Murphy and Gutenmeister speak:

“We are very excited to welcome Matt as the next head coach of the Green Bay Packers,” president and chief executive officer Mark Murphy said. “We found a coach with the background and experience that we think will get us back to playing winning football. We’re also excited about the person—he is bright with a great work ethic and a perfect fit for Green Bay and the organization.”

LaFleur, 39, has worked under Mike Shanahan, Gary Kubiak, Kyle Shanahan and Sean McVay and with quarterbacks Matt Schaub, Donovan McNabb, Robert Griffin III, Kirk Cousins, Matt Ryan, Jared Goff, and Marcus Mariota.

“Matt is smart, organized and has a great vision for the path forward for our team,” Packers General Manager Brian Gutekunst said. “His values and personality fit the culture of our organization. He has a tremendous ability to build relationships on multiple levels, which is a very important aspect in leading a football team.”

Russ deals with players contracts. This hire is 90% Murphy, 10% Gutey.

I think Gutenschnizel had more say in this decision then we think.

Why? Because if you think about it, a Matt LaFleur is pretty much what I'd have envisioned Gute hiring had the decision been entirely his own. He's a young, personable, bright coach who also understands how to put together an modern offense and is the closed thing you get to cloning McVay or Kyle Shanahan. LaFleur is also a guy who won't muscle his way into the GM role and make demands about who the Packers should draft or go get in FA. LaFleur appears to be a go-with-the-flow rookie HC who can inspire Rodgers and create very little waves for the GM.

Compare that with what Murphy supposedly wanted with FitzGerald, bringing in McDaniels and Gase who had major baggage, along with retreads like Caldwell and Pagano. Those are big egos and personalities who would have tried to get at least some control in personnel and who Gute would have had to massage ego's and maybe even be a go between Rodgers and them.

That's a headache Gute hardly would have welcomed.

If Gute nails this 2019 draft and FA, and LaFleur gets this team to a 9-7 or 10-6 campaign, it wouldn't shock me if Murphy announces the end of the "triangle" and we go back to the GM running the whole show in 2020.

Glad to hear Jerry Montgomery will probably stay. Was excited when we initially hired him, and his work to date with Daniels, Clark, Lowry, MoWilk, etc....has been impressive.

I think Dean Lowry, if he's willing to put in the effort, will make any coach look like a genius.  Guy is essentially Lawrence Taylor if he puts his mind to it.

Can he get us the good cocaine?

I don't get the need or desire to keep Philbin around. Murphy and Gute are either totally comfortable with the guy they hired to get GB back on track or they're not. Regardless, any decision on a potential role for Philbin needs to be 100% up to LaFleur.

If I had to guess I would think it would be in a role to help/mentor a young coach adjust to being the HC for the first time.  Time will tell what Philbon's role will be but I would think what his role is up to LeFleur.

Any of them better than Zook.

I have no idea the context of this question.

That said, unless the context is barefoot water skiing, everyone is better at everything than Ron Zook.

I posted the list of special team coaches above, forgot to include my comment and a lot of other responses came in between my two posts

Agree.  I'd rather have someone who already is well versed with LeFleur's offensive scheme as well as innovative with it.  Additional benefit is it more in line with replacing the old guard with the new.

Footballoutsiders ranked the Bengals ST as 7th in the NFL in 2018 (Packers were 28th btw). Doesn't sound like a bad potential hire.

Article listing potential assistant hires for LaFleur...including our own Johhny Holland, LaFleurs brother, etc...

As for Speciali teams , I'm pulling for Brant Boyer: The New York Jets had the league’s best special teams in 2018, according to Football Outsiders, and Boyer was the coordinator behind the success. The Jets fired head coach Todd Bowles, and the next head coach may want to bring in their own staff. If he’s available, LaFleur would have a connection to him through Jeremy Bates, who served as the Jets offensive coordinator this season.
