Re: Rodgers, I thought his contract was reworked so that he can leave after this year. Doesn’t that mean he could leave and sign with another team and we would get nothing in return? Obviously he can retire if he wishes to, but it would be devastating to lose Rodgers and get nothing in return PLUS being in salary cap hell.

Nope. It was reworked so he could leave after the 2022 season (in the spring of 2023). The new clause says his 2023 contract voids 7 days before the start of the 2023 league year.

FWIW, Matt Schneidman from The Athletic and Bill Huber said in their podcast that they both believe Rodgers & Adams are headed and that either Hackett or Getsy will be named the Broncos' head coach.

If that happens Rodgers will never play in Lambeau again even as an opponent. Broncos play Green Bay in Denver in 2023.

The rumor is that Hackett will be hired as the head coach and Getsy will also move there as the offensive coordinator.

If this does all happen, it was in the works for a while. We'll see.

Been following the Packers for close to 60 yrs. Really tired of this team playing like ASS when it really counts. If they lost 30-28 on a last 2nd FG I could stand it. But 10 points at home in the cold with rest and all these guys back? Come on!

I almost think "all those guys back " may have hurt more than helped. The team was playing really well with what they put out there second half of season.  Between the bye and so many guys getting first real game snaps in months, they were out of sync. At the very least I would have kept Nijmam at LT and used Turner at his normal RT position. Reminded me of the team that was not ready to play in season opener.

Cap situation will force a rebuild and AR said he wants no part of that. Pretty clear to me where this one is headed and the organization needs to maximize the compensation.

Technically they could bring it back one more year if they mortgage the future one more time - restructure Rodgers,  resign Alexander to a backloaded deal, cut or restructure Z Smith and P Smith, and restructure about 4 more deals and they'll have the cap room to franchise Adams and have about $10m in cap room.

EDIT: Actually, they're losing a lot of guys in free agency - Campbell, Tonyan, Douglas, Lazard and MVS were all starters.  ESB, King, Patrick, Lancaster, Sullivan and Kelly all played significant snaps.  So while they "could" bring it back for another shot in 2022, they're going to be missing some important pieces from 2021 that I don't think they can replace with their current cap situation.  It's just time.

Agree with this.  I thought having those guys back would be great, but I think it sort of messed with the chemistry of the team.  I think the last run by Deebo to clinch it was the example for me.  Z looked slow and uncoordinated trying to get to Deebo and couldn't make the play while Jaire couldn't make the tackle because he wasn't ready yet and was afraid to use his injured shoulder.  That one play made me rethink bringing those guys all back for a critical playoff game and despite Z's great sack early in the game, there were probably other plays like that.  That said, the D did play really well.

I think the only returning player that hurt them was Turner.

They used Jaire and Z correctly.    They came in for passing downs only.  Z played well, J, not so much.

Turner got beat all day long.   That should have been the guy who had performed well there the past 8 or so weeks, Yosh.     Disclaimer, I've never thought highly of Turner.  Just a guy, average at best.

Yeah, blow it up.

There is no realistic scenario of bringing back Adams, Jaire and Rodgers and being able to fit them under the cap unless Rodgers is willing to play for about 25M at most.

That’s also taking into account they release Z, Preston, Cobb, Lowry, Crosby, Amos and not resigning basically any of their WRs or Tonyan or Douglas or Campbell.

This team cannot win with all of those departures.   They’ve already proven they can’t advance in the playoffs even with all of them.

Here is the receiving "talent" I believe Gute has acquired since he assumed his GM duties four years ago (let me know who I've missed):

J'Mon Moore (round 4 of 2018 draft)

MVS (round 5 of 2018 draft)

ESB (round 6 of 2018 draft)

Marcedes Lewis (FA 2018)

Allen Lazard (UDFA 2018)

Jace Sternberger (round 3 of 2019 draft)

Josiah Degaura (round 3 of 2020 draft)

Devin Funchess (FA 2020)

Dominique Dave (UDFA 2020)

Amari Rodgers (round 3 of 2021 draft)

Tyler Davis (UDFA 2021)

As we all know, Davante Adams is a free agent and unlikely to return. Tonyan, who will be coming off of an ACL, is also a free agent as are MVS and ESB. Lazard is a restricted rights free agent. Cobb almost certainly has to be a cap caualty.

I have no idea if Jordan Love can play QB in the NFL.

I do know that the WR/TE "talent" on the Packers' roster looks is currently incredibly lacking heading into 2022 (with the entire offseason to go obviously).

I also know Gutey's track record of acquiring WRs and TEs and it is well not very good.

Even assuming Lazard returns in 2022, if Jordan Love is going to take over in 2022, GB probably needs to add 3 legitimate pass catching targets (a TE and 2 WRs) to give the guy a fair chance to succeed.

@Goalline posted:

Jaire. At his best he is a better corner than Gary is as a pass rusher. They should keep both.

Agree they need both. I tend to believe that better DL pressure can cover for less than ideal CB talent.

But, I think you're right that Jaire is better at his position.

And honestly, if you throw Jenkins in to that mix as all three are playing out the last year of deals next year I'm hard pressed to not say Jenkins is even higher priority...

My plan:

1) Trade Rodgers and Adams to Denver for 3 firsts, 2 seconds, 2 thirds, and 2 of their young players from 2020 and 2021 drafts not named Jeudy (overrated) or Surtain (Denver won't give him up).  I think this is reasonable.  This frees up $20m in cap space.

2) Release the Smith Bros, Cobb, Lowry, and Crosby.  That frees up ~$42m in cap space.

3) Resign Tonyan, Douglas, Alexander and Campbell to long-term deals (not too backloaded).  That blows through the cap space they created, so limited ability in free agency with like $55m in dead cap hit in 2022.  Take it all next year, don't spread it to 2023.

4) With 2 picks in the first and second rounds (Denver is top 10 in each round), draft an OL, a DL, a pass rusher, and a pass catcher.

5) Enter 2022 training camp with 2 purposes - get your cap in good shape for 2023, and see if Love is the future.  Love gets every snap outside of injury, doesn't matter how bad he is.  If Love's the future, great, you're likely picking in the teens and Denver's pick is in the 20's.  Continue to build OL, DL, secondary, and pass catchers.

If Love is not the future, you're likely picking in the top 10 and have extra first/second/third round picks in 2023 and 2024 to move into the top 5 for a QB.  If you don't like the QBs in 2023, move back and accumulate picks in 2024 to then draft a top QB in 2024 (either by sucking or using draft capital to trade up).

At this point, it becomes all about scouting and player development - Gute and MLF get their time to shine.  The next decade will depend on these two.

Been a great 30 year run but time to move on.  Time to embrace the suck!

I have no idea why people think the Packers would get this kind of haul.

Jenkins is even higher priority because we still don't know what Bakh will look like in September.  It's been over a year and they couldn't trust his knee for a playoff game after 2 weeks rest following his first action.  Some guys don't fully come back from knees.

Did anyone think Detroit would get 2 firsts and a third and Goff for Stafford?   I sure didn’t think he was worth that.

Goff isn’t a legit QB by any stretch but he’s a borderline starter.

Denver doesn’t have any QB assets worth a shit to send back in return.  But they do have picks and other non QB players.

Rodgers instantly makes Denver a contender and they have enough cap space to extend his deal without gutting the roster.   If the Packers flipped Adams to the Broncos it looks even more appealing for both sides.  Plus, if Rodgers has say in the HC hire, what’s not for him to like?

The simple fact is Rodgers won’t be back in GB.   Not unless he’s willing to take a huge pay cut.   The maneuvering that would be necessary to make it work all but guarantees they are cutting or not extending a bunch of key players.  He doesn’t want to be part of a rebuild.   Well, that’s what it would be if he returns at 45M.
