He has the same total playoff wins as Kirk Cousins.  He's gotten as far into the playoffs as Dak has.  In year one.

If you want a franchise QB you need to pay them because there is no alternative.  Most of the 1st round QB's flame out, and if they do they can set back a franchise for a decade.  The bigger risk is not signing a guy who has actually showed he can do it, even for a short amount of time.

The Packers signed Rodgers to a 5 year extension 2 months into his first season starting when the Packers were 4-3.  He was the 4th highest paid QB at that time.  Was this also a huge risk by the Packers?  Obviously in hindsight no, but all of this could have been said about Rodgers as well, perhaps more so since the team went on to lose 7 of the next 8 games after Rodgers signed that extension.

But it all worked out in the end.  Either way, Love is getting paid regardless.

Err, Gutey. Heโ€™s not getting any cheaper.

These deals take a long time to put together because there are so many different parameters to fit into the Packers preferred structure

Both sides know the price is going up while they are in process. So its not like any of these latest deals were a surprise or materially affected negotiations.
$3-5M extra per year on a $275M deal = a rounding error

Fans are surprised at what Goff and Trevor got -  but Gute, Ball and Mulaghetta are not.

Its their job afterall...

Here's the highlights of the recent Trevor deal, I posted it just to show how many line items there are in the summary and some of the parameters that are negotiated to get these deals done. There's a lot of moving parts

1. Signing bonus: $37.5 million.

2. 2024 base salary: $1.5 million, fully guaranteed.

3. 2025 option bonus: $35 million, fully guaranteed.

4. 2025 base salary: $2 million, fully guaranteed.

5. 2025 workout bonus: $500,000.

6. 2026 option bonus: $35 million, fully guaranteed.

7. 2026 base salary: $2 million, fully guaranteed.

8. 2026 workout bonus: $500,000.

9. 2027 option bonus: $35 million (see No. 10 below).

10. 2027 base salary: $6 million. Of the $41 million 2027 compensation package, $29 million is guaranteed at signing. Another $12 million is guaranteed for injury at signing. It becomes fully guaranteed in early 2026.

11. 2027 workout bonus: $500,000.

12. 2028 option bonus: $35 million, guaranteed for injury at signing; fully guaranteed in early 2027.

13. 2028 base salary: $11 million, guaranteed for injury at signing; fully guaranteed in early 2027.

14. 2028 workout bonus: $500,000.

15. 2029 base salary: $50 million.

16. 2029 workout bonus: $500,000.

17. 2030 base salary: $53.341 million.

18. 2030 workout bonus: $500,000.

The deal includes $1.5 million in incentives from 2026 through 2030. Lawrence gets $500,000 if he takes at least 60 percent of the snaps and if the Jaguars win the AFC Championship.

He gets $1 million if he takes at least 60 percent of the snaps and the Jaguars win the Super Bowl. Itโ€™s a total of $6 million; to get there, the Jaguars would have to win four straight Super Bowls.

The contract includes a no-trade clause that becomes nullified if Lawrence holds out, if he is suspended by the team, or if he commits a forfeitable breach of the contract.

The good news is that the first three years and most of the fourth are fully guaranteed at signing.

If you don't look at the big total number and average per year this is a pretty good deal for the Jags.  Here's Lawrences cap numbers for the next several years:

2024: $15m
2025: $17m
2026: $24m
2027: $35m

If they wanted to they could cut him in 2028 and it would only cost $7m in dead cap.  They could also cut him in 2027, but it would cost them $44m in dead cap, which we've already seen when the Packers traded Rodgers so there's precedence there.  So if in 3 years he's floundering and they want to go in a diff direction with a rookie they can.

In essence this is a 4 year, $98m contract.  He would def need to be restructured if he makes it to the end of 2028 because his cap number would balloon to $78m if he's still on the team.  Almost all of this contract is back loaded and there's zero dead cap after 2028 for the Jags.

I'm hoping Ball works similar magic for a Love deal.

Time to pass around the hat with another stock sale to pay for Love's new contract?

Packers have a reserve fund that is in excess of $ 500 M to handle these deals
They dipped into it during the COVID times, but have since built it back up per the annual reports. We'll get another update on that fund at July shareholders meeting, but paying the Love deal won't be an issue for the Mighty Green Bay Packers

Pretty certain proceeds from stock sales can only be used for stadium upgrades, and NOT contracts.

There is no better stadium upgrade than having Jordan Love in it.  He fills it with fans, he fills it with joy after throwing a TD passes, and he potentially fills the Packer HOF (which is attached to the stadium) with a few more Lombardi trophies.  He potentially represents huge upgrades to the Packer facilities.  Just don't use the word "contract".  Instead call JL's contract a PFI (potential facility improvement) paid to the "architect" (the guy who made it all possible) as fees for services rendered over a 3 year period.  It won't even count toward the cap.

I like this idea, but it sounds like someone's going to prison.

I think you will see the Love contract heavily front loaded. Take advantage of all the cheap rookie deals now and pay him a lot.  When all those WR come due we will have some money to sign them then.  The average and the total will be the same, Love just gets more in years 1 and 2.

I think we will see a lot of turnover at WR.   After paying Love, they Packers will need to take advantage of their ability to identify WR talent and just perpetually stay young at that position.

Paying a Adams or Jefferson just isn't the best use of your budget.   Jefferson is not worth 10x more than a Doubs to your team while Mahomes certainly is worth 10x more than Dak.   It's about allocating the resources to the most impactful positions.   To me, that is QB, OL, DL, and CB.   Decent WR with a great QB is more productive than great WR with decent QB.
