiting in the wings to take over in year 3 or 4. Teams almost never have that luxury. And when the teams with sketchy starting QB's draft a guy to develop, they often don't have the patience internally or externally to stick with the mediocre vet until the high round draft pick is ready. That draft pick will get shoved out on stage, usually because the mediocre vet gets hurt or is simply ineffective. It's also related to how quickly HC's turnover. A HC on the hot seat isn't looking 3 or 4 years down the road. That's on the GM/owner.
If 10 pans out to be good enough to be GB's QB for the next 10 or even 5 years, they will have had an unprecedented run of stability and excellence at possibly the most volatile position in the game. It's almost unimaginable when you look at the rest of the league over the last (calculator) 30+ years. He turns out to be elite and you're basically talking about winning the lottery - 3 times in a row.
I keep hearing people say "the Packers wouldn't move on from Aaron if Jordan Love wasn't any good!"
Not true.
Right now Gutey's reputation is on the line. He traded up to get him. If 10 isn't a serviceable QB...nevermind a bona fide star, then the narrative will always be he could have taken a WR to help Rodgers and didn't. This is the kind of move that if it fails, you can kiss any future GM jobs goodbye, you end up back as an on-the-road 45 weeks a year scout.
They may truly believe 10 is good enough to lead this team and justify the move up to get him...but they have no idea if it's true...yet. They NEED him to make all their dreams come true.

Heinicke has said he would love to play for the Packers. He's 12-11 as a starter the past two seasons, and his contract in Wash was 2-year $5m. That's pretty much perfect as far as a backup would go. Cheap vet who could win you a couple games if you needed him.
id like Heinicke to come in as a backup. not overly talented but a gamer, tough. i think it would help JLo
I always felt bad for Heinicke in Washington. It seems like they never really gave him a fair shot and went out of their way to want to play someone else.
He won some games for them and I would be pretty happy to have him on the roster.
Heineke is a fine back up, tough and a gamer as you noted. And he says he'd love to come to GB so that's cool. Wouldn't be too expensive either
But its unlikely he has much to offer Love. MLF/Rodgers/Clements are light years ahead of anything he can offer to Jordan. MLF coached Matt Ryan and Rodgers to MVP awards, so there's QB whisperers in GB already
Heineke doesn't know the offense at all and he hasn't been tutored by any offensive guru's. He's a mid journeyman with limited experience and no exposure to top- end offensive minds.( minny-Hou-Car-Wash)
If you want a mentor QB , gotta look elsewhere. Full list is below

Heinicke has a bit of Favre in him. Lots of INTs, but also a gutty player that also just had the will to win. He was easy to root for.
The question is if he'd be ok with not competing for the starting role. If he could be resigned to the fact that he's primarily the backup, I think he could be good in that role.

The same can be said for Robert Saleh. If the Jets do get Rodgers and is not in at least the AFC Championship game with that defense and Rodgers he will be back to a DC somewhere. And not in 2 years, but next year. Maybe he can come to Green Bay as part of compensation in a trade.

I was thinking they needed a vet to help mentor Love....someone like Case Keenum (he's really funny, by the way), Matt Ryan or Nick Foles, if one of them is dumped by Indy, or even the Red Rifle, Andy Dalton. Can't be worse than Seneca Wallace, Brett Hundley or Scott Tolzien, all of whom played during my first two visits to Lambeau!

I'd stay away from there if I were you. Kinda like when I was a big Celtics fan and traveled to Boston to see Bird in the Garden. He missed the game because he hurt his back earlier in the day.

Rodgers broke his collarbone the game before my first two games at Lambeau. Already had tickets, hotels, airfare so I couldn't change plans. To add insult to injury, Seneca Wallace hurt his groin the first series and Scott Tolzien played the rest of the game, right after being elevated from practice squad. Second game, Hundley just sucked at everything but chewing gum.

I remember that night well. I had my left shoulder operated on that morning. Sitting in a chair watching Rodgers get the same shoulder busted. Kinda ironic.
Shea McClellan really got around in those days.
When the Braves' popularity soared in the 1990's, Mrs. Timmy wanted to take her folks to a game. They had never been to one, everybody had Braves fever, etc.
So off we go... and it was a clusterf**k from beginning to end!
The seats she had bought were shaded that day, and although it was warm, the wind made it chilly out of the sun.
The Braves had already clinched their division, so ALL of the starters... didn't. Basically, it was similar to going to a pre-season game.
Then there was a young, drunk asshole a couple of rows behind us that thought it was funny to throw peanuts and popcorn at a baby in a carrier in the row immediately in front of us. Actually laughing and bragging to his friends next to him! Until I turned around and told him if he threw one more thing at it, I was going to slap the shit out of him.
He did get removed by security, but until they got there, the folks were worried about a fight breaking out.
Then on the train ride back to the car, yet more sloppy drunk college-age guys, loudly making complete asses of themselves...
All in all, a day I'd rather forget.
